Almost an hour after the FAA "computer glitch" that resulted in the grounding of many commercial aircraft, news organizations that contacted the Department of Homeland Security were told that the Department didn't know what the problem was.

Illegal immigrants continue to cross our borders, ID theft, especially in Florida, has skyrocketed, and airport security has been shown to be plagued with problems.

We have had numerous incidences of our food supply being contaminated, dog food contamination,  children's products tainted with lead, etc. and even unsafe water sources in some areas of the country have been found.

How much confidence do you have in the Department of Homeland Security?

 With a budget of more than $46 billion for 2008, should we expect more or less effectiveness?

Is anyone being held accountable?

HOMELAND SECURITY is a sick waste of TAX PAYERS
TAX DOLLARS.. It was formed to give jobs to friends, who couldn't get a job picking up garbage.. I sleep well at night knowing that I can protect myself & Family....

rottweiler, I absolutely agree with your assessment. The billions of dollars could be better spent if that is even possible in this country......it seems as though we either waste it or send it to other countries.

As far as depending on the Government to protect me 100%, no I do not feel safe. You know those bags of salad greens you buy in the produce section at the grocery store? They say, "Triple washed, safe and ready to eat!" I say, "Triple washed by who? Not by my Momma, not by me! So, I'm not taking any chances!" I triple wash them MYSELF, when I get home! Do I trust 911 to save me in time from an intruder in my home, a carjacker, strong-armed robber? NOT ON MY LIFE! Do I trust my own wits, deadazz aiming capabilities, with every firearm from a .38, .40, .45, .22, 10gauge, 30-30, 257 Roberts, Mini 14, you name it? You BET I DO!

I trust the homeland sercurity as far as I can throw a cinder block (barely an inch). Every single computer has a bug in it, that's why you never use the latest technology until it becomes old.

If everyone feels pretty much the same as far as the Department of Homeland Security being ineffective, then why do the American people allow not only their money to be wasted on it, but also the privacy infringements that the government has implemented since 9/11?

As davidpatrick344 alluded, there is more scrutiny placed on American citizens and less on illegal aliens. Isn't there something wrong with that picture?

My parents used to live in Arizona and were always running into illegals that did not speak spanish, they spoke some form of arabic. They were always well dressed and did not stay in the area long.

caer, that's something that I have never heard before. Do you know anything more about those illegals, where they came from, etc.? The activities in Western states are making them sound more like the "wild west" all of the time.

Homeland What? I'll pass.
God may work in mysterious ways, but he does Work.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
My Dogs and Guns they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD
Forever.

Vlad, now come on.....with all of this money that our government is spending on protecting you, do you still expect to have to be so prepared?

Of course I still don't understand why we even need to be concerned about terrorism in our country. Weren't we told that one of the reasons for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan is so that we won't have to fight here at home?

Yes Shadows, they did tell us that, but it sounds a lot like defeating communism in Vietnam...

This is not meant antagonistically.
After all the things bush has done and not been impeached do you really think the public can do anything about the government ? Lets not forget the recount in Florida that made bush president or the electoral collage that has gone against the voter to elect who they wanted in office.

Question is, how do we make them stop ?

I feel safe enough not to have : body guards, guard dogs, armored plate and armored glass in my vechicle, and a secure walled compound to live in. There are a lot of places on this earth where the entire population need all of the above, but they can't afford it. To date there hasn't been another 9-11, by no means is this blind praise there are issues. When SWORN into office, ELECTED OFFICIALS pledge to abide by and uphold the laws of the land. Do they ? The crime issues are simple, the current punishment is no longer a deterant. The ID theft problem would be greatly reduced by executing those found guilty, it is not uncommon to see individuals up before a court on a third or fourth conviction after serving one year or less. I have yet to hear of a DEAD criminal committing another crime.

Meb452m, you make some good points, but I couldn't advocate something as "cruel" as capital punishment. I do however advocate the removal of limbs that will prevent the criminal from committing the same crime again. For example, armed robbery might result in losing the hand that was used to hold the gun.

These losses of limbs would provide visual reminders to those who would think about committing certain crimes, including those of a sexual nature. Of course after one limb is removed, others could be substituted for subsequent crimes.

Finally, the person might be missing both legs, arms and other appendages. Tough to commit crimes in that state, and what an example for our youth who would dare think about it. Even if the government had to pay disability to the limb-less person confined to sitting on the street, it would still be less expensive than incarceration.

Shadows, some of the biggest complaints that I've heard on the " War on Terror " are invasion of privacy rights in reguards to telecommunication intercepts, personal property search procedures and delays involved in screening airflight passengers. When the very freedoms that you have are used by those that seek to destroy you, you have but two choices give some ground on your rights or leave the enemy and his new found " high- ground " uncontested. We are in agreement that the current criminal justice system is no longer a deterant, only the punishment is up for debate. The real questions are : 1) In 1776, a Democratic Republic was born, a novel experiment in self-goverment at the time, after 232 years has the experiment failed ? 2) Is a more monolithic form of goverment required, something more rigid, something more singular in purpose to meet the economic/enviromental/political enviroment the world is evolving into ?

meb452m, You have questions suitable for at least one other blog. However, I think that the "Democratic Republic" could be considered successful, but only if it is viewed in an organic sense as something that grows, or evolves.

For that to happen the rigidity that some want to impose on it would be an impediment. Always clinging to the past is obviously a conflicting philosophy or course of action. The collective intelligence and wisdom of the people are strong and reflect those changes that are needed to keep our nation strong.

Influence and control in and of government seem to have become synonymous terms when in fact they should remain distinct. The ultimate government control must be "of the people" even though lobbyists will have varying degrees of influence.

I like the growth or evolution point you've made. Homeland Security is something that is a growth of goverment due to percieved need. I don't question the need for security, but when you have the CIA, the FBI, and in addition the Armed Forces and their intellegence networks why is there a need for an additional entity to monitor the same things ? If co-ordination,or co-operation is an issue deal with it within the existing structure. I believe it to be more cost effective and effective in executing orders. I don't believe more is neccessarily better, too many cooks in the kitchen. Thanks for your comments shadows.
