PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk

POSTED: 2:21 pm EDT September 23, 2008 UPDATED: 10:28 pm EDT September 23, 2008

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.

PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

In a statement Ben and Jerry's said, "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child."

---------------------------

Am I missing something here?  I didn't grow up on a farm.. but I'm just guessing if you don't milk a dairy cow.. that cow is going to be miserable!

Are dairy cows suffering?

And don't even get me started on eating ice cream made with breast milk.

Kudos to Ben and Jerry.. I would never eat ice cream again if it had human milk in it.
Can you just see all those women lined up at the pump getting milked. How humane is that, thousands of women trying to get milked and get home to their babies..
Right, those cows will have to be milked no matter what.
I bet the captain will have a good laugh at this one.lol

ONLY Ben and Jerry (liberal hippy founders) would even consider it! Whats next? Breast milk in vending machines?

You would at least think PETA would be talking about soy instead.... what a crackpot leap.

Hey! Maybe a new product at Starbucks!

I'll have a non-fat mother's milk Americana with open range fed human milk...

Well I don't know about everybody else, but ANY baby with a lick of sense is sure to love it! I'll bet the "LeLeche League" thinks it's a WONDERFUL idea! Although I'm NO FAN of PETA, I highly advocate breast feeding, using breast milk mixed with cereal and baby food, and even making puddings FOR BABIES, using breast milk. I don't know that I would personally eat it; I think my conscience would be telling me: "You're stealing some poor baby's food for your own pleasure!" I think I'll stick to my own homemade ice cream & frozen yogurt, and continue to visit "Rodeo Whip" and "Baskin Robins" on occasion!

Is this an attempt to equate "lactating" mothers with dairy cows?

This subject is disgusting and ridiculous.
What are they thinking? Hook up human females to a
milking machine like they use on the dairy farms?

A Truly Titillating Topic! . . . . . Actually, it IS ridiculous. If I had just heard it here, I may have thought it was a joke or a “teaser” topic. But I heard this on CH 9 this morning (the more formal news channel in O-Town IMO) and they were as serious as an IRS audit.

I’m not opposed to saving the CrossEyed Warbler and Pink TitallyPoof and all, but this just proves that the PETA people are extremists who must have “accidentally” caught their Hemp clothing on fire. Aside from the fact that no one would buy the ice cream, how would they ensure it’s safety? They’d have to strictly control the diets of these women, check for diseases/illnesses, etc. So basically, they’d have to raise and keep women for milking – like cows.

Someone needs to tell PETA that the 60’s ended nearly 4 decades ago and to turn in their acid.

What if the breat milkees are crack w*h*o*r*e*s? Or on some other drug. That would put a whole new kick in being addicted to ice cream. Not to mention the withdrawls.
I guess if you can fry ice cream, you can smoke it too.

Have some dipstick from PETA give thier own milk, then have them try the ice cream with their own milk in it.
