Only caught part of the story (WC break) but my question is this... were all decorations banned, or just Christian related ones?  We are coming into a holiday season celebrated by many civilizations... Chanukka, the ancient celebrations of good crops and getting ready for the new ones... just to mention a few.  The ancients celebrated the time with decorating trees, lighting candles, etc.  Jesus was not born in December but the new Christians took over the days of the ancient's celebrations to force them to celebrate his birth.

Holiday decorations are okay... reds and greens, lighted trees, family dinners, Santa Claus (who was originally a man who went about giving gifts to children at the hard time of the year... when times were tough)... but keep religion out of it.  It was not a religious holiday!

Here is a reference to the story that you are referring to. I was just reading the article myself. Damian.

I'm against any ban on any festive occasion. That includes restrictions. Party on!

Florida Gulf Coast University has further substantiated the fact that they intend to uphold their ban on Christmas ornamentation which are banned in all common areas, although a spokesperson has indicated that employees will be allowed to display Christmas ornaments on their desks. Damian.

The annual assault on Christian's and Christmas has begun! Why would anyone be offended? If there were a display for other holidays, I don't think I would be the slightest bit put off so why do these PC clowns think they are protecting everyone?

Damian, I read the full story this morning... Scrooge is alive and well, and living in Florida.

tangers... Being PC has gone overboard, but then there are some Christians who totally ignore the other religions. Take our annual xmas party at work... one guy always gives a prayer over the luncheon... mentioning Jesus. There are several people NOT of the Christian faith at the luncheon. He has been told this several times.

As I said before, this has been a season of celebration long before the christians arrived and took it over. Oh, BTW, I was brought up christian, and as a young child, objected to the christians taking over the season and ignoring the others. My great uncle, on my mother's side, was a monsigneuor who taught me the history of religions and holidays. Stranger yet... his one brother married a jewish woman, my mother married a Lutheran, and I married a jewish man.

everyone... have a happy Thanksgiving. Thank goodness the christians have not taken over this holiday... a holiday to celebrate the early pilgrims, of several religions, who came to this country to escape religious edicts.

BTW... I am not anti-christian, or any religion. I am anti-being forced to believe/practice their "way".

Charli; I'm not saying that I agree with the ban, just that the ban is being upheld, according to a FGCU spokesperson. I'm not a scrooge at all! What's up with that?! Damian.

damian... not calling you a scrooge... I meant the Dean. Seems he relented.

Enjoy your turkey! Love the weather. You can take the girl out of Ohio, but you can't take Ohio out of the girl... and I've lived here since '62!

Once again, I'm w/Vittorio.

I remember when I was small, my town square featured a Tree, a Manager, a Menorah & a Star of David. Along w/lights & candy canes and garland. All together and all beautiful.

Instead of taking away, why not add symbols of now-popular faiths?

I can't stand PC thinking when it goes too far.

moon... I agree with you... to a point. First off, xmas stuff should not appear until after Santa shows up at the end of the Macy's parade! But... Christian decorations, or any religious decorations for that matter, should not be put up at government sites without putting up decorations for everyone. Seems the Christian decorations always win out. I remember a case where the Jewish holiday came before the Christian holiday (stolen from the ancients... which no one has addressed...) The decorations were taken down when some Christians complained... but the Christian Christmas decorations were put up and not removed when the Jewish community complained!

I don't know. I don't mind Christmas showing up this weekend. But I detest Christmas music in August!

Imagine how much more festive places would look if everyone's religion was included and no one complained?

Again, my hometown town square was so pretty back in the 70's. I'd hate to think it had been wiped clean by complainers.

It's silly, but I've always wanted to see a picture from the Space Shuttle or ISS of the world Christmas Eve. I've wondered if they could get a close enough shot to show all the beautiful lights? It would have to be so cheery to see.

All religious icons should be included. We could even have a 'blank' space for Atheists.

Inclusion instead of exclusion. We'd all be better off. Tho, guaranteed there would still be some whiner complaining cuz some people just aren't happy unless others are miserable.

When did we change to the needs of the one dictate to the needs of the many? Heck, even the Grinch's heart grew three sizes that day ;)

Moon Owl; if a Blank Spot is reserved for the Atheists; then there would need to be an area reserved for the Agnostics in order to display a large Question Mark Icon for them! This of course would still exclude the Antitheists, who could be represented perhaps with a large empty hole!? Damian.

Furthermore, the Atheists and the Antitheists can subsequently assess the similarities and differences between the Blank Spot and the Empty Hole, and discuss the implications of it all with the Agnostic who would no doubt simultaneously agree and disagree with both of the others, and proclaim that his/her assigned Question Mark is not the optimal font, but will suffice until further notice! Damian.

Addendum; the previous two comments were left with an element of sardonic cynicism, and not intended as a personal attack upon any Atheists, Antitheists, or Agnostics. I personally contend that any and all Atheists, Antitheists, and Agnostics are entitled to their level of belief, disbelief, the combination thereof, and the subsequent confusion and cognitive dissonance which no doubt ensues! Damian!
