We have all used this system in our lives.... Since the Electoral College has made a mess of our voting system... Here is what I propose...  talk about "popular vote"....

A person runs for the prez position... no veep candidate.  The person who gets the most votes is the Prez, second place becomes the Veep...  even if from a different "party".

Actually, that is what used to happen. The system was changed because of political parties. When the President and the VP were elected from different parties they clashed on everything and it turned out to be so counterproductive that we now elect both President and VP on the same ticket.

I don't usually double post, but I think I should also add that according to the 12th Ammendment, the President and VP are only required to be elected separately. So technically we could still have a President and VP from opposing parties. But that never happens since the electoral college delegates vote for both President and VP (two separate votes) and the electoral college delegates almost always vote down party lines (some states actually require it).

charli,

Maybe we don't have the best system around, but I wonder if its failures are primarily due to an inability to audit votes more than they are a product of the "system." I would be much more comfortable with the current system if I knew that my vote was actually being counted.

Couldn't I at least get some kind of receipt that lets me validate that my vote was counted? You can check your lotto numbers online and at the grocery store, but there is no way to know that your vote was ever really counted.

Franken... excellent idea. When Phyllis becomes the new super of elections, I'll suggest it. (I've known her for years... outside of work... before I even started working for the county. I think she will like the idea.)

The electoral college is to insure that smaller states still have a voice. Popular vote is what a true democracy would probably do, but we are a Representative Republic.

As for the vote, I think that people should have to pass a simple civics test- name the president, v.p., how many states, state governor, etc., and then be eligible to vote. Hopefully those who can answer that kind of question would not vote for someone because they were "cuter" or because "my dad told me he was better."

hernando... the Electoral College has caused many problems in the past. I can cite one case, in its beginning, can not remember the Prez at the time (old farts disease) but one guy promised someone, that if he cast his Electoral College vote for the guy, that he would be "awarded" a post. The man did, the guy one, and the Electoral College man? Did not get the "post". If memory serves me, the Prez did not do a good job and was not re-elected for a second term.

I like your idea about a civics test. I also think that all voters should take a test prior to voting, using your criteria... "Why would you vote for so and so?" "Because he/she is Black?", "Because the canditate is a woman?"... "Because the canditate is qualified?"
