Thursday, November 13, 2008 What a spectacular evening THE LATIN GRAMMY GALA ...
It was breathtaking to see so many latinos and Americans come together in this wondefully elegant evening of awards of latin pops, country and folklore music. It brought me to tears to see VICKI CARR.........OMG........my mother adore her music and she is still STANDING and SINGING with her beautiful voice. Kenny G. was also there. My God that man can hypnotized you with his flute.
The best part was to see so many like I've said, Colombia; Brazil, PuertoRico, Cuba, Argentina, Pananama and America..........united under one roof.
Gloria Stefan was absolutely incredible. HER MUSIC SINCE THE EARLY 70's with the Miami Sound Machine still kicking.
But the greatest part of all.................was to see Gloria Estefan along with JOSE FELICIANO (GOSH he looked incredible) and MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SANTANA.........was simply an emotional time. The music; the lyrics just makes your heart pound and your feet moving to the beat COME EVERYBODY DO THE CONGA......
What a spectacular and elegant evening. I truly enjoyed every bit of it. Especially my husband who adores Santana.
Though this picture was from his concert this year, April, 2008 UCF ARENA.
LOVING THE MUSIC. I LOVE THE TRIBUTE GIVING TO CELIA CRUZ, SELENA AND TITO PUENTE..............ONE OF LATINO AMERICA GREATEST only to name a few!

As you probably know by now... I love music! So when I get the opportunity to hang out with someone who's a giant in the business... I eat it up!!! Got to hang out with Thomas McClary the other day. He's one of the founder's of The Commodores and co-wrote one of the greatest funk songs ever recorded: "Brickhouse." Never realized it before but he's a Central Florida native and still lives here today. Check out his website with this link... and check out the photos below!

Did anyone see Dolly in concert last weekend at UCF? She was fantastic!
I've been dying to see her for years, I missed the opportunity when I lived in Knoxville (though I've been to Dollywood more times than I can count).
I've always enjoyed her music especially when driving through her hometown of Pigeon Forge or through the Smoky Mountains.
Since I'm still on a Dolly high...give me your favorite Dolly song.
Mine right now: I'm Gone from Halos and Horns

It has now been a little over two years when a group of UCF students decided to become leaders in their community and become a voice for the voiceless, with music as their weapon. Rock for Hunger is a nonprofit organization started by College students from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL. It all began with the first annual festival, which was a student project of which the goal was getting college students active in their community. Now two years later, here we are with Rock for Hunger being a fully volunteer run nonprofit and obtained our 501(c)3 status earlier this year. Rock for Hunger now has programs to help provide meals, clothing, resume building assistance, and more for the homeless and poverty stricken individuals. Along with this program, we also have volunteer opportunities that assist a community after school program in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Orlando focusing on K-2 kids. The goal of the after school program is to strengthen math and literacy skills for children living in poverty and homelessness, and providing them with a positive learning environment geared for success.

I was listening to a cd I made and a flood of memories came over me like ocean waves. Have you ever had that happen? These were memories of nostalgia and a little sadness.
The song that got me the most was 'The Flame' by Cheap Trick. It reminded me of someone I cared for a lot and will never see again. He will always be in my heart.
The other was 'Friends in Low Places' by Garth Brooks. A bunch of friends and I would play that song all the time when we were in college.
Where did the time go?
Do you have songs that do that to you? Which ones?
Now I'm depressed.

Just went to see "Toxic Audio" this past weekend. They are amazing! For those that have never been to one of their shows...they do everything with sound effects from each other. There is no band or instruments, the entire show is done with sound effects. Very cool & different, & they were very funny too. I hear they are coming back in December to Sanford. Hope you can check them out.

This is a day for tears for all Floyd Heads like me. A great loss to musicians today when the announcement was made of Rick's passing! It has not yet been said what form of cancer it was that took this great artist away from us.
Rick Wright, founder of Pink Floyd was a great self-taught keyboard player appeared on the group's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside lead guitarist Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason. One of the BEST musicians, song writters, performer and entertainer that is already a big part of history and live on through all who has appreciated a great man! Rest in Peace My Brother!
I have been a Floyd fan since I was 10 years of age which would have made me a fan since the first album released! So what if I'm old...I know it and still ROCK ON with the best of them! I will always be one of their biggest fans till the day I pass on! So what can I say....I'm a proud FLOYD HEAD!!!
Please give a moment of silence for a great musician......................
MAY HE CONTINUE TO PLAY ON FOR THE ANGEL'S IN HEAVEN!

