Even though there is an infinitismal number of worlds in the English language, a person of moderate education knows approx. 1% of those words and maybe as many as 5%.  An intelligent person understands far more and if they don't understand, they know they have the ability to discover not only the words but the meaning behind those words.

There are words that are synonyms: words having the same meaning as others and there are antonyms: words having an opposite meaning.

All sorts of words mean different things but may express the same thought or idea.  Having a grasp of the language gives the advantage of communication.  Having less of a grasp gives a disadvantage and leads to misunderstanding or an inability to grasp the meaning of a discussion.

Each of us has the responsibility of our own education.  We can improve ourselves and our language but only if we wish to.  If we are comfortable with our present level of education, we can stay in one place all our lives.  If we are dissatisfied, we can contunue to expand our minds.

How we talk to each other depends on our ability to understand the words we use and what they mean.

hehehehehehehehehe...... for some reason your post reminds me of the movie "Idiocracy". Which, in short, in about the dumbing down of our people to where all we have left are grunts and slang for communication. Anyone left who speaks intelligently is considered 'gay'.

It was a funny movie, but as social commentary it was kinda scary.

I enjoy using words. It's my grammar that needs a refresher course ;)

You know what really bugs me? People who tack "area" onto everything. Like this is my living room area. Area and room are synonyms so it's like saying this is my living room room. Or they say I'll borrow you some money. What happened to the word "loan"? Like I'll loan you the money.
This is what our education system is turning out...

I am in Sarasota and enjoy reading avidly, mostly about historical subjects and biographies. Also have travelled in England and Wales, visiting family and historical sights. I like a good conversation on nearly all subjects and, although I have opinions, am willing to listen to all sides of a topic. I believe in listening and learning so your opinions are always necessary to me.
