There's no doubt that Paulson and Bernanke are in the hot seat and are trying desperately to get at least $750 billion to bail out failing financial institutions.  However, they seem to want a blank check with all kinds of built-in legal protection stipulations for themselves and others.
But why?

Why the insistence on such legal protections and why such few answers about how we got into this mess without it being caught sooner?

Perhaps there is more to the situation than meets the eye.
Sure the mortgage crisis, housing bubble, etc. has contributed, but is there something that isn't being talked about very much?

According to several sources, Federal Prosecutors are investigating at least one major U.S. bank for money laundering and connections to drug money laundering operations in Mexico.  In addition, top executives of several of the financial institutions hoping to receive funds from this bail-out are also being investigated.

Is it possible that organized crime has more of a role in this mess than is being reported?   Why such secrecy over the need for almost a trillion dollar bail-out?  Is there a hidden reason for Bernanke and Paulson to be so frightened about this situation?

Don't we deserve some answers?

LOL! Now exactly how should we translate what you just said:

One way: I can't believe we can't find a single Republican to actually blame this on! Why we can't even scream that its Bush's fault! Without having the GOP to blame and smear we are just at a loss! Even our Majority leader Harry Reid admits to "We really don't know what to do!"

OR!.........

Darn! We were SO CLOSE to sneaking socialism down the throats of America, we pimped out the poor and low income with EVERY entitlement programs we could think of, even having to search out for people to place on food stamps! How did we miss the idea that literally giving them a home, we forgot to tell them they would actually have to pay for it, and THEN we allowed people to try to get rich quick on real estate and it blew up in our faces!

If we call for a full investigation and march all these CEOs up, or ask for independent counsel then too many people will find out what was really going on! We want to wait until the election is over, but it would be too late, and then it will be so bad they will demand investigations and we will loose the majority forever!

Some interesting LINKS:

After sucessful lobbying, U.S. weighs bailout of foreign banks too.

Exclusive: Foreign banks may get help.

$750 billion - soon to be 1 trillion.

They also are not telling you (actually people are.. but it not who people on the left will admit to hearing it from) that Democrats from Carter and Clinton, and their administrations before and after office manipulated the system.

That while Democrats were in the minority, fillabustered or blocked legislation for regulation on Fannie and Freddie, and in 06 once a majority, were killing legislation attempts in committee as chairman of banking and finance, while receiving sweetheart deals themselves, and/or huge contributions.

Also not being told was Joe Biden killing America's opportunity to file for bailout (bankruptsy) with his legislation that also gave his son's lobbiest position and hedge fund operations a boost!

Sen. Dole and McCain, along with many others have been trying to pass legislation as far back as 2003 to present, and getting nothing but a brick wall from Franks, Schumer, Dodd, and other DEMOCRATS!

THIS is why we don't have a call for independent counsel, or investigation into how all these "corrupt" CEOs were able to operate as they did...

If there was not a HUGE liberal/socialist trail here leading to Democrats the coverage here would be vastly different.

Abunai, you certainly are not at your partisan best.

I often have said that you should get out more often, but in this case you could have gleaned information while at home. We don't have to "call" for an investigation as you suggest. The FBI is already investigating the executives of the four firms that are at the heart of the financial mess.

Additionally the FBI is investigating 26 firms for mortgage fraud. And a major bank has been under investigation by the FBI for more than a year regarding connections to drug money laundering activities in Mexico.

Your partisan rant is the type of activity that has gotten us into this mess. But with that being said, isn't the administration that is urging a seemingly never ending bail-out a Republican administration or did they all suddenly convert to being Democrats?

Abunai, you are right about different members of Congress developing legislation to try and help prevent this mess all the way back to the early years of this Republican administration.

Even McCain developed some, but it was never brought up for a vote even though the Republicans controlled Congress for several years. I wonder why?

I realize that all of this has come to a terrible shock to you and it must feel like your whole world is crumbling at this point. The administration hasn't been vigilant in many areas. But this doesn't fit the definition of "homeland security" as far as the administration is concerned.

Now getting back to the topic.......why is it that Paulson and Bernanke don't want any questions, or "conditions" attached to the bail-outs with the exception of a clause to protect them and their cohorts.

If I had a get out of jail free card to take whatever
I want, however much I want, and no one could review
what I took, or what it was used for... well,
I might be tempted to create a "dire need to get this passed"
atmosphere too.

shad -- the Feds are starting to turn over some rocks (to see what slimy little creatures scuttle out), but I seriously doubt if the whole story will ever be told to the public.

Government/Big Business = bedfellows. They won't kiss and tell.

The only certainty here:
you and I and the rest of the suckers who go to work every day and obey the laws and pay taxes -- we will pick up the check. And the people who work on Capitol Hill, along with those in the penthouse offices will, once again, be laughing all the way to the bank.

The story probably won't ever be completely told and the bail-outs do not end with this. The auto firms are apparently getting their money "hidden" in the new budget......but it's kind of a secret, so don't telling anyone..
