Once upon a time there were people who took pride in thinking independently even though it often meant not going along with the crowd.  Democrats took pride in their individual thinking even if it meant huge disagreements within their party that could eventually cost them elections.  Republicans took pride in their independent values with differing views on morality,  reliance on government, and the "protestant work ethic."

Much of that has changed.  So much so that if  a Democrat or Republican differs very much from the talking points of their respective party they find it increasingly necessary to announce themselves as "Independents."

However, the "coming out" is usually done with obvious reluctance and many of the newly stated philosophies and beliefs of these New "Independents" often bear a close resemblance to those of a particular TV personality or talking head.

It makes one wonder about  both the sheep and the shepherds.

Some folks are concerned that the people are becoming sheep instead of independent thinkers.

Others seem more concerned about where the shepherds are leading the sheep.

Which is the most important?

I believe that both are important.

If people are no more than sheep, their votes are worthless and should carry no weight.

A bad shepherd could lead the sheep to the slaughter house.

CynPro, you seem to suggest that they can be complimentary to each other.

But assuming that both exist, as a sheep I would continue to be concerned about any "pit" ahead that I might be led into. Call it survival or self preservation.

Unfortunately the sheep in our country aren't to the point of desperation/survival and aren't yet forced to look ahead.

We seem to be little ahead of the ignorant masses of yesteryear whom couldn't read and had to have everything read and explained to them, subsequently giving power to the educated elite.

Its simple really... the sheep elect the shepherd. If the shepherd isn't doing the job, then you elect a new one! However some sheep seem to like a shepherd that that feeds their agenda and honestly don't have the interest of all the sheep in mind....

Enough of the beating around the bush with this childish antic...

you hit the nail on the head shadows.. the ignorant masses of yesteryear includes being fed information that has been screened by a media that has been found to have lied and mislead the ignorant and misused a right in this country that should come with as large a responsibility to objectivity, and non-partial reporting.

Looks like the cat is out of the bag for the media and many others now from NOW, NAACP, etc that talked one game but walked another.

Even MyFox here has thrown in the towel and given the responsibility of balance and objectivity to every blogger with the new, pre-approval feature in settings. CynPro has figured it out now and is burning any and all comments that might have her defend her posts already...

CynPro.. most everyone here knows your tactics, and likely who you really are as well...

Abunai, thanks for you thoughtful comments. We would have to extend that list of organizations to include many, many liberal and conservative groups and media. This campaign has become one of the nastiest, none productive campaigns that I have ever observed. The attacks are relentless and obscure both the issues and the facts.

Both sides are guilty, but as far as the attacks from the specific campaigns, I believe that the Republicans have become better at negative campaigning than the Democrats have. It seems as though McCain has become unusually vicious and ruthless since he was hit by Bush is South Carolina. That's unfortunate because it has resulted in making him look old and relying on his VP candidate to hold him up instead of his positions on the issues. However, I think that he probably will win.

Abunai, he sure did. Obama's magic act is good, and powerful, and has lulled many into a false sense of hope and security for their future. His taxation, along with his BLEEP-type qualities of defending the nation will wake them from their slumber, although hopefully not too late.

Not being sheep is more important. A perfect example is our choices this year selected by the sheep. JM or BO, it makes no difference, you get the same thing either way, nanny state. The sheep blindly follow the shepherds in being told there is a difference.

Graywolf, I'm in agreement with your final analysis of the choices. It will make little difference since the President doesn't actually run the show.

A line from one of my favorite old songs goes....."Why am I fighting to live if I'm just living to fight." Lot's of applications here.

i dont no how to take your comment you dont get the point of my blog. is it there right to take holidays away from our kids or is it a socialist ruling that takes part i beleave in god and our country.this is the home of the free right. so dont tell me my kids have to learn just what the state says.my sons teacher said some thing like your kids have to just learn about Fla this year for social studys wats up with that.no four fathers no war history nothing to teach them about the country we once lived in that to me is more importion then just learning about fla. there is to much history to be learned

dreamers, that is part of my point. Ask a different person what their kids should be learning in school and you will get a different answer. It certainly should be finally up to the parents, however, the public schools cannot possibly please everyone. Therefore, I suggest closing all public schools, letting people keep their school tax money and decide where and how to educate their kids.

How many kids in the average grade school, maybe 300-500? That's 300-500 families (parents) to please and most of them came from completely different backgrounds. So you can see that the public schools are faced with an impossible task......pleasing all of those folks is impossible.....especially with the budget that they have.

Public schools are a government social program, meant to educate massive numbers of people cheaply. (continued)

As late as the 1600s, girls didn't go to school, and not all boys did either. It was almost mid century before things started getting organized to finally become public schools. Before that, parents had to educated their kids and if the parents didn't know how to read, chances were that the kids wouldn't either. People nowadays are better educated because of public schools.

But now that most parents want more control again, it is probably time to close the public schools. They have served their purpose.

Compare your school tax with what it would cost to send your child to a private school. The costs usually range from $2000 - $8000 per year per child. Do you pay that much in school taxes? I doubt it....few people do.

Maybe it's time for the government to let parents decide for their kids, and to pay their own way, and eliminate the social give-a-way program called public schools. That way you can make all of your own decisions about holidays and everything.

so why do you say it's fair to force my kids to learn something that is false compaired to what i was tought years ago.look there was a way of life that has been interupted here not just my world but alot of people say it.why should i let some one that has different views then i do take my way of life from me and my family.i am out raged that we as AMERICAN'S can let this happen not just in schools but all over this country something is wrong.i have a freiend in A.Z. she told me they dont use christmas eather its happy holiday so nothing wrong there rite its just me it all over.

dreamer, I'm not saying that anything is "fair." However, the public schools can't please everyone with the small budgets that they have and those budgets are even smaller as a result of all of the lawsuits from parents about holidays, recess, playground accidents, fights at school, curriculum disputes, library disputes, computer/internet objections, clothing/uniform objections, grading procedures/methods, graduation requirements, start times, ending times, availability and types of foods for lunch and breakfast, bus schedules, school supplies, Special education programs, athletic programs, after school events, racial discrimination, gender discrimination, etc.

I am very serious in my assertion that it is time to get rid of public schools and go entirely private. The public schools have served their purpose in our nation and it has become too expensive and complicated to keep them open and effective.

Americans should have a choice of how and where to educate their kids.......no more compulsory attendance or public schools.
