I am SO sick to death of this.

I go to work, to work.  As a programmer, I work in an industry that is desperate for people so, if you can program, you're pretty sure to get a job.

I have no problem with this.  We are a nation of immigrants.  My grandparents would have LOVED to have been able to take a class, apply themselves and get a job, and I laud anyone who does.

However, it is utterly obnoxious when you sit there speaking Spanish or Hindi in a room full of English speakers, clearly because you don't want other people to be included in your conversation.

Especially when it turns into a loud conversation, and ESPECIALLY if you're going to play the race card the moment anyone comments on it.

What REALLY gets me angry is when you speak to someone about a work-related issue, and they can't understand you because their English isn't good enough, however they're making no effort to improve it.  Why should they?  As the Salvation Army found out, if you let them go for that, you better have a good lawyer.

You come here, you work here, you better be willing to contribute.  You can't do that if you can't understand the people around you, and they can't do that if they can't understand you.  Whether it seems 'fair' or not, English is the language of the land.

I think pretty much most people in this country feel like you do. The problem is the Dems who dont want to hurt the poor little hispanics feelings. We are taking away the rights of their people by not allowing them to speak their language....HORSE POOP!

If we would take business licences away from the traitors who hire them over American workers that would be half the problem solved. Then we need to enforce the Laws that are on the books. Especially the one that says to become a citizen of this Great Country you MUST BE ABLE TO, read, write and SPEAK CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH...enforce the laws. Then we could empty all illegals out of our prisons. That would solve the over-crowding problem there. Send them back to their country of origin, just like their country did to us.

This is irritating and there is no reason for them not to learn ENGLISH. They can go to these technical centers and take ESOL classes for free!! I can't take a SPANISH class for free and I am an English speaking AMERICAN. They don't want too learn English because our government caters to them. Call ANY one of the government services. Quite a few of them now are answering in Spanish, then speaking English. Or 'for Spanish please press 2'. Give me a break! Want to stop a major part of the problem. Bust all of these Landscaping services that are hiring and paying these people under the table! No offense to anyone who owns a Landscaping business that is not practicing this technique.

An English speaking American cannot even go to learn their language because in the Spanish courses you are taught to speak 'proper' Spanish, and that is something most of them cannot do because they speak 'Spanglish'.

Then when you speak to these people, they act like you owe it to them to speak in THEIR native tongue.

I learned to speak Spanish for this very reason. That way when they are speaking I do understand it, and while they are thinking I am the typical 'white chick' that doesn't understand, the first chance I get I let them have it.

Your co-workers. When they start speaking in a different language, you and a friend should get together and start talking jibberish and laugh your butts off. Then spread the word you are speaking in Navajo Indian, or some rare language. It worked for me before I learned Spanish. They sure in the hell didn't like not knowing what me and a friend w

It's funny how different it is when the tables are turned. Needless to say, it put a stop to them coming around us speaking their language.

Sorry for the long post! Have a great one!

This is a subject that stikes a nerve with many of us.

My adopted son is 1/2 hispanic and hispanics everywhere assume he speaks spanish. I love when we go grocery shopping because he is a very outgoing boy and will strike up a conversation with almost anyone. The hispanics think they need to speak spanish to him. He looks at them like they have lost their minds. Then I come in and tell them (IN ENGLSIH) "no, that's okay we already have someone to mow our lawn". Suddenly and magically they speak english and decide to tell me how offended they are. I laugh and walk away. It is pretty fun!

Don't try to blame "the Dems" for this. The GOP had a lock on power for the past seven years and did *NOTHING* about illegal immigration aside from try to push through an amnesty plan to keep the rich folks' cheap labor here -- and they're still trying to do so. As for "MUCKING FEXICANS" and "SO RUDE" -- when did xenophobia become so polite and Christian? If you love English as much as you claim, (1) spell it and use its proper grammar whenever you blog, and (2) volunteer to teach non-English-speakers English.

sensible,

So when they come here legal or not and cannot speak OUR language it is my responsability to teach their lazy butts? NOT! They need to assimilate and get off their lazy butts! While I hate to admit it you are correct it is not the Dems fault. Bush has sat on this one as millions have swamped us and our economy. If not for us paying for the MUCKING FEXICANS every DESERVING American would have health insurance.

