so what if we had 8 hurricanes in 3 years! boo hoo for the insurance companies. I've lived in florida since the late sixties, the only bad hurricane until 04 was andrew in south florida! lets see 9 hurricanes in 35 years! GEE, what happened to all the money paid to insurance companies in all those years when we didn't get any hurricanes? it seems to me that they should have had plenty of money stocked away to pay for a few isolated losses over 35 years. BUT WAIT! after all the presidents of those companies needed all those mega bonuses they paid themselves, instead of investing the money to increase the amount on hand in case of need. do the math they wasted their resources and want us to foot the bill! NO FREAKIN WAY!!!!

Polecat, you have an EXTREMELY well made point here! Where DID all that money go? Hmmmm, could it be the gigantic bonuses the upper echelon in the insurance industry rakes in yearly? Consider the lifestyles of some of those highly paid mongols... The homes, the boats, the cars, the planes, the vacations... one can only guess at the lavish lifestyle one could lead with the salaries, the perks and the bonuses that some of them make! Think about all those premiums, year after year, without any catastrophic events to pay out for...collecting, collecting, collecting. More and more people moving into the state, day after day, year after year. And then they snivel and whine after, like you said, 9 hurricanes in 35 years! I believe the record profits may come from the sheer numbers of insured people in the state.

You said it brother, and if you do the math (and your house is a strong and well maintained* as mine) you will pay more in premiums (every 5/7 years) than it will ever cost you to fix your house!

I do spend $3 to $5 thousand a year on upgrades.........so insurance is a suckers bet if I never see a cat 5 direct hit! (yes I am knocking on wood LOL)

I'm glad something is being done about insurance, but, my insurance is $1275 per year and my property taxes are $1634.27 per year (my property is 1/4 acre). Can we please do something about the property taxes too?

rexmom, nothing will be done about the property taxes as long as politicians keep stating that (we have not raised taxes in years) that statement IS true. what they don't state is that there is NO need to raise property taxes as long as they can artificially raise property value so you pay more taxes (but NOT higher taxes). this way they get more money without having to go through the voters to approve of the increase. it's a crock but nothing except removing the crooks in charge is going to solve this problem!

Your right Polecat. I still think it's BULL@#$% that my property insurance is more than my mortgage payment.

It's all about greed. There is no way my house is 'worth' what I can get it 'appraised' for. Just because some developer bought a field and plunked up 9 houses valued at 500k(to start), that my house built in 1988 raised ANY in value. Sure, we have kept it up rather nicely, but it's still a 1500sf 3/2 with a pool. The artificial inflation of property and home values is unbelievable. Not everyone wants to flip their home. Some of us just want to be able to stay in it until we die. I also don't want to keep paying for others lifestyles when I've been smart enough NOT to buy property on land that has been swept clear several times, and even without storms, the natural progress of the North American Plate will have it all in the ocean in 10-20 years anyhow. Pull out those old maps-arial ones are better. Look at where the coast line was, and where it is. Given enough time, those of us inland will have our own beach front.

Came to Florida in the late sixties on a bike, lived in Orlando since early 70's, I'm ex-military, still ride a motorcycle.don't intend to let cagers or the congestion stop me. and I always wear a helmet, carry insurance and a piece legally.
