Regardless of political persuasion, most people would agree that a seventeen year old girl who is not married and is five months pregnant is facing tremendous challenges ahead.  If the girl gets married, the probability that the marriage will last is not high.

Both the emotional and physical changes ahead pose  the greatest challenges and are the longest lasting as far as the effects of  the pregnancy.   A young unwed mother needs as much understanding and support from those around her as possible.  The social stigma of being an unwed mother usually results in horrible shame and embarrassment.

The recent revelation of Sarah Palin's 17 year old daughter, Bristol has made an already difficult situation for the girl even more difficult.  She has suddenly been thrust into the international spotlight for all to see and criticize if they so desire.  It is not a position that anyone would envy.

Would it have been better for Bristol if Sarah Palin had turned down John McCain's invitation to run for Vice President of the United States?

Should she have put her daughter's feelings and welfare ahead of her own ambitions?

What a STUPID Question..Of COURSE she should have turned the offer down and Burdened her child FOR LIFE with the Knowledge that had SHE not been such a slut her Mother would have MADE HISTORY..

Instead..Her Mother Supported her,,Treated this Pregnancy NOT as though she was a LEPER and demonstrated that FAMILIES can move Forward despite whatever comes along..WHAT an IDIOT..

If you've managed to catch the Sarcasm evident in the first paragraph then you are FAR too sensetive to be asking SUCH QUESTION that one would expect from a SEXIST PIG..

The thing that I dont understand is What the hell is the big deal that the 17 Y.O. girl being pregnant. She isnt the first 17 Y.O.to get pregnant and will not be the last. Family values, yes mom stands behind her daughter while building her career.

Everybody agrees that such questions as these are inappropriate at best and FAR outside of the boundaries of common decency..

Questions such as these are something you'd expect to hear from people who talk about others behind their back and they reveal FAR more about the character, or LACK thereof,, of the Questioner then they do the subject..

Ericjhach, you bring up an excellent question when you say "what the hell is the big deal that the 17 Y.O. girl being pregnant."

However, even in the past on this blog there have been heated discussions about "unwed mothers" and suggestions that some of those women should be sterilized or have their "tubes tied." Pretty extreme suggestions about how to treat women who give birth without being married.

At least this issue finally being forced into the international spotlight may serve to make it "acceptable" or even commonplace to have children out of wedlock. Unwed mothers everywhere should be thankful that our society was finally forced to realistically deal with the issue. No longer will there be "illegitimate" births where people are made to feel as though they are "mistakes."

These questions aren't being asked to "enlighten" ANYONE..

They're being asked to at BEST..Embarrass someone and at worse,, Condemn them..

IF you're GOING to ask such questions in the CONTEXT that you DO..At LEAST have the GUTS to ADMIT that you did..

What a complete idiot shadows!

Yea.. hang that on the daughter's neck for life!

"I was going to become the second most powerful leader of the free world, but YOU blew it!"

Is that what you hacks really think?

How many parents with careers out there for fear of embarrassment to the employer should quit their jobs then?

My own 17 year old daughter has made me a grandparent TWICE before she was out of highschool, thanks to the ex-wife and her family that thought taking her pills away would make her stop having sex! My own realism, and attempt at prevention, was ridiculed by some Arkansas liberal nuts in denial of their little angle's behavior, and they now can't look me in the eyes anymore!

But she carried those children, and they are cute as can be!

Abunai, do you honestly think that Sarah is cruel enough to say something to her daughter like "I was going to become the second most powerful leader of the free world, but YOU blew it?" I pictured her as being more of a compassionate conservative.

BTW, I didn't suggest that she should have quit her "job" as Governor of the great state of Alaska. This latest appointment that she accepted when offered by McCain is to run for election. It is not a job yet, but rather a concerted effort for political gain.

As far as the practice and/or philosophy of birth control.....I thought that Palin didn't believe in birth control?

THIS is NOT "Getting to KNOW Someone"..

THIS is creating an IMAGE in the WORST possible Light and THEN asking people to make JUDGEMENTAL Decisions based on that Image..It is a SMEAR Campaign and has NO place in ANY Legitimate Didcussion..It belongs in the Gutter from whence it came..

FINALLY..The REAL motivation becomes CLEAR..THIS isn't about the welfare of ANYONE,, LEAST of ALL the Daughter..It IS instead a Callous SACRIFICE of the Daughter on the Alter og POLITICS..Get the Mother by HARMING the Family...JUSTto advance a Political Agenda....It is PURELY a Politically Motivated Smear..

Hawkeye, permit to help you with your memory problems. The final question of this blog was:

Should she have put her daughter's feelings and welfare ahead of her own ambitions?

Notice that the question was in reference to Palin possibly placing her political ambitions on hold, in consideration of her daughter's situation and subsequent feelings. A partisan agenda is not mentioned anywhere in the blog.

It is a focus on the child's need for support during this difficult time, not about partisan politics. Try and focus on the child instead of your political party.

Should a parent be willing to make sacrifices for the sake of their children? I guess that it depends very much on one's family values.

The Partisanship is EVIDENCE by the FACT that NO SUCH QUESTION would EVER be asked of a Democrat and would be LOUDLY condemned EVEN by the SUGGESTIONS of such Questions..

One WONDERS how you MISSED other "Questions" that have arisen such as her being a NAZI sympathizer because she wore a Buchanan button out of COURTESY for his visit..THAT seems to be be YOUR level of Shamelessness. ..

But FEAR Not...

She's NOT George W.Bush..SHE will address these so called "Questions" and in SO doing put them,,AND their questioners in their Proper place..

It's going to be something to see..You guys picked a fight with the WRONG person..

Hawkeye, since YOU brought it up, is she really "a NAZI sympathizer.."

