There have been many stories commenting on the crowd reaction at the latest rallies of VP candidate, Governor Sarah Palin.    She has gone on the offensive against Sen. Obama in an extremely personal way.    The attacks have been very inspiring to the crowds.    There have been numerous reports of people yelling "terrorist" and at least one man has screamed "kill him" at yesterday's rally.

The anger of the crowd has also been directed towards the media.   At least one African-American technician was called a "racial ephitaph" and then was told by another crowd member to "Sit down, BOY!".

Most people just see personal attacks  as a sign that the McCain campaign is desperate and would rather talk about anything than the economy.  And that is probably true!  But to work a crowd up to the point where there are cries to KILL the opposing candidate takes this election into a very scary place.   This is not the type of discourse that our founding fathers had in mind when they dreamed up this exotic scheme called "Democracy".

Because of Sen. Obama's unusual background he is very open to character attacks.   His father is foreign born.   Less than 8 years after the attacks of 9/11, his years in Muslim Indonesia give us even more to fear because we don't "know him" that well.   His college teachings make him seem elitist and not "one of us".  Many on the left would have you believe that these fears of Americans are nothing but blatant racism.    But they are wrong.   It is more than that and it is less than that.   More because there are a great many Americans with legitimate objections to Sen. Obama's policies.   Less because it is not just "rascism" like we think of during the Civil Rights Movement.   There are no dogs & fire hoses or burning crosses.    It's a kinder, gentler form of bias.   But it is still a bias against that which we are not familiar with.

I think it is the combination of all of these things that make some of us wonder about Sen. Obama.  He's not like other candidates we grew up with.   But it is too simple to pin the problem on any one thing like racism.  And lucky for John McCain because it gives him plenty of ammunition to attack with.

I think our fears have more to do with our buddy, Al!   Who is Al, you ask?    I don't know him...you do.      We all know an Al in our life.    "Al" is the person we see to be the exception to the stereotype.

We may not like immigrants because they are lazy and steal jobs and don't pay taxes...they're not like my pal Al, who I work with.   He's ok.  (Cause you know him.)

We like working for Al, he's not like most white people who try to keep a "brother" down.   He's always got your back!

"AL" plays on my school's baseball team, his family eats funny food but he's a great pitcher!

"AL" just moved here from New York City, but he's pretty smart for a "city slicker"

I go to church with Al's wife and she's so sweet, not angry like a lot of "those" women!

You know Al.   Maybe he's the gay man who's not like the "rest".    Maybe he's the Hindu who waits on you at your favorite restaurant.    But Al is the great hero in the battle against racism & predjudice in this country.    He's the ONE you KNOW that helps you realize that all ethnic & cultural groups are composed of people.   Some good and some bad.   All you had to do to realize this is to get to know AL.    He's basicly like you and me.   Loves his wife and kids, wants to provide for them, wants to see his children grow up in the greatest nation on earth.  It's hard to continue believing something about a culture, race, gender or whatever when you actually KNOW someone who is a part of that group.    The "idealized" group becomes a little less real than the PERSON you know.

As Sen. Obama has become better known to more and more of the electorate, his favorability ratings have also increased.   He's not so strange and foreign anymore to a larger portion of the electorate.    He's becoming a political "AL".

This is natural.    What is not natural is to try to stir up hatred and fear for a fellow American.  It's wrong.   Debate the issues.   Discuss the failings of Obama's policies, but remember that he is still one of us.     He may be wrong in his judgment but he is NOT a terrorist infiltrator.   That's just silliness that gets promoted when someone gets behind in the polls.

So in the hopes of reminding everyone that Sen. Obama is an American, a father & a husband:  here are some photos from his past.    They look a lot like photos all of us have.     They are part of America's Story.     They should not influence you to vote for or against him because there is nothing special about them.   They are a part of "Al's Story"    and not the photos of a terrorist or traitor.

We must focus not on the personal for this election but on the issues.    We must vote for who we think will promise the best future for our children & grandchildren.

Your right we all need to forget about all the people who has formed Obama's life and why he has to hide all of them. Just because there is so many things about Obama he is trying so desperatly to keep secret we all need to remember he has kids.....Nice divertion

The Libs. made a MOVIE about the assassination of President Bush..

