It Is What It Is

As a nation, we are now spending well in excess of half a trillion on defense,  conservatively.  It's a major contributor to the fact that we are 10 trillion dollars in debt.  Our global military and economic structure, are undeniably IMPERIAL.  Our foreign occupations are in direct conflict with the very principles of our Constitution.  They use "defending american interest" and "combatting our shared terrror problem" as cause to, in a very real sense, police the world.  What happened to the concept of national sovereinty?  We shouldn't have so much "national interest" in every one else's political and economic affairs, other than on an embassy and intelligence gathering level.  Our global military should be cut almost completely, with perhaps the exception of missile batteries, and our naval fleet.  Our carriers and subs can get anywhere they need to be in an adaquate amount of time.  We have adaquate missile defense.  Bring our troops home and defend OUR nation.   We should maintain our weaponry, and continue development, and maintain our elite fighting units, the national guards, coast guard and the marines, but we do not need a large standing army.  If it comes to a War, the government should call on it's men and women, and if necessary issue a draft.  The wreckless spending to protect corporate american interest, at the expense of our people is unjustifiable.....except to those who will agree to anything said to fight terrorism and see WTC footage with Toby Keith background music.

I have 2 main problems with your statement

1. why should we institute a "draft" when brave men and women are volunteering in DROVES (either through enlistment or subsequent re enlistment) to fight under our flag - DUH

2. Perhaps if you were on the phone with your fiance when he got blown to bits, you would feel differently

- perhaps if you had to identify your friends by errant recovered body parts you would feel differently

- perhaps if you spent time in a city which smelled of burned bodies and had to wipe "dust" off of your shoes comprised of what was probably incinerated body parts.. you would feel differently

- perhaps if you had spent any appreciable time in "the city" after the attacks and witnessed, smelled, felt the utter and complete devistation, horror and destruction... you would feel differently

- perhaps if 6 months in the city following the attacks of September 11th left you , over 6 years later suffering from panic and anxiety attacks triggered by certain smells or sounds.. you would feel differently

President Clinton also thought that we didn't need a large standing army, or an intricate intelligence community etc. etc. ... and his errant irresponsibility left us open to the attacks of Sept 11th.. That is a fact verifiable through any medium

I don't need toby keith (whoever that is) music or to watch repeated videos of the attacks of Sept 11th (in fact, I can't watch any footage from the event), all I have to do is close my eyes to remember Jordan's last words and the sounds of a building coming down and a lot of people dying fo

I guess the price you put on national security is none. You must love Billary!

You may live to resent your idiotic statement.

It's a tough call. Our forefathers knew that a standing army, in the context of the time, was a serious threat to national security.

After fighting the soldiers of mother England they knew firsthand of the brutality of seasoned troops used to fighting and killing on command. They knew that a standing army could and would attack it's own country men.

The right to bear arms was intended to ensure that every citizen was a potential soldier invincible against any enemy whether from within or without.

As long as America has this huge advantage in arms, and citizen soldiers alike, no country dares to invade her and no tyrant dares to oppress her.

Our citizens are losing this desire to live unoppressed. Many are accepting the loss of their right to be free. You had better be sure you know what you are asking for when you support a large military and loss of personal rights. To exist in fear is not living and to live like submissive children is not freedom.

No man has the right to take your weapon without a fight, thus says the constitution of the United States of America.

LOL ! Isn't it funny how folks will make a statement without backing it up and then run like a pansie when confronted with facts to dispute their statements... Liberals are such fun ...

So sorry! I had something better to do this weekend than blog. But no, I'm not a pansy. I know enlistment is up. My point is, we don't need to pay to keep all of these full time soldiers. Our current military engagements have nothing to do with 9/11, other than the bullsh. intelligence they used to get us in there. If it were my fiance in the tower, I'd be wondering why our captain america president isn't going after the heart of radical islam and the financiers of Al Qaeda - Saudi Arabia. You prove the point that terror reigns....go yank your own chain.

I would want to know why the planes were allowed to go off path. I thought we had plans for situations like that.

Haven't there been several pre-911 movies that showed military planes having to decide whether to shoot down a hostile commercial airliner?

Was it really so hard to imagine someone using a jet to hit a building?

Yeah, unfortunately all we can do is speculate. In terms of collateral damage, though, I don't think 6,000 lives is a price the administration wouldn't pay, knowing fully what it could accomplish in the wake of fear.