I never mistook her for George W. Bush. She doesn't look a bit like him.

But I am glad to hear that she will put everyone "in their Proper place." I have come to understand that you prefer to have everyone pigeon holed, labeled, and put in their Proper place".....the world then makes "perfect" sense doesn't it?

I don't understand you suggestion that anyone "picked a fight" with Sarah. So far from what I have seen the discussion has been limited to issues and information that she has publicly "announced."

You aren't suggesting that she should be treated with kid gloves because she is a woman are you? That would be a "sexist" remark and would bring down the wrath of any respectable feminist.

I hope sincerely that her speech tonight doesn't lean toward portraying herself or her family as "victims." The misty, quivering voice will only reach so far. Biden was pretty close to the limit as has been McCain at times.

Hawkeye, for a post that you consider "beneath contempt, you sure did have a lot to say about it. I guess that you are just a contemptuous kind of person. I have noticed that you try hard.

How's that for a ii-V-I progression.?

NOT! shadows.. you can't wiggle out of it. The fact is the radical liberals including those in the closet like yourself, are trying to put enough heat on this issue that the Mother out of love, would simply step away from this offer of VP and thus save all the liberals from a fate worse then death of their own agenda!

Its been exposed, you can't spin it, nor stuff it back in the bag.

If Gov. Palin were to back out now, she would become the martyr of the REAL feminist in this country and the left would literally have to fear for their very lives!

Its too late! She has already been accepted by too many, and McCain has shown up the Democrats for being all talk and no action in a way never illustrated before because the liberal media can't control the message anymore!

Why do you care? This isn't your family, this isn't your daughter. I doubt she will be on the welfare or Wic program so it isn't going to cost you anything. Some 17 y.o. make good mothers. I had my first one at 18. My baby was premature and only lived for 3 weeks. My next one came at 20. I was a mature and caring mother who had a mother who taught me everything about babies and how to care for them. I didn't read a Dr. Spock book, my mother was a book. She had 8 and raised 2 of my cousins as well.
This is the most stupid post I have seen around here in a long time. What would a man know about carrying a baby full term and giving birth? NADA...you aren't even qualified to pose such a question.

Thanks for your maternal history. But getting back to Palin, it's all about decision-making and what effect her personal values will have on that process.

As you might recall, she is running for the Office of the Vice Presidency, which is a little different than child rearing. You are probably correct in assuming that most men including all of the former Presidents and Vice Presidents haven't experienced carrying a baby full term and giving birth. In fact, I doubt that it is even a prerequisite requirement for either office. It is amazing to think that any of them have had any degree of success without having those experiences.

BTW, in case you weren't listening, Sarah is the person who announced her daughter's pregnancy to the entire world.......even without my input. And my "qualifications" didn't seem to be relevant to her decision either.

ZipitHippy, that's a pretty good Biden story except that you left out the part that his son told about how he had to convince his father to go ahead and take office. That's why he took the oath next to his bed.

You are comparing Joe Biden's foreign relations experience to that of Palin? Has she even traveled outside the U.S. except for possibly a car trip to go through Canada on the way to and from Alaska? Of course McCain can tutor her on the locations of the various countries. LOL

The one strength that I understand that she has over the present Vice President is that she is a good marksman. LOL

Hawkeye, you poor soul grasping at straws again.

Check out her position and record on opposing Congressional earmarks. That should provide a more relevant issue about her for you to research. It will provide a glimpse of how she has exercised those "executive" skills in the past as Mayor of Wasilla.

Don't panic, you can research it on the web without having to read a book or anything! LOL

Let me guess, you also must think she should be at home as she has 5 children and one of them is a special needs child?
Are we really living under rocks now a days? if this was a Dem, no one would question her child's status.
She's pregnant? Wow, just like a lot of girls now a days. Only differnece is she has a relationship with the father and her parents SUPPORT her.
Who are any of us to question the unconvential way the family works? I happen to the main bread winner in our family and my husband is the one who cares for most of the household needs and cares for our son. Does that make me a bad mom? Him a better parent?
No, it means we found a way to make our lives work.
Get out of this woman's family and focus on real issues!!

shadows read my blog
Sep 4, 2008 | 8:09 PM

Ok, let's focus on real issues as you call them, although it does sound like you have been under a rock for quite some time.

Geraldine Ferraro a democrat, covered this ground way back in 1984 when she nominated as the first VP candidate of a major political party. She had three children and yes her family was under scrutiny coincidently she only had one debate with George H.W. Bush the republican VP candidate. Her experience was compared to his and questioned even though she had been a three term member of Congress. Barbara Bush was questioned after the debate and had some very unflattering things to say about her. Read all about it on Wikipedia if you don't have any books on it.

So this kid glove thing and hiding behind the gender issue is really old hat......even thought the Republicans would like to make everyone think that it is new.

You are right that the daughter's pregnancy should not be an issue. In fact, I maintain that SHE should never have introduced the topic and rather than spending so much time talking about her "off-limits" family, she might want to talk about the needs of our nation such as the economy, foreign affairs, immigration, etc. Almost half a third of her speech last night was about her and her family. Another large part was about McCain.....but she presented few details about the issues considered important by the American public.

shadows read my blog

NoLieDudes, you unintentionally brought up a good point. The roles of the Democrats and much of their actions seem to have indicate a continuing reversal during the past several decades. Not only on the gender issue, but also on the size of government, budget deficits and increased government spending, earmarks, illegal immigration, etc. Maybe the democrats will be the conservatives of tomorrow.

It reminds me of some of the conditions back when Teddy Roosevelt was in the mix......but Palin is certainly no Teddy Roosevelt.....in fact he thought that big business had gained too much power and that there had to be a balance maintained between the interests of the people and the interests of big business.