They Accused him of Terrorism.. They accused him of committing Genocide in New Orleans..

NONE of THAT was TRUE..

Frankly,,

I don't think that your side has ANY room to talk..ESPECIALLY over an ISSUE that is NOT a personal attack but a LEGITIMATE question of Character and Integrety,, or LACK thereof...

Hawkeye:

You have NEVER heard me defend that movie! It was inexcusable & wrong! That doesn't give a free pass to "your" side to make the kind of statements made by the McCain campaign.

This is America. We are ALL Americans! Americans do not decide elections through violence & assassination! Good Americans do everything they can to control the idiots who think that threats of violence or murder against political figures is ok!

Your Comment is FAR more acceptable on the "Fair and Balanced" scale then was your post..

IF you had originally cited BOTH sides in your criticism my comment would have been a bit different..

For Instance..I would have said that such radical mentalities and the subsequent responses to which YOU refer are NOT the fault of EITHER camdidate..NOR is it the fault of what they say...

I would have said that though I oppose an Obama Presidency I have NO REASON to believe that HE would support such sentiments any more then would ANY other SANE Candidate..

I would have said that to blame EITHER candidate for the outrages of ANY and ALL who might have heard their words is a bit rediculous and to seek to stifle either side in reaction TO those outrages is downright UnAmerican in and of itself...

I ALSO think that efforts to get to the bottom of SERIOUS questions regarding the Potential Leader of the Free World are ANYTHING but wrong or Improper.. The Office of the Presidency reflects the SOUL of America and it is IMPORTANT to have SOME knowledge of the Soul that takes ON the Job..Indeed,,to question is NOT only NOT wrong,,it is OUR responsibility..

One MUST examine their PAST to get BEYOND the carefully sculptured political "Image" that THEY have so fastidiously conjured up for Public Consumption in order to observe the "Content of Character" that lies beneath that Image...

NO issue is as IMPORTANT as is the approach TO that Issue BASED on that "Content of Character" for if History has taught us ANYTHING,, FAR too often it turns out that the so called Solution is O

Hawk, don't be so hard on Jimmy's presidency, it is what he has done AFTER that has trumped any accomplishments anybody has perceived his presidency to have had.

nemokc, very thought provoking, however wrong it is

you have a lot of learnin' to get up on

As far as someone assisinating Obama? I would not be upset if it happened. I truly believe he is the biggest threat to the United States. I'd bet my life on it.

As far as him being this "AL", he is far more distant than that.

Too bad you think that way. You write intelligently, but the content is lacking in logic.

Nice blog, if you live in a Disney-type world....Obama's a street thug activisit; nothing more. He's been propelled to the forefront by liberal hacks, such as Pelosi, Reid, and Biden....he's the worst choice we could have for president. Your blog, and it's weepy satire is typical of the rhetoric spewed by liberals. Dems only want to "help" the needy minorities, if they can keep them down..."Down, boy, down...there, be a good little minority, and let me be your saviour."

Nah, Obama is a dirty and corrupt as they come. Throw in a dash fo racism, socialism and arrogance.

what's funny is I've planned for an Obama presidency; however, the "fun-loving, emptyheaded liberals," haven't....he's gonna get you!

Here's an update on "AL"

FROM PHILLIP BERG, ESQ. about lawsuite filed against Obama's claim to citizenship

Berg is “Outraged” that Obama & DNC Hide Again Behind Legal Issues as their attorney files a Motion for Protective Order to “not” Answer Admissions & Production of Documents while Betraying Public in not Producing Documents proving Obama is “qualified” to be a candidate for President.

It is believed Obama is an “illegal alien”

Country is Headed to a Constitutional Crisis

(Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania – 10/06/08) - Philip J. Berg, Esquire, the Attorney who filed suit against Barack H. Obama challenging Senator Obama’s lack of “qualifications” to serve as President of the United States, announced today that Obama and Democratic National Committee [DNC] filed a Joint Motion for Protective Order to Stay Discovery Pending a Decision on the Motion to Dismiss (which was) filed on 09/24/08.

While legal, Berg stated he is “outraged as this is another attempt to hide the truth from the public; it is obvious that documents do not exist to prove that Obama is qualified to be President.” The case is Berg v. Obama, No. 08-cv-04083.

