I have been reading the blogs here for quite some time but never, until now, felt compelled to write.

I had the opportunity to pick up my child from elementary school the other day. Upon arriving I looked up at the flag they were flying and was shocked to see it ripped, torn, and tattered.

I watched as two young girls went out and brought in the flag. The end result was one of the girls rolling the flag into a ball and bringing it inside the building.

I am planning on meeting with the principal this week to see if something can be done. If need be I will purchase a new flag for the school if they don't have enough money but there is also a cub scout pack there so I am thinking, shouldn't the cub scouts bring the flag in or at least teach the other kids and adults the proper way of bringing in a flag.

Have any of you seen this also?

I wish we had the patriotism displayed after 9/11 but I guess that is only reserved for after disasters

I got so tired of seeing a torn, faded flag at the Post Office in Enterprise I finally bought a new one, went down there and put it up myself!!!! (It also gave me an excuse to go to the VFW to drop off the torn one).

Patriots take pride in learning the proper way to fold a flag.
If boy scouts no longer are properly instructed, perhaps a call to a local ROTC at a community college will come out in uniform and do a demonstration.
The students always love outside involvement.
It makes them feel special. They are special!
There could even be a "New flag raising ceremony" for the students.
Perhaps the high school band members could add to the ceremony.
I grew up writing essays, "What my Country means to Me," "Patriotism", "Freedom", answering questions like "Do we have an Obligation to Help Other Nations?" These were usually related to current events.
My own students called those essays "Cheesey.
Makes you want to cry.

One thing that always bothered me was that some people feel that if others protested the country's involvement in something, that it meant that the protestors were unpatriotic.
"Agree or Leave"
"My country right or wrong."
I always felt that people should think for themselves then stand behind their convictions.
"My country right, and if it is wrong, I will do my best to bring it around to the right thing" was a better conviction.

Oh, having students chip in for a new flag might be even better than doing it for them. Let them take responsibility and pride in such an accomplishment.
Let them raise money with donations or with a bake sale.
Personal investment gives them ownership.

Just a reminder...when you replace your old, torn, tattered flag, drop it off at any VFW or American Legion Post. Most all take them and PROPERLY dispose of them once or twice a year.

We have a Presidential Candidate that WON'T even salute the flag and calls wearing a flag pin FALSE patriotism..

I salute YOU for your vigilence and your concerns..Most people probably DIDN'T even Notice..

I have to agree with the way PegasusWing thinks it should be handled. Maybe instill patriotism back in the kids if they are all involved in some way

Fact check, Hawkeye: Barack Obama never refused to salute the flag. Some right-wingers tried to stir up controversy when he didn't put his hand over his heart during the singing of the national anthem. But one doesn't put one's hand over one's heart during the singing of the national anthem, for which one stands (as did Obama). One puts one's hand over one's heart for the pledge of allegiance to the flag -- not the national anthem.

At least Obama stood solemnly for the national anthem. He didn't make out during it as did some NASCAR drivers and their wives, girlfriends or groupies, as was televised on Fox coverage of a recent race. Ironic, there being no public right-wing indignation over that show of disrespect.

As for wearing a flag pin on one's lapel, Washington and Lincoln didn't wear one, and I wouldn't disparage their patriotism. It's a recent fad among GOP types. There's plenty wearing them today while they tear the Constitution to shreds and betray America's interests by shipping jobs and overseas while ignoring our needs at home. That's what Obama was referring to when he said that fashion fad was a false show of patriotism.

Well..I guess ALL those other people were just STUPID,, Huh??

Maybe YOU should attend these things and straighten them ALL out..

Leave it to a Liberal to try to turn a PATRIOTIC Gesture into something to be ashamed of..

As for your other camments,,I've seen what you've written about the Constitution before and TRUST me,,I don't trust YOU to know the difference between the Constitution and a piece of toilet paper,, hotshot...LMAO..

During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.
Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.

— United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171

THERE you go,,Hotshot..

Tell me again how you're just plain smarter and more patriotic then everybody else..

Maybe you should READ sometime and NOT just follow Wright's Lead..

Problem is you can't TEACH Patriotism, it is something you have to believe in or you will just make excuses for your lack of RESPECT for the country that supports you.

TAllen I have to disagree. Patriotism isnt something you are born with like an instinct. It arises from the teachings of what the American people have accomplished and what they will still accomplish. I think that what has happened wih patriotism is that there is so much bickering and mud slinging going on in Government in the last twenty years that I can remember it has born a mistrust in Government. Wether we like it or not part of patriotism is a belief in your government that they will do what is best for the country. Patriotism also implies that the individual should place the interests of the nation above their personal and group interests.

Often official patriotism is highly regulated by protocol, with specific methods for handling flags, or specific pledges and displays of allegiance.