I've BEEN over it! When my husband was still a Deputy on the road, on more occasions than he could count, he'd come up on a 2 car wreck in the middle of rural Pierson. All the occupants of one vehicle, usually White folks, would still be sitting there, dazed. The other vehicle would be empty, with a blood trail leading into the woods. Naturally, through the investigation, the Sheriff's Office would knock on the door of the home, where the abandoned wrecked vehicle was registered. The conversation would go something like this, "So, where is, Juan-Valedez-Mendozo-Ferdinand?" The answer? "Me no know, no Know no Enlles"." Standard answer, every time. It makes me crazy! I don't think they should be allowed to become legal until they're proficient, in both written and oral English!
Is that a Haflinger and a Percheron in your pics?

No, Deb - that's an 18 hand Belgian

I got him six months ago - he was going to be put down because he was so spooky. A bad, bad man beat and starved him for a year.

I reclaimed him. Now little kids can ride him.

Like you, I love horses.

He's big on the head hugs.

I spent my first entire month with him just holding him in the pasture to get him familiar with me. For another month I'd be lucky to ride him for five minutes. Those little trips, with all of the rearing and bucking and spontaneous seven-foot leaps in random directions, did the trick tho.

I rode him for 3 1/2 hours last weekend. We had a blast. Nothing like a spirited draft.

If they DON'T speak English, they are screwed talking to me. I REFUSE to speak Spanish to them(even through I can). Every Country I ever lived in, I learn that Language. If I can do it, they can too and if not talk to the wall, because I'm not .....

rotty - I'm there with you

And the Spanish aren't the only ones. Ever work with Indians? They DO speak English, but don't do it SPECIFICALLY to exclude other people.

I was actually going to learn Hindi (I speak 4 languages already) but then it occured to me, "Why?" To reenforce this behavior?

It is REALLY good to see I'm not alone in this

If I didn't know any better I could sware they all come here just to go to Wal Mart or at least work there. I don't even ask for help anymore because I won't understand the response. If I spend too much time in a Wal Mart I come out talking funny (Spanglish).

Just an idea here, let's petition whoever to stop making signs, instructions, and anything else being printed in anything other than ENGLISH. What a waste of time, effort, and money to print everything in two languages instead of the one this country recognizes.

I have some family members and friends who teach ESL classes. They are usually crowded and under funded. Yeah they are free, but they are far more students than their are teachers. You may say it's not your job to teach them english but statistically they have a better chance of getting hit by a lightning on the way home than becoming proficient in a language with out taking a class.

I also find it rude when people being speaking in a second language when I am involved in the conversation. When I'm not I ask people what they are talking about, I guess it's second nature from traveling that if I want to know whats going on I have to include myself. I don't find it irritating or annoying if people are speaking a second language when I'm not involved in the conversation. Of course I'm not paranoid, nor do I delusions of grandeur as to the importance of being proficient in English.

I think you guys under estimate how much people in this country who don't speak English want to learn it but let me tell you, people have told me how hard it was for them to learn English than it was other languages.

As for speaking a second language at school or work, it's their right. If you don't like it so be it but I think most of you already said the majority speak English as well even if poorly. Aren't they trying more than you are? I do think people need to speak English proficiently to receive citizenship unless mitigating factors are involved but I'm not going to insist they speak it if they are more comfortable speaking their native tounge with others who do the same. I mean serio

Oh another interesting fact, Americans are the lowest population of bilingual speakers in the industrial world. Thats even factoring in a 20%+ population of Latinos and another 8% to 12% of other citizens who speak a second language. Most countries go out of their way to push their people to learn a second language, we are the only one that pushes them to learn only English.

In fact, no, it is NOT their right to speak a foreign language in the workplace. The employees from the Salvation Army are suing as the ACLU tries to establish that right through the judicial system

It isn't paranoia or delusions of grandeur, neither am I surprised that you couldn't make your point, so you created a new one and tried to make that.

It IS very rude, and when you ask them to stop it in the workplace, you see the race card played quicker than you'd believe. In this case, the real frustration is that the people involved don't speak English well and need to be practicing it, but don't, putting extra work on those of us who have to explain to them, usually only to get back something other than what we wanted.

Clearly because is an assumption.
Leering eyes and crappy attitudes receive the same on both ends. A happy workplace is efficient and filled with happy employees. To destroy morale because of a "he shouldn't" only instigates conflict. If the job gets done right, who cares how it gets done? It's even nicer when the bit chin is done in another language so I don't have to deal with it...
My way or highway is known at the time of employment. Florida is rite to work.

I have no prob if one wants to speak their native tongue, but in the workplace,,,we all need to be on the same page...for safety reasons if nothing else!
If they can "learn" our monetary system...why not our language? Or our "laws"?
