Wednesday night was one of the most embarrassing nights of my life!  I took Jordyn out to Ruby Tuesday (I love their salad bar) for dinner. When the waitress brought the check I handed her my debit card. 2 minutes later she brought it back and asked if I had another card because it had been declined. Since I had just made a deposit an hour earlier I knew something was amiss. I called the automated system that told me I had plenty of money to cover the $19.55 bill. I told the waitress to try again. She did....it didn't work.  I checked my wallet and I only had $18 in cash!! I asked if they'd take a check for the balance and the tip (there is money in my account, really), they couldn't.  The manager tells me not to worry, he'd cover of the rest. Then a kind woman sitting across from me said she'd pay the balance! I was touched and humiliated all at the same time.  I told her thank you, but no thanks and ran out the door to head home to grab my other credit card (if I carry them, I WILL spend money).  I went back to Ruby Tuesday and paid ALL of the bill. Unfortunaely the nice lady was gone, so she thinks I'm either broke or a scammer. The manager thanked me profusely and said most people wouldn't have come back. Later that night after calling the bank and holding for about 20 minutes....I found out their computer systems were offline! They said the problem should be fixed by the morning. I'm going shopping today....those computers better not embarrass me again!!

So, am I the only one this has ever happened to?

I am so sorry this happened to you.
I have never had a debit or credit card. I know how bad I would get if I had either one. They still keep sending me several applications a month. This has been going on for so many years, you would think they would look at their mailing list and notice I've never applied and quit wasting their paper on me.

Sorry, Trei! That happened to me once and it was a total nightmare and very embarassing. The awful part is, what goes through my mind is that the people are being nice to you because they think you're broke and don't have money to eat, so they offer to pay because they feel sorry for you, not that they think there's any bank error, which makes it all the more frustrating!
Maybe carry a hundred stashed in your purse or something for next time.

Yepper, only I received a new card and did not know that the old one was no longer good. It was Christmas and I had a buggy full of gift at K-Mart. I had to pull the cart off to one side and run home for another card. Got back to the store and the buggy was gone. They put all my shopping back on the shelves. After that I could not do any more shopping, I was spent, physically and mentally.

Trei,

I think you need a raise. A tv celebrity shouldn't be worrying about a $20. That's for brokester jokesters like me lol.

You are lucky, they must have recognized you. Anyone else might have been arrested lol.

Trei here is the same advise I give my girls. Put a 20.00 bill in an envelope and tape it to the inside of your trunk. If your ever stuck it could be your way out and you don't have to worry about someone stealing it if they break in to your car. Just remember if you do use it...replace it ASAP!

Are you serious? The bank actually admitted they made a mistake or something was their fault? WOW!!! Sorry to hear you had a problem. I thought it was a conspiracy against me. lol

I have not only had that occur (a slightly different reason from the bank), but I also was humiliated when I went to pick up my car after having repairs done to it. I had deposited the $ from the insurance company the day before, but the card was "declined". After frantically calling customer service, they told me that if I wanted to spend that amount of $ I had to write out a check. The card's security protocal would not release any $ over $600. Who the heck writes checks anymore?

I haven't had that happen. But I did go into Chili's one day for lunch with my youngest son (who is 14) and when I went to pay the bill I didn't have as much cash as I thought I had. I told my son to stay there, and went to the ATM in the plaza and took out enough cash to pay the bill. Taught me to check to see exactly how much money I had before going in for lunch! :)

Tarie had some good advice there, I don't have a trunk anymore I drive a truck, I keep my emergency fund in the ashtray now! :)

I am the very proud mother of a daughter named Jordyn. She is the smartest, sweetest, funniest kid I've ever met (I guess I may be a little biased). We have three cats, Jazmyn, Jakob and Joshua. Jake is my favorite, he's a cat that act's like a dog! Seriously, he greets me at the door, fetches toys, and chews on my shoes!! Thanks for joining the my fox orlando community and I invite you to join my blog and speak your mind.
