I blog on this subject because it has been a heated discussion around our house for the last week or so.  My son has been asked to support "global warming" in an essay and of course we'd rather he just debunk the junk.  We've gone back and forth between having him write a paper debunking and criticizing it or having him do the liberally biased paper.  We have decided to have him to the liberal paper and then at the end of it put one extra paragraph plainly stating that those are not his beliefs and that he is very offended at having to support fiction.  The kids at another school are having the same problem.  They were asked to write a report critical of Sara Palin.  The five Republicans in the room stood up and told the teacher if he'd like to debate the issue, they'd be more then willing.  To which the teacher said "F@#$ You".  They have filed complaints on his treatment of them and there is an investigation being conducted.  Being that it is a college (liberal hot bed) I'm sure that nothing will happen.  I do admire the student's bravery in taking on the subject.

I agree with you that everyone should stand up for their beliefs. I disagree with them, but I think you have the right to stand up against what you don't think is true. I had to write a paper once on the five best presidents and the teacher gave us a list, there was Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Jefferson and at number two he had Regan. I got stuck with Regan in my class and I do not think he belongs on the top five list. I told the teacher that and he told me well he did a lot for this country and I should get over it. I did it and swallowed my pride. I kinda did the same as your son and put in "while others belong on this list as well...." and I listed Kennedy, Teddy, Truman, and Grant.

I'm just wondering why everyone thinks college is a liberal hot bed? I thought people go to college to get a good education. Is it because college's produce smarter Americans so they become librals? I don't know whats every republicans problem with college. Maybe they are mad because they didn't go to college? Or because they teach scientific facts in college?

Most college professors are incredibly liberal in their beliefs. I do not think that because someone has gone to college they are smart or qualified to do anything. I've just experienced too many people who have completed college who couldn't think their way out of a wet paper bag. The assignment was definitely teaching the teacher's point of view, not opening a discussion. Kids in school (yes that includes college kids too) are in a captive audience and teachers should not be using that to further their world views. The whole idea that college is for furthering education is laughable. People go to college or send their kids there so that they have a piece of paper which helps them get a better/higher paying job. With the exception of math and hard science, I've never paid so much to learn so little.

As you well know, writing is not my strong point. This article illustrates my point far better then my ability permits.

Some teachers ask students to debate a subject
just to sharpen their debating skills. It may
not have anything to do with a particular view,
just an exercise in alternative thinking and
developing debating skills for any circumstance.
These skills can be very beneficial in business.

Cyn, you obviously didn't look at the source article. When the students offered to debate him his response was to cuss them out, starting with "F@#$ You". To the best of my knowledge that has nothing to do with debating. Additionally, a debate amongst students would be great. It is absolutely inappropriate for a professor to even give his or her views. The professor should simply play the impartial mediator or devils advocate for both sides. This was nothing but typical liberal college crap.

There is a VAST difference between having to write a paper on someone and being told to write a NEGATIVE Hit piece on them..

ONE is to elicit an opinion while the OTHER is to IMPOSE one..

If they object to the assignments and teachings of the college, they should withdraw and find another college to attend which is more in line with their philosophies.

Isn't that what free enterprise is all about.....choice? Surely there are some Republican/Conservative colleges around since it is such a profitable business to be in.

We're talking about state run colleges here. As long as we the tax payer is having to foot any part of the bill, we should not have to put up with stuff like this. If it were a privately run entity, I would agree with you, Shadows.

Free choice is NOT about being chased out of ANY Publically Funded College..

THAT'S like saying that Free Choice in abortions means that you have to go to MEXICO for it..

There is a story out today about ANOHTER Colorado professor that has not only forced his Republican students to do anti-Palin work, but forced them to identify themselves in class, and then have them ridiculed by liberal students while he sat there and laughed!

ONLY after a formal complaint was filed on the school, that the hack professor had to change the assignment to be balanced!

I realize myfoxorlando wont report on radical professors, as they scrub this very site when we find them at UCF, but we need to build new colleges and start some competition!

THAT is just wrong! Students should be allowed to think freely on topics such as that assignment. It isn't Algebra, not Physics
or Trigonometry. There isn't a teacher on this planet who has the right to tell a student F-YOU! My Dad was a University Professor for nearly 60, yes 60 years. He JUST retired at 83, last year. He said that behavior from a Professor is outrageous, unprofessional, if not downright illegal and beyond anything he'd ever heard of. How dare a teacher try to FORCE students to do POLITICAL work or name their affiliation against their will! Unfreakin' believable!

It is indeed unbelievable for a "professor" to say f u to a student for wanting debate instead of having to write a negative paper they do NOT believe in.

This is the most outrageous thing I have EVER heard of in any educational facility.

That "professor" should be fired!

A very typical liberal indeed. Do not allow debate, but force everyone to believe as you do!

Sounds like a blogger we have here! You know who!

There is a difference between an assigned essay and an editorial. In government class debates I didn't always get the side of the issue I believed, but you do it.....It's a test of wit, and I would do it and I'd also make it known that I didn't agree...after I won.

One of the biggest lessons that you learn in college is how to navigate around Ahole's who hold positions of authority. They seem to flock to teaching college since they cant function too well at a real job. Very valuable in the real world. Your son will one day thank each Ahole he encounters in college they will prepare him for the workforce.

For a teacher to ask a student to debate in favor of something he doesn't agree with is teching the student to LIE!! And guess what, you're the ones who are paying them to do it. Then we scratch our heads and wonder why so many kids are so dishonest today. Go figure.

Relax, I'm not suing anyone! My son will have to deal with liberal @ssholes in the future, this is just some good practice. We figured out how to have him handle it.

This is part of what it takes to be a conservative. That is, not going sue-happy because I don't agree with something. I'd rather have a discussion and find a way around it. We are the party of adults, not screaming children. BTW, he got an A on his paper.
