I  posted recently  on another Blog that the Great Prostitute (WH0RE) of Babylon may be a conglomerate of world religions, possibly with the Catholic Church as the centerpiece.

I had a conversation with my pastor last night, and he gave me another perspective.

Is it possible that the Great WH0RE mentioned in Rev. 17 and 18 is the United States?  Have gone so far downhill that we fit that description?

I haven't bought the idea yet, but it has made me think.
Who buys all the worlds garbage?
Who has more Halls of Fame than any other country?
Who buys more alcohol?  Tobacco? Gasoline?
How fat are we?  How about porn?  Drugs? How about telling the truth?

Here, read those two chapters I've included here, and see if you see any similarity?
Chapter 17
1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, "Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication." 3 So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. 5 And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY,BABYLON THE GREAT,THE MOTHER OF HARLOTSAND OF THE ABOMINATIONSOF THE EARTH.6 I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.7 But the angel said to me, "Why did you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns. 8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 9 Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. 10 There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must continue a short time. 11 And the beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition. 12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful." 15 Then he said to me, "The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire. 17 For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth."

Rev 17:1-18 (NKJV)

Chapter 18

1 After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory. 2 And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury." 4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying, "Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. 5 For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. 6 Render to her just as she rendered to you, and repay her double according to her works; in the cup which she has mixed, mix double for her. 7 In the measure that she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, 'I sit as queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.' 8 Therefore her plagues will come in one day--death and mourning and famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her. 9 "The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her will weep and lament for her, when they see the smoke of her burning, 10 standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.' 11 And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise anymore: 12 merchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble; 13 and cinnamon and incense, fragrant oil and frankincense, wine and oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and bodies and souls of men. 14 The fruit that your soul longed for has gone from you, and all the things which are rich and splendid have gone from you, and you shall find them no more at all. 15 The merchants of these things, who became rich by her, will stand at a distance for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, 16 and saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls! 17 For in one hour such great riches came to nothing.' Every shipmaster, all who travel by ship, sailors, and as many as trade on the sea, stood at a distance 18 and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, 'What is like this great city?' 19 They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate.' 20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God has avenged you on her!" 21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, "Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and shall not be found anymore. 22 The sound of harpists, musicians, flutists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you anymore. No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore, and the sound of a millstone shall not be heard in you anymore. 23 The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were slain on the earth."

While our moral decline as a nation is of great concern, I think there are other factors to consider in identifying the Whore of Babylon. If it is there in the text, it is not clear.

They were refering to Babylon which did exist back then, but I did see parallels.
"No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore."..we have lost all our industry.
"Plagues will come", there is AIDS and resistant strains of everything.
30 years ago I thought that AIDS would bring a New Victoran Morality, but I thought wrong, it is worse.
"All things which were rich and splendid have gone from you."
Well, not all good and splendid things have gone.
I do think that we can take back America.
I am just not sure that we have the leadership.
Then, can we be our own leadership?
The question is: Can we get back the good and splendid things?

Alas! Alas! It was just a bad dream as told by a superstitious primitive who didn't know what else to make of it. Grow up!

Nowhere in the Bible is the continent of North America mentioned. However, we certainly are the epicenter for some of the filthiest, most ostentatious, selfish, wasteful, greedy, nefarious, bunch of human beings in the world.
On the other hand, nowhere on Earth, are there
more Christians on a single continent. This is a good question for Bible Scholars everywhere, and one I'm sure, that will be met with great debate. I'm going to "E" jfore, and ask him to respond, he knows quite a lot about the Bible,
having studied it extensively. Your question is
one that has me shrugging my shoulders, and shaking my head. I just don't know.