Last Friday, I went to the Barn in Sanford, where Jim Van Fleet plays a lot, to see Country/Rap artist, Cowboy Troy. Because of Fay, only 150-200 people showed up. Cowboy Troy was the coolest country act I have ever seen. He showed up early and signed autographs, took pictures, and talked to everyone who came to the show. He was happy that we were there. As his set started, he said he would buy the next 100 beers for everyone and if anyone needed a ride home, he would pay for the cab. That was cool. His music was great and I am still recovering from it. His songs include the famous "I played Chicken With a Train", "Hick Chick", and "If you don't wanna love me" He brought his own band, named Coaltrain, who also was awesome, and Cowboy Troy spent two hours on stage singing his songs, getting the crowd going, and then singing some other hits from Areosmith to Justin Timberlake. It was good stuff. I first heard him on Big & Rich's first album and then at Daytona, Cowboy Troy was doing a thing with Chevy at the tent. He is what country music is about. Trust me, this guy is great. As we were leaving, He shook my brother-in-laws hand, who was at his first concert, then shook my hand and told us he hopes to see us again, then he hugged my fiancee told her that her man is very lucky to have someone as beautiful as her. Then he waved good-bye. Please everyone, buy one song on iTunes for this guy. He is what is needed in the music profession. Let him know you respect his mixture of country, rap, and rock. It's great. check it out with an open mind and listen to it a few times. You'll like it!

I was driving to the beach the other day, and I pulled out an older U-2 cd, one of their greatest hits collections. Unbelievably excellent music in my opinion. I think their lyrics are brilliant separate from the music, and the music is awesome without the words. Together, you have some of the best rock songs in modern times.
Where do you rank U-2 on your list of favorite rock bands? Which are your favorite groups? Blog 'em here.

When I think about it, and listen to radio, or watch music on television, there really isn't that much QUALITY stuff out there. I find I mostly tolerate what I hear, hoping something better comes on, or constantly changing the channel or station looking for some QUALITY. It is few and far between, and in the meantime, we have been conditioned to settle for CRAP.

No need to check your calendar, it's is 2008.
Both artists have out new cd's .
While these ladies aren't cranking out the same kind of music they are famous for from back in the 80's, both cd's aren't bad.
Madonna's Hard Candy is danceable but she's all marketing, I feel she's lost the soul of her music. Cyndi Lauper's Bring Ya to the Brink helps her remain true to her underground roots. My fav's from Lauper's cd: Into the Nightlife, High and Mighty.
I'm just so happy Lauper has a new cd! It makes me want to break out my bangle bracelets and dye my hair bright red and orange.
Which artist is better and why? That's what I'd like to hear from you.

O.K. fellow rockers check out the article below and then answer this question for me: Do you really care at this point if Axl Rose brings his latest version (whatever it is) of Guns 'N Roses back? Personally... I'm sick of the drama at this point. I say... just go away Axl! GNR was great back in the day. Let's keep the good memories and not make any new... bad ones with another weak comeback attempt that will undoubtedly flounder when you go off the tracks... again.

NEW YORK (AP) - Guns N' Roses are finally releasing a single and you've got to get Rock Band 2 to hear it. MTV has announced that Rock Band 2 will include the Guns N' Roses song "Shackler's Revenge" from the "Chinese Democracy" album. Axl Rose has been working on that album for 14 years. Rock Band 2 will come out for XBox in September and for other game platforms later in the year.

The week-end musician fills an important void in the music business. Those are the folks that play the weddings, parties, etc. that might otherwise not be able to afford the higher cost of full-time union musicians/bands.
The other day I was talking to some of those musicians who perform around Central Florida and was told that they are not accepting bookings unless they pay considerably more in order to cover the high price of gasoline for travel that may be as much as two or three hours round trip. I was told that some of them have actually lost money playing their last couple of engagements due to the high price of gas.
Few people seem to give much thought about what a disappearance of the week-end musician would mean to our society.
Do you think that their disappearance would have a noticeable impact?

I recently read an article that quoted a study that concluded 9 out of 10 people can carry a tune. They based this on singing the song HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and 90 percent did pretty good. Then it went on to talk about the 10 percent who can't sing, and they are divided into two groups essentially. The first group are people who KNOW they sound bad when singing, and the second group are people who THINK they sound GOOD.
As a musician, I have ran into all three groups. As a choir director, it has been difficult to pull people into it. It has always amazed me how many people think they CAN'T sing, when they actually CAN.
If someone CAN'T sing, but they THINK they CAN? I have no problem bursting their bubble. Somebody has to do it.
So Can YOU sing? Seriously? How good are you? Good enough to sing a solo at my church next Sunday?
Incidentally, I CAN sing, not as good as I would like, but not horrible either.
If you think you CAN or if you think you CAN'T sing, why not try recording yourself singing Happy Birthday, then play it back and LISTEN. You might be surprised at how good you sound. On the other hand, you might never sing again.

Last night my daughter and a friend had gone to the store and needed a ride home. As I went to pick them up I listened to the radio. Apparently, Pearl Jam is now using their concerts to campaign for Obama. This just sickens me. I love music. I wish musicians would stay out of politics. Do they not realize that they loose fans that way?
After Dave Mustaine (yes, I'm old) decided to cover the DNC for MTV I've had a hard time enjoying Megadeth. They were always one of my favorite bands. On the other hand, when asked about politics Gene Simmons (no doubt in my mind a Democrat) told the reporter that Kiss is a rock band and refused to answer. I have a whole new respect for him. Yes, I know that most musicians are liberals. I really don't care. I don't need it confirmed. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part musicians know as much about politics as I do about football. I wish they'd just stick to what they are good at and what they know best.
