SIPEDO and YOU

I have often wondered why Atheists continue to live out their lives?
They do not believe in any kind of superior being, yet they continue to work, eat, have families, etc...

I'm not opposed to Atheists living out their lives, but if there is no God, what's the point?
You life is meaningless anyway, and if you do happen to attain some sort of notoriety in your life time, it will be forgotten anyway as history is written and re-written.

If there is no after-life, why try to do good in this life.
I know many Atheists and Agnostics who live good, clean, moral lives, highly ethical and intelligent.  But why?

Could it be that God is truly real, and Atheist or not, God has written a law on the hearts of everyone.  We know what is good and what is evil.  Regardless of your heritage, everyone knows what is right and what is wrong.

But still, if there is no God, then eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.

"If there is no after-life, why try to do good in this life."

Because our life matters.

We do it for ourselves. We do it for our family, our friends, our community, for the greater good. What's the point? The human race, the world we live in, and the beauty of it all.

Notoriety is nice, and sought after by atheists and occultists alike, but it is not everything. To be a good person, for the sake of life, is not a meaningless goal.

Even if there were a God, why not eat drink and be merry anyway instead of running around with your undies in a bunch worrying about what happens after you die?

It is what one believes that matters not what others want them to believe.
To each their own but dont condem someone for theirs. Just like the religion question, which religion is the best? NONE, they are all the same. All religions believe in God or some form of superior being and go about that belief in their own way.
Good post and good responce northon.

Oh Sipedo...how wonderful may I just say:

Never take someone for granted
Hold every person close to your heart
Because you might wake up one day
And realize that you've lost a diamond
While you were too busy collecting stones.

I think if it were not for my faith, I really don't know where I'd be right now. Every morning when I awake I thank God for this day and give thanks. Then I have also learn the each day is a new beginning though one doesn't realize it at times, and it appears is the same routine on a daily basis but is not..something changes or happens differently so then at night I say another prayer thanking the Lord for having me safe. Great post.

The point is, you don't have to believe in an afterlife to do everything you can, to make this life bearable. God ask us to love one another, yet those who don't beleive in God, would probably want to give the same love. Like respecting each other and living to give each day all our best.

Yes Eric I understand that but for Sipedo to state that my life is worthless because I dont have the same beliefs in some unseen, unheard "God", I find that extremely offensive and I am not easily offended.

I know many Atheists and Agnostics who live good, clean, moral lives, highly ethical and intelligent. But why?

I happen to have heard of MANY bad, dirty, immoral, unethical, supposed "Christians" and because they say "forgive me father for I have sinned" that makes it ok that they raped and molested children for years and will be going on to some "afterlife" where everything is just hunky dory? I think not

What my "heart" tells me is that I should live my life and die as happy as I can be. If there really is an afterlife then I am sure I can get in without ever stepping foot inside a "church" before any hypocritical christian would

Careful, careful... I've known some atheists and agnostics whose integrity and goodwill towards others, practiced without fanfare, put self-proclaimed Christians to shame.

As a christian I have been taught about the afterlife but one has to ask is there really an afterlife or is that something just told to you in church. So dont let it bother you what he said. After all how does he know where he will be going after he dies until that actually happens.

I grew up in Ga. a predominatly southern Baptist state. A guy I went to HS with was one of the biggest partiers in school and he always had some type of alachol in his car. He met a girl and started dating her and supposedly got saved while going to church with her. When he finally got into her pants and got what he wanted he broke up with her and went back to being the drunk partier.

Just goes to show you that some people use religion for their own purpose and to get what they want. Also the biggest joke about some churchs was about the decons and preacher getting drunk on Saturday night and sitting in church on Sunday preaching the evils of drinking.

It didnt "bother" me it offended me, I have NEVER pushed my beliefs on anyone and even if I did I would never tell anyone their lives were "worthless" because they dont have the same beliefs as I. The sad part about his Blog is it shows that he truly believes this. I wonder what makes him think HIS life is worth anything just because he is a self proclaimed "christian" and as a "christian" I find it hard to believe that he would judge others in such a manner. Though this is the "faith" blog his headline is what caught my attention otherwise I would have never even "looked"in here.

Sipeido, you have done it again ... provoking us to think. Shame on you ;-)

Swansong - I think you missed the point of Sipeido's post. It isn't that athiests don't have value because they don't believe in God, but rather, lofty concepts like "greater good" have no place in atheistic and evolutionary thinking. If there is no god then MY pleasure and ability to procreate is the the greatest good. Ramdom selection and chance mutations that brought us to where we are today means that we are without PURPOSE and without VALUE beyond the cost of our chemical comosition. Love, justice, freedom and other things that we hold dear as Americans are outside of the core understanding of evolution. Without god, life is all about and only about sex, food, and survival.

"I have often wondered why Atheists continue to live out their lives?
They do not believe in any kind of superior being, yet they continue to work, eat, have families, etc..."

My friend, What does one religous beliefs or lack there of have to do with the desire to live life? You are grossly mistaken if you think that I as an Atheist need to believe in a "superior being" in order to work, eat, have a family etc. I BELIEVE in ME and I am the one who can and does control my destiny through the choice I make every day. Christians by in large find it difficult to accomplish these same tasks with out having a "back up plan" of sorts, it's call God. Where I rely on my personal strength to find the answer I need in my life, Christians must rely on someone beyond themselves. To me, and this is just my opinion, it seems as if it allows them to excuse their "sins" and lessen their own responsibility. After all everything is so much easier when you can just say, forgive me and continue on your way, rather than learn the lesson and change.