Their joint motion indicates a concerted effort to avoid the truth by attempting to delay the judicial process, although legal, by not resolving the issue presented: that is, whether Barack Obama meets the qualifications to be President.

It is obvious that Obama was born in Kenya and does not meet the “qualifications” to be President of the United

Miller v. Albright, 523 U.S. 420 (1998): A child born overseas to an American father and a foreign mother (not married) is not a U.S. citizen unless paternity is established before an established age (in this case 21). This case challenged the law on the grounds that U.S. law requires no explicit acknowledgment of parenthood in the case of a foreign-born child to an American mother and a foreign father (not married).

So even if you are right (and you're not) and he was born in Kenya. His mother was American & that makes him a natural born citizen.

Berg is WAY off base.

So much MISinformation about Obama going around.
Some people should try reading a real newspaper.
Also, the Truth Test section on the right side of the page on FOX
provides links to unbiased information sites about candidates.

Republicans believe that growth must start at the TOP
and TRICKLE DOWN to the working class. That way, workers
stay hungry enough that they work as hard as possible.
At the same time, it makes lots of money for the company.

That may sound like a good plan, but what happens when those
companies decide to KEEP the extra money they got from
special tax cuts & loopholes, instead of investing the extra money
back into the company to grow more jobs?

We've seen the amount of corporate corruption sky-rocket in
recent years. We're not talking about the little mom & pop
companies of yesterday, who actually cared about their employees.

What we have now, are a lot of big businesses who will do
whatever it takes to keep their money in their pockets, including
moving our jobs overseas so they can profit from slave labor.

We need a real change. "Trickle down" economics don't work.
We can't survive another 4 years of Bush-McCain-onomics.

Berg's not off base, it's the liberal media covering for OBama. Hawaii's not that big, and being that Obama and I have the exact same birth date...and I can get a clear copy of mine...in a short time...there's absolutely no reason for him to file motions to prevent discovery. So, if he's a citizen why doesn't he produce?

Maybe you should read a real newspaper, Cynpro...you stayed glued to obama's website, cutting and pasting like it's the gospel...such a moron.

Berg is off base.

Obama's mother is an American citizen. If either your mother or father is an American, you are considered an American citizen with full rights. The only difference is that if you claim citizenship through your father you have to prove paternity before your 21st birthday.

Since he is the ONLY candidate I have ever heard of being asked to provide a birth certificate, maybe he's just being contrary and refusing to produce it. The same way my wife who is 3rd generation Mexican-American REFUSES to prove citizenship whenever possible. It's insulting that just because your name is Lopez you are considered an illegal immigrant until you prove otherwise!

The majority of you who have submitted comments to this post are aware of my affinity towards ANYTHING in life OTHER THAN politics and religion. That being said...I rather enjoyed the post, as I believe it exhibited accuracy in its depiction of "Al" and his interaction with society.

Now...excuse my ignorance, Hawkeye...but, what movie are you referring to about the assassination of Bush?...
And, if you will please indulge my ignorance as well TM6068......How exactly have you prepared for an Obama Presidency?...

The Movie uses actors and digital manipulation of real footage to show a fictional account of Bush being gunned down after delivering a speech in Chicago….

nemokc, good blog and you brought up some great points. However, it could be that in underlying the fears of Obama being black and educated is another fear that has the ability to affect more people than just the uneducated and/or racist individuals in our society.

It is very much the fact that he came from a humble background and was able to succeed in spite of many financial and societal obstacles. In other words he is a glowing example of the American dream/success.

But also he is a reminder to those who haven't been as successful for one reason or another, that the American dream is still possible for those who work hard and make the correct decisions/choices. It must be tough for those who haven't been as successful to truly accept responsibility for their own actions.

McCain on the other hand came from a privileged background and should more "naturally" have been expected to be a success in life. Obama "stepped out of line" when he moved from underprivileged to privileged.

Nice try shadows. It is NOT about black and educated.

It is about total lack of experience, refusing to produce a legitimate birth certificate, and the lies he has been espousing on every available media.

His warchest is overflowing, and he has the bucks to continue his ragfest on McCain.

I bet he is happy he sucked a few mindless children such as yourself to follow his pied piper politics.

You should feel very proud.
