"You know, so this idea that he’s (Sen. Barack Obama) an elitist – so she’s an elitist, we are elitists. We are. We feel like we know what’s best for the country – just like the Republicans. We’re all elitists, because the people we’re listening to, those are not the real people of the world."    -- Whoopi Goldberg

---------------------------

Found this quote online today and thought it was interesting.  People often think of Republicans as being elitists.  Could the same be said for Democrats in the context Whoopi describes?

What are your thoughts?

(*by the way.. here's the definition of elitism - The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources. )

Reading from the context, Whoopi Goldberg seems to be using the word "elitist" to mean "someone who feels he/she knows what's best for the country," to use her own words. That's a far cry from the dictionary definition you've posted: "belief that certain people, social classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of perceived superiority" -- which has been a major plank of the Republican platform these past seven-plus years. The Democrats feel they know what's best for the country; the Republican have shown they're more interested in what's best for the thin upper crust of the country, the rest of average Americans be damned. Therein lies the difference between the two.

He is not only an elitist as can be exemplified by his lack of regard for the working class as "bitter, gun toting, church goers" (I am paraphrasing here) but is also an overt racist.

Unfortunately becuase of the color of his skin, he can get away with it. I find his comments and behavior as disgusting and ignorant as I find those of the Klan. The only difference, one is college educated and wears a tie

Whoopi Goldberg is absolutely correct in this instance. The only difference between Democrat elites and Republican elites is that with Republicans we have a slower road to Communism. I'm not intensely fond of either, but, I'll vote for whoever is going to "let" me keep more of what I have earned.

Whoopi is partly correct, most politicians are elitist's, most have never had to work two jobs to feed their family, or gone hungry so their kids would be full, or had to go to the store with coins to buy groceries. Lets face it democrat or republican most of these people have never held a real job. Could you imagine Ted Kennedy as a bus driver...well that wouldnt be a good thing, knowing his driving record, or maybe one of them as a company accountant, cant do that cause you cant spend more than you have or the business would go under.

This goes to the old debate like who can best help an alcoholic.. another alcoholic? or someone who has studied it?

It is impossible to be all things to all people much less come from them all. What needs to be understood is they are not supposed to be "leaders" as much as just "representatives" of the people! The power of the vote has been shown in the last year when Washington was rocked back on its heels over the Amnesty aspect of an immigration plan! Washington was SHOCKED at how many people were paying attention!

The old days of people getting elected and then setting the alarm clock to go off and wake America up out of a slumber for 2,4, or 6 years are over. Politics and National issues are ongoing daily. Anytime I hear people say they are tired of the election process or can't wait for it to be over, I tell them they have a responsibility to pay attention all the time!

Simply: When you look all the way down the line at whos at fault for the issues that you like or don't like... the VOTER is to blame!

"We’re all elitists, because the people we’re listening to, those are not the real people of the world." -- Whoopi Goldberg"

Somehow, the whoopi fans and assorted liberals just brush off the last part of the quote. Whoopi, et al, do not consider the hard working, paycheck earning, everyday conservatives as the "real" people. Therein is the rub. Unless you are a liberal (preferably the limosine type) or a welfare mom, you can't be one of the "real" people.

Notions of separatism...
The only thing wrong with being a conformist is you cannot change the system from within.

Change comes from outside of the box.
It must be a unified change though.
Seperation of the 2 parties makes unification impossible.

Gorilla says -"Seperation of the 2 parties makes unification impossible."

There is little difference between the two major parties. They spend all their time and energy around election time running towards the sacred "middle". Witness Hillary drinking with the "boys". She is so far removed from that crowd it is laughable. McCain's run to embrace and compromise with democrats on every issue is little better. If (big if) a viable 3rd or 4th major party were to arise, then you might see things start to get done.