"If there is no after-life, why try to do good in this life.
I know many Atheists and Agnostics who live good, clean, moral lives, highly ethical and intelligent. But why?"

Simple answer because they are basically GOOD people NOT just good christians. Religion does not define this character trait. If it did then many who practice a "holy" life would not be guilty of the 7 deadly sins just as those who practice a life void of religion would not possess the 7 Heavenly Virtues. Not all Atheists or Agnostics don't believe in an after life they

Swan, I never used the word "worthless".
I still maintain, if there is no God, and nothing to look forward too, then indeed, life is "meaningless". So, if you are offended, then that must be what you do, you get offended. You know what they say about people who get offended? They are people who get offended.

Thanks didaskalos, you are so much better with words and apologetics than I am.

Norty, thanks for the compliment. You state some noble purposes, apart from yourself.

Eric and sensible, you bring up some good points. However, I do know where I am going when I leave this body, AND, there are some atheists and agnostics who might appear to put me to shame with their good deeds.

As far as "forcing" my views on others, I don't believe that is what I am doing. I do have a mandate however when it comes to my faith, and that does not include keeping it to myself.

The way I see it, God is having a party, and I don't want anybody to miss out on that party.

I wish I could say more right now, but chew on what I just wrote, and don't put words in my blog that aren't there. Right now I'm watching the Red Wings go into overtime against the Penguins.

"Could it be that God is truly real, and Atheist or not, God has written a law on the hearts of everyone. We know what is good and what is evil. Regardless of your heritage, everyone knows what is right and what is wrong."

We are not born knowing right from wrong, it is a LEARNED set of moral and ethics we each posses. It is LIFE LESSONS handed down in childhood that mold us and teach us good from evil, right from wrong. Just as NO baby born KNOWS what god is. That too is something LEARNED.

Swan, synonyms are words that can be used in place of, but do not always carry the same definition.

Again, don't put words in my blog that are not there. Meaningless and Worthless are two different words with similar, but not identical meanings. Further, the word was not directed at YOU specifically. Don't flatter yourself.

But I'm not going to split hairs on definitions of words. If the word meaningless struck a nerve with you, then great. No apologies here. At least it got you thinking about something. And for that I am grateful.

Ride, I appreciate your comments. I do not agree with them however. I do not believe you call yourself an Atheist and believe in any kind of after life. Agnostic? Maybe, but Atheist, no. If you believe in an afterlife, whether Christian or not, you do not fit into the definition of Atheist, but an Agnostic.

By your assessment of LIFE LESSONS handed down to us from childhood that teach us good from evil, let's open up another can of worms then. If that holds true, then all behavior is learned. You can't have one without the other. Prostitution is learned. Homosexuality is learned. Heterosexuality is learned. Pedophilia is learned. I could go on and on.

I contend that we are faced with choices. Good or Evil. Right or Wrong. We cannot place the blame of what we know or don't know on our upbringing. Atheist, Agnostic, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Gay, Straight, Bi, Pedo, Drunkard are all choices, whether they are learned or not. Even the Cannibal knows deep down that what is right and wrong.

Good morning Sipedo and everyone else. What a wonderful treat it is to have a morning now and then where work doesn't have to be my main focus. lol.

Sipedo, if you would allow I would like to jump into your second can of worms here. :o)

Yes, ALL behaviors are learned responses from the prostitute on the street to the old man sitting in a churce pew praying devoutly.

Riding said that a newborn baby does not know who God is and that is a true statement. When each of us came into this world we were preprogrammed with something call "instincts". Those are vastly differnt from "knowledge" and to try and interchange them is impossible.

We come into this world and survive by "instinct" we grow and flurish as humans because we "learn". Someone who has never had any exposure to any form of "learing" does not know right from wrong, good from evil, UNTIL they use their inborn "instincts" and "learn" from trial and error, but even that is limited because their sense of both right and wrong or good and evil will ALWAYS be based on THEIR knowledge alone. The point I am trying to make is that we have ALL been taught right from wrong, good from evil based on the beliefs of many who share common experiences and by rules we have established in a quest to become "civilized". The member of the headhunting tribe deep in the forest of Brazil is not going to understand it is wrong to kill and consume his enemy any more than you would understand it is right. This same principal applies to religion and a belief in God. Children "learn" God, religion, Belief, and Faith. They are not "

"instinctual". That brings me full circle here back to the original topic to answer the questions you asked.

Atheist's live their lives like everyone else because they value the world and their part in it.

Life is not about notoriety, as christian and atheist alike in the end will all but be forgotten over time.

Atheists may not believe in the after-life a christian does but that is because the Atheist does not need to believe as the christian does and neither is a basis for the ability to live a "good" life.

NO LIFE be it a christian one or an atheist one is ever worthless. It is that thinking that over history has lead the Muslim to kill the Christian, the Christian to kill the Pagan and the Pagan to kill them All. When we start to think of others as worthless we no longer see right and wrong, good and evil no matter what we have learned.

Hi, I'm a musician, I live in a house and I have 3 dogs. I believe in God and Jesus, and am the most imperfect person in the world. The hand I have been dealt is better than most, but not as good as others. I am blessed to be alive, and looking forward to the day when this body will be replaced.