When I was younger I too believed that the Catholic church was Babylon, atleast thats what the bible believers around me suggested. But I began to read Rev all over again and started to lean towards America being the "Great Whore"
I found out I wasn't the only one that thought that. There are somany people trying to "take back" America (America this and America that)ETC,but truthfully America is not my home.As a Christian, I am taught to set my affections on things above, and just before Jesus left to return unto the Father he said in John 14:2-3,"In my Father's house are many mansions;if it were not so,I would have told you.I go to prepare a place for you..And if I go and prepare a place for you,I will come again, and receive you unto myself;that where I am,there ye may be also."
I'm not saying that I'm un-patriotic or anything, don't get me wrong. But there alot in America that displeases the Lord.If it wasn't for the remnant of God I believe America would have already been destroyed.

It is clear from Scripture that the Great Prostitute of Revelation represents some sort of worldwide religious system that has prostituted the true religion and most of the world's population is going to fall for it hook. line and sinker. That rules out the United States since the U.S. is not a religious system. Since the Prostitute supports the Anti-Christ (Beast), and since the Anti-Christ is to come out of the remnants of the old Roman Empire (Europe) some have speculated that it will be the Roman Catholic Church which is centered in Rome. They'll point to the fact that the Prostitute sits on seven hills and Rome is built on seven hills, but you can say that of several other cities as well. Obviously Roman Catholics don't like that idea. If this new religion ends up being centered in Rome it's obvious that the current Roman Catholic Church will be corrupted into something unrecognizable. Others speculate that the Prostitute is Islam because Islam contains many elements of Christianity that have been perverted. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world today and it definitely makes war on the saints. Who knows. People have been speculating about this for centuries. Looking at the world today, I think this worldwide religious system will probably be a "religion of convenience." In other words, a "postmodern" "New Age" type of religion that is a mix of everything religious. We can see the trend today toward thinking that all religions are equally valid and equallly true. We can also see the trend to look at religion as a spiritual buffet where you can choose the el

We can also see the trend to look at religion as a spiritual buffet where you can choose the elements you like from all the world's religions and reject the rest. We can also see the trend to oppose any religious system that claims exclusivity, as Christianity does. That allows you to create your own personal religion and reject any religion that claims to be absolute truth. This will unite the entire world under a religion that allows you to believe and do whatever you want. We're already doing it today. But the False Prophet will arrive to organize it into a worldwide religious system of the "Church of Doing Your Own Thing" that will support the Anti-Christ's rise to world dominance. Well, all this makes for an interesting conversation, but I don't really worry about it very much. As a premillennialist I don't believe I'll be here to see it happen anyway.

I'm not really concerned either, but I'm not totally sold on it being a religious system.
"Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. 5 For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities"Could this be referrencing the Rapture?
"'Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.' 11 And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise anymore: 12 merchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble; 13 and cinnamon and incense, fragrant oil and frankincense, wine and oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and bodies and souls of men."It doesn't seem as if it's talking about a religious system, but a actual place.

Our next study of prophetic books will be in October, the book of Daniel.

Sip, I just finished teaching a three month series on Daniel. Daniel is a very interesting figure.

August, it's possible that those verses refer to the Rapture but that does stretch it a bit. I'm more inclined to think that they are a warning to people who are involved in that false religion to get out before it's too late and God's judgement comes. References to Babylon in the New Testament generally refer to the religious system that Babylon represented and the particular verses you quote refers to Babylon's defeat by the Persians as an example of how suddenly God's judgement will come and how complete it is. Babylon was the greatest city of its time. Yet it was defeated in a few hours.