Patriotism relies heavily on symbolic acts, such as displaying the flag, singing the national anthem, participating in a mass rally, placing a patriotic bumper sticker on one's vehicle, or any other way of publicly proclaiming allegiance to the United States.

They've taken God out of the schools and the Pledge of Alegiance, I guess they will be removing the flags soon also. This way no one will have to be assigned the task of taking it down or putting it up anymore. Where the hell is this country going?
I don't know about anyone of you out there, but I am damned proud to be an AMERICAN (who speaks only English)

Political correctness has been in conflict with Patriotism for some time and in public school takes a priority over Patriotism , our public schools are teaching our youth that taking pride in this country is wrong . It is a very insidious but affective tool for lowering our place in the world by placing a greater importance on “cultural diversity” and teaching that taking pride in this county (Patriotism) may offend some one els (enemy's of this country LOL) , schools have effectively driven our youth far from the principals that have sustained this nation for the past 200 years and closer to the ideas that a “Globalist government” is the only right thing to do.
Schools not taking care of the flag of this nation is just one of the symptoms of how sick our nation really is.

Hey Liberal boy , are any of those NASCAR drivers running for president ? Do you have nay pictures of Obama holding his hand over his heart during the pledge ? Seams to me the quick way to clear up his unpatriotic behavior would be to prove it wrong ...instead of maintaining his smug arrogant statements of how he does not have to prove he does not hate this country...his actions to date do not dispel or disprove any of the accusations !

Please understand ..NO one’s saying that Obama’s breaking any criminal laws..In THIS day and age where it’s been deemed to be free speech to desecrate the flag,, it would certainly be MOST difficult to make that argument…

However,, One NEED not be breaking the Law to show disrespect for one’s OWN country....I’m with the Ride on this one..to a degree..While I steadfastly agree that Patriotism is,, in fact,, a LEARNING process,, I ALSO have to acknowledge that ANTI-Patriotism is LIKEWISE a LEARNING Process..

I ALSO believe that Patriotism entails far more then mere confidence in one’s own government..

Patriotism,, despite the rantings of the left,, the attempts to redefine Patriotism to encompass TREASON,, the attempts to redefine Patriotism as some sort of mental disorder,, the OBVIOUS attempts to denigrate,, impune,, or otherwise cast dispersions on those who FEEL a TRUE sense of Patriotism..Despite ALL that,, Patriotism does NOT necessarilly mean a blind obediance to the Government or a given Political Party.. It is a PRIDE in one’s OWN country,, NOT so much for having been PERFECT in it’s History but for having the STRENGTH to ADDRESS those imperfections and effect CHANGE where change is necessary..But it’s NOT a blind obedience,,nor an attempt to ignore,, those problems of the past.. Indeed,, it is a CONFIDENCE in one’s COUNTRY to ULTIMATELY do the right thing and SOMETIMES,, that can actually be in CONFLICT with one’s OWN Government..

For Instance,, the recent Protest over the Illegal Invasion Bill was,, in MY humble opinion,, an example of Patriotism eve

Hawkeye read my blog
May 11, 2008 | 11:05 AM

even though the bill was Sponsored by the Government..The result was that the Patriots FORCED the Government to DO the right thing,, HENCE,, the confidence in the COUNTRY to do the right thing justifies one’s sense of Patriotism..

Now..Before I go ANY further.. Let ME qualify my stance on ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION lest someone get on here,, as they are ALWAYS wont to do,, and accuse ME of being Anti-Immigrant,, Racist,,etc..

LEGAL Immigration IS,, and has ALWAYS been,, a GREAT thing for this country..ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is JUST that,, ILLEGAL..For those who try to Mix these two issue together to attack ANYONE who insists that the Laws of THIS country be enforced,, I say that THEY would be NO better off if they claimed that a person who makes a LEGAL withdrawal from a Bank is NO different then a BANK ROBBER.. I ALSO find it INTERRESTING to HEAR the Leaders of our country declare OUR Land to be “a nation RULED by Law” on the ONE hand then the SAME people turn around and become EAGER and WILLING accomplices to some 12 to 20 million Lawbreakers on the other..

But here’s the thing.. At the HEIGHT of the Protest,, what did you see going on..There WERE,, in fact,, essentially TWO protests going on..BUT,, You DIDN’T see the opponents of the bill out there burning the flag,, spitting on the flag or otherwise desecrating ANY of the Symbols of this Great Nation.. In Fact,, it was the OTHER side that was doing these things and they’re STILL doing them..

