I agree that there are some problems with the rural bus routes, but the one mom on the hoity toity Harbor Island... Drive your kids to the bus stop, or to school.  Why make us tax payers pay additional money for the job you do not seem to want to do... be a good parent!  If you do not like the system, take the care of your child into your own hands... do not make the rest of us do it.

When I was in 1st to 5th grade I had to walk to school, up hill, in the snow.  I lived a mile or so from the school.  When I was 11 or so I moved to a very rural area and, literally, had to walk up hill, both ways, to catch the school bus.  When I was a young teen, we moved to Miami Beach... I had to walk to the junior high through the neighborhood.  For high school I had to take the public bus... we were inside the "school bus limit" but too far to walk to school.  THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SEXUAL PREDATORS!

Again, I say... do not blame others for what you should be doing!

Good post, charli!

"Why make us tax payers pay additional money for the job you do not seem to want to do... be a good parent!"

That would include making sure that your kids eat breakfast and NOT rely on the schools, vis-a-vis taxpayers, to do it for you.

We live 1.5 miles from the school. We are not allowed the luxury of bus service...So I drop her off every morning, I take her on my scooter, she enjoys starting her day that way. After she has a good breakfast of course. The bummer part is it takes an hour to pick her up.
So do I feel sorry for anyone with no bus service NO.

I live on a rural like street with people who speed like it is Nascar. The majority of the school are walkers, but being tht I live on the opposite side of 19, we qualify for buses. Regardless, I am still at that bus stop every morning that I don't have to go to work early, and on those days my eldest is there. As for predators, yep they are every where and were around when I was a kid, and walked every year until I got my first car. I just got 4 post letting me know that 4 more have moved into my neighborhood. Yippee.... :)

My kid takes the bus as it is too far to walk. But I do feed her breakfast before she gets on the bus.

I see this as part of a greater problem. Today parents coddle children way to much, you cannot expect to raise a child that is prepared and ready for "The Real World" by hiding them from it and doing everything for them. I believe that we are to easy on kids today, the attire, cell phones, computers, slang etc. to sum it up kids today are spoiled, lazy and have it way to easy.

Guys... thanks for all your posts. I am glad to see that good parents still exist. I am tired of "footing the bill" for irresponsible parents...We are into the 3rd generation of kids since I was a kid... these kids are spoiled or neglected. I go with "negected" as parents seem, for the most part, seem to only care about themselves, the next cell phone call, etc., even while driving the young ones to school, after school activies, etc. They do not seem to really care about what their children are doing.

louie... you are a "rarity" in today's world... a parent who cares. Keep up the good work.

codrus... I feel that it is not that parents coddle their... I feel that the kids are just another job that parents have to do... that gets in the way of their lives. "My parents want to be grandparents so I'll have a kid... but I still have to keep in touch with my friends.... I will let my parents, the school system, etc. take care of the kid... as long as I do not have to change my schedule."

I am an Environmental Specialist with Hills. Cty. Basically, I am a "dumpster diver". I also do a lot of educational graphics design about the proper disposal of household chemical & electronics, litter, etc. My hobbies are very diverse... golf and reading, with sci-fi, forensic mysteries, and history being my favorites. My other passion is photography, mostly nature. Ever since experiencing my first hurricane in Florida, Cleo in 1964 when I was 15, when the eye went over my house, I have been fascinated with weather. I have a 99% accuracy... including predicting Charley's turn away from Tampa the night before he hit down south.
