WASHINGTON - John Edwards says he made a serious error in judgment when he had an affair and is ashamed of his conduct. In a statement, the former Democratic presidential candidate also said he informed his wife about his affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter in 2006 and has asked her forgiveness. Edwards said he is not the father of the woman's daughter and is willing to take a test to determine the 5-month-old baby's paternity. He said the affair lasted for a short time in 2006.Until Friday, Edwards had denied reports in the National Enquirer that he had an affair while his wife, Elizabeth, was battling cancer. He admitted to the affair in an interview with ABC News, then released a statement.

i know i should not be shocked..but i am. you wife had cancer  you ***!

He IS a scum bag. Even John Kerry commented after the election that the guy had a pretty limited concept of reality

Like telling John Kerry that a story about his dead son that "he'd never told anyone before," and Kerry had heard it from him a few months earlier.

Keep in mind, Edwards claims that this affair was over more than a year ago - so precisely what was he doing in the hotel with her last month?

This story is a lot of things, and 'over' isn't one of them

Edwards behavior, immoral as it is, is no different that Newt Gingrich's, who cheated on and divorced his second wife while she was ill with cancer (after cheating on and divorcing the first and refusing to pay alimony or child support -- so much for personal responsibility), or John McCain's, who cheated on and divorced his disabled first wife, going so far as to get a marriage license for the second wife before the divorce from the first was final -- piling bigamy on top of adultery. When will Fox News show its moral indignation over that?

In his righteous campaigning John Edwards said that there are "two Americas". HA! There are also two John Edwards!

You're are absolutely right, MrWizard. This isn't over! This story will continue right into the Democratic National Convention. Now tell me why, as if I don't already know, why the mainstream media didn't jump on this like they jumped on the unfounded story of John McCain. Hello, NY Times--where are you???
Can you say DOUBLE STANDARD!!!

I think McCain are easy allegations as he's got a daughter living in Canada from his first wife. He cheated on his first wife. Once a cheater always a cheater? I think after his term his daughter will seek Canadian citizenship.

McCain's adultery and bigamy isn't an unfounded story. It's documented in court records reported by the Los Angeles Times:

In fact, the way he treated his first wife and married his second earned him a cold shoulder from Ronald and Nancy Reagan for a long, long time.

In short, McCain's telling of the story doesn't add up to the dates in court records and on marriage certificates. He either has a problem with memory or honesty. Neither are good character traits for a president.

Playing the shell game again, Joe? How about the fact that Edwards and other lib dems hide the fact from the media, of Edwards antics so Obama wins Penn...otherwise, most say it would have went to Clinton...upsetting applecart...I guess that little tidbit was an oversight.

And you're citing the LA times? haha

No shell game here, TM6068. And I'm citing court records, inconvenient as legal facts may be for some. With Gingrich, Vetter, Giuliani, McCain, etc., guilty of adultery, bigamy, solicitation of prostitution, refusal to pay alimony and child support (some with regard to sick wives, some on multiple counts), the Republicans are in no position to crow self-righteously over Edwards. And that's just cases of heterosexual misconduct... There's Foley, Craig, Allen, Curtis, Haggard and their public men's room, congressional page or male hustler antics for variety's sake. All in the past year or two, to boot! So no, the GOP is in no position whatsoever to moralize over this. People in glass houses ought not to throw stones -- and you have to take the plank out of your own eye before you can see the speck of sawdust in another's.

What an absolute liberal bias from ole joe here citing only the members of the Right! Meanwhile I guess Kennedy leaving women at the bottom of the lake, Kennedy with his heram, Clinton still owes us 30 million in the cost of independent counsel after finally confessing because Sandy Berger couldn't destroy the blue dress for him like he did everything else!
Lets not talk about Barney Franks who ran a gay brothel with his BF out of their DC appartment, or Studs who actually had gay sex with a page, sensured then re-elected TWICE! The gay affair of a married man running New Jersey, or the Gov of NY who was running with hookers while shutting down others!

Just some of the names off the top of my head here....

Man I have to tell you if you read Joe's comments and then you read Abunai's you have to come to that conclusion that we need to through them all out of office every single corrupt one of them

Lots of married men cheat so why should we expect these clowns in DC to be any different? Fornication crosses party lines and I think it is funny when you partisans argue about who the biggest scumbags are. NEWSFLASH...they all are!!!

What I find really troubling is the quality of women Clinton & Edwards went after. Edwards is a good looking guy and you would think he could have done better.....and Slick Willy with Monica??? Come on!!! You are the leader of the freakin free world and the best you can do is an overweight intern? Looking on the bright side at least these were women unlike the conquest of many of the exposed Repubs who have been "outed" in the past few years.