NOW,, according to the Supreme Court,,THEY have THAT right just as Obama has a right to disrespect the Symbols of this country…

This Anti-Patriotism business has been around for Decades..I remember the 60s where it was RAMPANT in the counter- culture movement..MOST of those Rabble Rousers were young,, college oriented,, and spurred on by ACADEMICS to FOSTER discontent and subversion..WELL,,,They’re ALL grown UP now and you’ll find them teaching our Kids,, running for office,, and infiltrating all other aspects of American Society where THAT think THAY can do the MOST damage,,like,, and THIS is especially true,, the MSM and Hollywood....It finds it’s roots in the Socialist Movement that was FAR more prevalent then EVEN Joe McCarthy suspected..
It is Anit-Capatalist,, Anti- Free Enterprise and Anti-American in Nature..
ONE can find it in the WAR on the Family,, the WAR on Christianity,, the WAR on Achievement,, the WAR on Successful Business,, the WAR between the Sexes,, the WAR against Patriotism,, the WAR FOR Gorebull Warming,, the WAR FOR Global Government.. ALL this and MORE are part of an EXTENSIVE Campaign for GLOBAL Socialism..

Every ONE of the things mentioned above are FOUNDATIONS upon which the GREATNESS of THIS country was Predicated..And ALL have been under CONSTANT attack..

The BEST ay to defeat an enemy is to remove ALL reasons for his resolve.. To CASTIGATE his Bellief system,, to remove ALL that he believes in..The SECOND best way to do this is to PRE-EMPT having to DO that by gaining CONTROL over his children,, to get to them BEFORE they can learn the ways of the parents..

Accomplish THIS and you have WON by default..without a SHOT being fired..So it has ALWAYS been that F

okay here's my problem with the whole thing...

Time and time again people stand clear and say I'm PR, I'm Black, I'm Mexican, I'm Russian etc.

Well guess what you came to America cause you wanted a better life... THis IS AMERICA and if you have a green card you are Bloody well a dang American... This is why you came here remember?

So, Next time someone asks you what you are.. the answer should be unanimous: I am American!

If it's any other answer, you should be stripped of your green card and deported!

It's that simple.

Riding ~ "TAllen I have to disagree. Patriotism isnt something you are born with like an instinct".

You are 100% correct, but when I said Patriotism isn't something you can teach I was 100% correct as well. While you can teach the IDEA of Patriotism and the FOUNDATIONS of Patriotism you CAN NOT teach Patriotism.

In order for someone to show their Patriotism they have to believe in their country, their government and ALL its principals. They may possess the knowledge about what Patriotism is but unless they embrase it as well it does little good. If Obama was taught in American Schools then he learned that placing ones hand over ones heart is not only a show of RESPECT for his country it is also a show of Patriotism, so any excuse he may come up with for not doing so is just that an excuse.

We have lost the sense of Patriotism in this country because we no longer show respect for our leaders or military any more than we show respect for one another. We have been invaded by individuals that place "me" before "we" and lable themselves as ???-American. We no longer feel a sense of commonality because we seperate at every opportunity and we reward those that disrespect the laws and principals this very nation was built on. WE are no longer one nation but one nation divided and our melting pot has become a bowl of rice and beans, a plate of fried rice, and a platter of chicken and watermelon Dinner is served...hope you enjoy it!

The middle school a few blocks away took their torn flag down and they haven't put a new one up. It's probably been since last July or August. I think not only does teaching patriotism give a respect for the flag and country, but it teaches kids a general respect for others. Something a lot of kids are lacking now days. Maybe it could be if they respect one thing they'll be more likely to respect others =)

It was my understanding that the photo in question was just a still shot and did not tell the whole story.

If a man has convictions in a country that promises freedom of speech, are those who agree with "the chair" the only patriots?
If the Commander in Chief was extending an illegal war, wouldn’t he be the one breaking the law?
Perhaps, the students who marched on DC to protest the VN war saw protesting the war as a patriotic stand to correct a grevious wrong.
Nixon, as a Quaker, had automatic amnesty, so during WWII in the Navy, had his butt stationed in NY harbor, yet was vocal about not extending amnesty to others and calling names.
Isn’t automatic amnesty for Quakers discriminating, on the basis of religion, illegal?
Because I see patriotism differently, am I not patriotic?
I love this country and want to see it thrive for posterity.
I think that people should protest when our leadership is wrong.
I'd like to march on DC and protest the country's unwillingness to enforce immigration laws and the removal of illegal invaders!

SwanSong, I know if I ever met you, I would like you. You're a True American.

I can remember the days years ago when I was in Elementary School and our cub scout den would do the flag detail. It was ceremonious and solemn. I guess that is where I learned it. Later on, as a School Safety Patrol we had the task of doing the Flag detail. Tradition continued. I can remember that traffic would stop while the flag was being raised or lowered. The few that didnt stop we would flag down at the next crossing and give them stern looks. They would stop after that. If someone disrespected the flag, them were fighting words. Im glad to see there are still others out there that feel like I do.
