Stuck in a hotel room with nothing else to do, I turned on the Sprint All-Star Race.  Instead of the familiar National Anthem, Damien Horne sang an American Idol version of  "God Bless' America". I don't know any old time NASCAR fan who believes that a race should kick off with anything other than a respectful rendition of the National Anthem.  While there is certainly nothing wrong with God Bless America, it almost seemed disrespectful to the two servicemen who announced "Start you engines".

This is just one more way NASCAR continues to show that it is willing to abandon the old fans to show that it is "diverse".  Good luck , Mr. France, and good bye.

Heck, the last NASCAR race I watched on Fox, the NASCAR racers made out with their wives, girlfriends or groupies on camera during the singing of the national anthem, so they might as well jettison it from the program. It seems the NASCAR crowd ain't quite as patriotic as it's cracked up to be. Funny how that sort of misbehavior doesn't make the headlines on here.

Sence 1999, the Nation anthem has been sang after the all star showdown, where two drivers and one van vote make the all star race by racing their way in. That is concidered a entertainment race. The All Star race, where drivers that have won from the previous year, past champs, and past winners of the All Star race, participate is the MAIN Event. After Driver introductions, like at every other track, the invocation is given (Which was done by Ned Jarrett) and then the National Anthem is preformed. Followed by the race car drivers (The All Star drivers) getting in their cars and then the "Gentlemen, Start Your Engines". After that, three pace laps ensue, where at the end of the three pace laps are down, the green flag is waved (Which means the race has begun) and then the race will end with a checkard flag waving. Thats usualy how a NASCAR race works mscsailor and sensiblejoe. Now maybe you will understand it.

Thanks for the information. Obviously I haven't been watching NASCAR races much in recent years--- and won't until Toyota is gone, fender bending is allowed again, cars have real 2 door bodies and no templates- no phony front wheel drive look alikes, restrictor plates are no more, fighting after a race doesn't get a trip to the trailer, peanuts are again taboo, all drivers have American names, green cars are not allowed, women are banned from the pit areas, Cale and Donnie are allowed to settle their differences once and for all, and Rockingham, North Wilkesboro and South Boston are back on the schedule.

I would say when toyota actually makes a car the size of the nascar version let them try to race...when they have a celica that actually comes (even optionally) with a v-8, but I still say that japanese need to keep there cars where they belong...drifting races.

I dont see why you need to play the national anthem at all at sporting events?

maybe just the finals.
