Hot on the heels of his explanation for why he no longer wears a flag pin, presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama was forced to explain why he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.

According to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171, During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.

'As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides, 'Obama said. 'There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.'

If Oba ma doesn't '...want to be perceived as taking sides...' then whose side is he on? 

The President of The United States is supposed to do exactly that.
Taking the side of the USA is precisely the job of the President.
Could he really be so ignorant as to not understand something as basic as that!?!?!? This jerk is an insult to the United States and everyone who ever put on a uniform to defend it.

After all that and this week he did start waring a flag pin ! But I like todays little “stunt” by this odious little PUNK ...where he claims President Bush is “picking on him” when he stated that some want negotiate with terrorist ...if the shoe fits ! But why does Obama complain about things he is proud of in other (not national) venues !

Alright, how many people actually know the words to the Stars Spangled Banner?
My guess would be 1 in 10, maybe less.
Test that at a gathering.
There always was a lot of controversy about the Stars Spangled Banner being the national anthem.
Many preferred America the Beautiful.
It is easier to sing, less high notes, and it praises the beauty of the country.
Had the Stars Spangled Banner not been chosen as the national anthem, it would have faded into obscurity long ago.
It is not very well written, it is awkward, and it is a dated war song.
Also, I was taught to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag with my hand over my heart, but to stand at attention for the National Anthem.
I was also taught that some prefer to have their hand over their heart but it is not mandatory.

It's NOT Criminal to refuse to do these things but it IS the PROPER thing to do..And the LEAST that one can be EXPECTED to do if one wishes to become the President of the United States and DOESN'T hold to the Premise that GOD DAMNS AMERICA...

Your Obama quote about the National Anthem attributed as coming from LTG Bill Ginn' USAF Ret. is complete and utter fiction.

Your lack of interest in bothering to fact check the lies you disseminate should embarrass you.

You and other republicans choosing to try and blind us with your drivel is a desperate attempt to prevent people from seeing how truly pathetic and uneducated you truly are.

For the record the quote was an attempt at humor by a Time magazine columnist and not from Obama.

Had you taken the time to fact check this yourself maybe you would have reconsidered propagating it further.

But then I doubt this to be the case, as you are not concerned with facts, just promoting your right wing agenda.

Do us all a favor, unplug your internet, go read the Constitution and quit following the herd.

You and others like are a plague on this great country and deserve to be deported to some isolated island where you can no longer spread your disease onto others.

Wow what a nice compliment Bob I am a veteran a voter and a citzen so what I express is my rightr if you dont like it go put your head in the sand till Obama dries up and blolws away.
$ of my sons served in the military also so thats another thing about me.
By the way my freind Obama was videoed as not putting his hand over his heart during the national anthem being played during the Iowa primary I suppose you didn;t see that!!
The disease you mention is what you dont like the truth Liberals cant stand it or any criticism too bad its here to stay you can go to a country of your choice try Russia or maybe Mexico there room there for you and YOUR KIND!!!!!

Concerned person who feels like expressing my opinion while I still can. I have been in Florida since 1973 when things were less hectic crime was not a problem. I enjoy writing to the editor,emailing to higher ups when things seem out of control like the current crime wave. I believe in free speech and it seems people are letting that slip away as they are told what to say at certain seasonal times. I think our media is our biggest threat using their liberal viewpoints and if wrong they are not responsible for errors I cant understand the Supreme's courts power we do not elect this group but we are at their mercy if you can call it that on issues that have an effect how we behave. People in power we dont electt that are backed by special interst groups or maybe some appointments are not acceptable to certain parties and therefore some well qualified individuals never get the appoiintment. The supreme court opens their sessions with a prayer and the ten commandments are on their very building. When will the media think before addressing dangerous things that are picked up by the media and sort of become a fad for copycats like the Campus massacares occurring senselessly. I have raised 5 sons and one daughetr 4 of my sons were in the military submariners. Enjoy this site lots of controversy and also informative!!