northon: I sincerely hope that after you get out of Middle School you will mature enough to hold an intelligent conversation about something. I've tried on several occasions but so far the only thing you can do well is be rude. But rudeness is not a sign of intelligence. In fact, it’s proof that you cannot carry any intelligent train of thought so you cannot compete in the arena of ideas and have to resort to inane temper tantrums to avoid dealing with things that challenge your world view. I’ve asked you a few simple questions that you still have no answer for. For example, science agrees that if there was ever a time when absolutely nothing existed, then nothing would ever exist. Something cannot spontaneously appear out of nothing. So tell me where all this matter and energy we see came from. The Big Bang doesn’t answer it. To have anything you must start with something that is eternal and self existent. What is it? I’m still waiting for your answer. You mention Evolution. Explain to me why Evolution violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The second law of Thermodynamics is the law of entropy. It says that everything is deteriorating. But Evolution requires thing to go from the simple to the more complex. I’m still waiting for your answer. If we are advancing, then why do humans have 46 chromosomes and a horse has 64? Wouldn’t that make the horse more advanced? I’m still waiting for your answer. Evolution also required the collection and organization of extremely vast amounts of information in the DNA codes of every living creature. The DNA info in an Amoeba would f

The DNA info in an Amoeba would fill a 1,000 volume set of the Encyclopedia Britannica but even then could only operate an Amoeba. Information doesn’t simply appear out of thin air. Where did all that information come from. I’m waiting for your answer. Where is all the fossil evidence proving transitional species. I’m still waiting for you and your science to produce even one. Yet if evolution is true, there should be trillions of them. Until you can answer those questions, don’t bother me.

"science agrees ... blah blah blah... Something cannot spontaneously appear out of nothing. So tell me where all this matter and energy we see came from"

Great question Jsmore and one that science cannot answer today if ever, so I guess, "God did it" will just have to do until we get a real answer, is that right?

Entropy applies to rocks and cars falling apart, not life, and evolution does not say that something must become more complex. Creatures can become simple if that is what works best. Do you think the number of chromosomes are what determine intelligence?

"Where did all that information come from. I’m waiting for your answer"

That information came from adding to earlier information to create something more advanced.

"Where is all the fossil evidence proving transitional species. I’m still waiting for you and your science to produce even one."

What is it you are looking for, an ape wearing Nikes?

"God did it" is not a substitute for learning you quack! Just because you don't have the answer to a question doesn't mean you don't have to find one.

Just because I don't know how a nuke bomb works doesn't mean "God did it" is the right answer, and that is really your only silly argument isn't it, that if the question has yet to be answered then the primitive cave man answer of "God did it" will be your answer.

Unga BUUUUNG!! You not know so me right, huh huh huh!

northton read my blog view my photos

"Yet if evolution is true, there should be trillions of them."

Perhaps, but they wouldn't just be lying around on the ground would they? An animal carcass can dissapear in a very short time, pulled apart by animals, covered with dirt and leaves, etc.

"Until you can answer those questions, don’t bother me."

If you are bothered it's not my fault.

Still "God did it" is hardly an argument worth merit and certainly does not explain anything.

It would be nice to think we could just look in a magic book and find all of life's answers, but that's not the way it works.

Thank "God" your kind is not running the world or we would have nothing more than magic wands and witch doctors at our hospitals, which we would get to by riding horses from our huts.

Northton. You just proved my point. You cannot compete in the arena of ideas. For example. To my question -- where did all that information come from? -- the best you can come up with is "It came from adding information to the information we already have"? That's like saying the water in the glass came from adding water to the water we already have. HUH???You're kidding, right? You actually think that was an intelligent coherent answer? And of the trillions of transitional forms that must exist in the fossil record if Evolution is true, the best answer you have is to say that all of those fossils must have disolved? You don't even question the fact that, of the billions of fossils that didn't dissolve, not even one transitional form has ever been found. NOT EVEN ONE. And there should be TRILLIONS OF THEM. You actually think that's an intelligent answer? Even Darwin admitted that there was no evidence to support his ideas. He just thought the evidence would be discovered later. Well, we're still waiting. Here's what Darwin himself wrote. "Long before having arrived at this part of my work a crowd of difficulties have occurred to the reader. Some of them are so grave that, to this day, I can never reflect on them without being staggered.
Such simple instincts as bees making a beehive could be sufficient to overthrow my whole theory, and to think that the eye could evolve by natural selection seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest possible degree." And remember, Darwin had no idea how complex the human eye really is. And to say that the Second Law of Thermodynamics on
