SIPEDO and YOU

Over the years we have misinterpreted what the word "WORSHIP" means.  In the Bible, worship is associated and equated with sacrifice.  How is that we call our gatherings on the weekend "worship" services.  Are we actually sacrificing anything more than an hour or so of our time?  What we do on Sunday morning in this country is Praise, it is not worship.  That's for us as Americans, and others who are free to practice their religion in their own way in other countries.  If you want to know what "WORSHIP" really is, a glimpse of it can be seen on http://www.persecution.com , the official website of Voice of the Martyrs.

I know, I know, it might seem like I am splitting hairs on this one, but, we need to be clear about what we are talking about.  Now, if you had to hide to praise your god for fear of being imprisoned or even killed, I would call that sacrifice.  I would call that worship.

As far as the music goes, there are some hymns out there being sung that are not biblically based.  In my church where I am the music director, we use a wide range of music from classical to hip hop.  Every song we use has a biblical message, but all are designed to give praise to God.  But worship?  I reserve that for when we are REALLY persecuted for our faith.  Until then, I'll call it praise.

I think a life of worship is possible, and what it means is that you totally surrender your will to the will of God.  That means your life, your finances, your family, your possessions, how much more shall I list.  When you are ready to do that, then you are a worshipper.  Most of us are a long way from attaining that, in the meantime, give praise, the worship will come.

I realize some will take issue with me on this one, that is okay, but when Abraham was with Isaac, he told those with him, stay here, while my son and I go to worship.  Abraham was ready to sacrifice his own son.  It was worship.  God was testing his obedience.  We have it easy in this country.  So, Praise Be To God, and may I present my life as a living Sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God.

It can be. Hebrews 13:15 says, "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name."

The heart of worship can be expressed in may ways. I do see what you are saying though ... in our abundance we often tend to flee, pain, suffering, or sacrifice in our feeble attempts at worship.

You must know the words to these songs,
"Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down,
here I am to say that you're my God, you're all
together lovely, all together worthy, all
together wonderful to me. I'll never know how
much it cost to see my sins upon that Cross..."
Or this one, "...that He would leave his place
on high, and come for sinful man to die, you may count it strange, so once did I, before I
knew My SAVIOR..."

Worship is a lifestyle, rather than what you do or don't do.We offer up our lives as a living sacrifice.

The term "WORSHIP" is a shortended version of the Old English word "WORTHSHIP." Basically it means that we come together to offer our praise to God because He is worthy of that praise and we listen to His Word being taught bewcause we think His Words are worthy of our efforts. Unfortunattely most churches today have removed the focus from the pulpit and praise and put it on the stage and entertainment.

Great songs Deborah.
But is what we do on Sunday really a SACRIFICE of praise?

Yes August, Worship IS a lifestyle.

I know I fall short in that area, I'm working on it though so that everything in my life points to God.

Sip, whether our praise is a true sacrifice or simply lip service depends on who's offering it. In any case, it should be a sacrifice. (Heb 13:15) "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a SACRIFICE OF PRAISE — the fruit of lips that confess his name." What is a sacrifice? It's something that gives its life to the glory of a supreme being like and animal that is sacrificed to a pagan god. We don't offer blood sacrifices anymore, but we are called on to give up our old lives and honor God with our new lives in the form of praise and service. In that sense, we are "living sacrifices" (Rom. 12:1-2) "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as LIVING SACRIFICES, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will."
So, offering yourself as a living sdacrifice to God in everything you do is something every Christian should be doing. Giving up OUR OLD LIFE to the glory of God.

Hi, I'm a musician, I live in a house and I have 3 dogs. I believe in God and Jesus, and am the most imperfect person in the world. The hand I have been dealt is better than most, but not as good as others. I am blessed to be alive, and looking forward to the day when this body will be replaced.
