I have been in the past, and am again, working as a server in a restaurant. And for the most part, it's a fun job which allows me to interact with some really great people who come in to eat. But then there are "nightmare customers" who make my job hell. Try following some simple guidlines just like you would want me to if I was in your place of employment......
1. Tip 20% as a BASE! You may tip more if the service and food were exceptional.
2. Control your kids. Nobody thinks they are being cute when your demon children run around the restaurant.
3. Do NOT snap your fingers, or call "Excuse me waiter." We have names and if you learn to read, our names are on our nametag. How would you like me to yell out "Hey customer!.
4. Show a sense of personal cleanliness.
5. When we ask you to please move, get out of the way, or we'll drop a bowl of hot soup on your head!
6. Consolidate your requests. Don't make your server run back and forth.
7. Realize YOU ARE NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE!!!! We have other tables to take care of too. Just like you, they deserve exceptional service.
8. Don't be cheap. Don't order tap water, and don't order appetizers as entrees. If the food is a bit pricey for your pocket, you may rejoin the rest of the cheap people at the McDonald's in the Super-Walmart.
9. Don't order tap water all around. You are NOT being polite! You are just annoying. If you wanna order a round of drinks, then pay for it. Let people order their own drinks.
10. Don't interrupt your server or continue conversing when he/she gives YOU a tour of the menu! Close your trap, get all that wax out of your ears in that big head, and listen up! If you do, don't have the nerve of asking what we recommend....when WE JUST TOLD YOU!
11. The Golden Rule. You expect your server to be courteous to you. You should reciprocate. Lead by example.
12. What goesaround, comes around. If you treat your server like BLEEP, rest assured you will probably eat it too.
13. If you don't agree with any of the above, don't bother coming in. We don't want your business. We can make plenty of money off the decent customers.
14.Do NOT assume your server is uneducated, or an idiot. Your server may be able to outwit you! Many of us are using this job to pay for college, and there are many servers with graduate degrees.
15.If you have a reservation to dine, please abide by and show up on time.!You are fully responsible for it. If you are not able to be on time or not show up, pick up the phone and let the host/hostess know. Do not expect us to wait for you when the restaurant is closed and you wish to be sat! That is absolutely rude!
16.If you made a reservation, please show up on time and make sure that everyone on the party is present! Do not sit down and most of the party is not there...you are holding the server's business and getting the server to lose money!
17.If you order food, read the menu! If you order thinking from your butt, and when we bring the food to you, dont you complain that there is onions on your salad or what there is...that's why you have eyes to see and mouth to speak!
18.Do not shake your empty glass to get a refill. We are not dogs responding to the sound of the ice getting shaked. We are not dumb and we will certainly get you a fresh drink!
A few more issues.... Another very annoying issue is customers who are busy chatting on their cell phone to no one important about nothing important and expect the server to come take their order, offer desert, etc. You are NOT that important, if you want service, GET OFF THE PHONE! I promise you if you come to my place of work, and I'm you server, I will NOT speak to you or serve you while you're on your phone to look important. Also, especially to those of you antique customers who complain that the restaurant is "cold" if the temp falls below 90 degrees, that's something you should plan ahead for. You are not the only person in the place, and the others have a right to be comfortable too, INCLUDING the employees. Do you want me driping sweat in your scrambled eggs? We work hard and fast and are constantly on the move, so we get hot. If you are a person who gets cold, bring a sweater! Don't expect others to suffer for your lack of planning. And to those of you who are ones who complain just to get free food, GET A LIFE YOU LOW LIFE MORONS! And if you come in just to complain about the prices, STAY HOME AND EAT! And remember, tips pay our bills, food, support our families, etc. Do you want me to cheat you out of the money you need to support YOUR family? If you don't want to tip, again, STAY HOME!
And if you think our job is so easy and "any moron can be a server" give it a try. It's not near as easy as it looks. It's a job many people can't handle. And as long as you want to eat out, there must be people like me to do this job and put up with people like you, so don't tell me to go get a "real job"
Try treating your server like a human being and we will treat you the same. Treat me like less than a human, and you just may get treated the same way!
