Obama's lead over Clinton narrows: McCain Edges out Both

Wed Mar 19, 2008 11:07am EDT

By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama's big national lead over Hillary Clinton has all but evaporated in the U.S. presidential race, and both Democrats trail Republican John McCain, according a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

The poll showed Obama had only a statistically insignificant lead of 47 percent to 44 percent over Clinton, down sharply from a 14 point edge he held over her in February when he was riding the tide of 10 straight victories.

Illinois Sen. Obama, who would be America's first black president, has been buffeted by attacks in recent weeks from New York Sen. Clinton over his fitness to serve as commander-in-chief and by a tempest over racially charged sermons given by his Chicago preacher.

The poll showed Arizona Sen. McCain, who has clinched the Republican presidential nomination, is benefiting from the lengthy campaign battle between Obama and Clinton, who are now battling to win Pennsylvania on April 22.

McCain leads 46 percent to 40 percent in a hypothetical matchup against Obama in the November presidential election, according to the poll.

That is a sharp turnaround from the Reuters/Zogby poll from last month, which showed in a head-to-head matchup that Obama would beat McCain 47 percent to 40 percent.

"The last couple of weeks have taken a toll on Obama and in a general election match-up, on both Democrats," said pollster John Zogby.

Matched up against Clinton, McCain leads 48 percent to 40 percent, narrower than his 50 to 38 percent advantage over her in February.

"It's not surprising to me that McCain's on top because there is disarray and confusion on the Democratic side," Zogby said

Among independents, McCain led for the first time in the poll, 46 percent to 36 percent over Obama.

He was behind McCain by 21 percent among white voters.

The March 13-14 poll surveyed 525 likely Democratic primary voters for the matchup between Clinton and Obama. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

For the matchup between McCain and his Democratic rivals, 1004 likely voters were surveyed. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.

-------------------------

As you know.. these polls will change a hundred times or more before election day in November.  But I'm curious to hear your thoughts thus far.

Why do you think McCain beats both Democratic candidates right now?  Once a Democratic nominee is tapped.. will that make a big difference?

Darn it hun , I was so looking forward to the shocked look on Democrats faces when they lose an un-losable race. You just no fun! Yes its a “train wreck” but it is also unavoidable so I am making popcorn and getting a nice chair to watch it from!

OK one real thought , I am deeply concerned that the DNC and this fight is going to weaken the Democratic party so much that it may never recover (a house divided in a dangerousness world) this could leave us just one terrorist attack away from a One party system ! Even I do not want this...and my views are a bit to the right of Rush and Ann

I've been saying for over a year now that Republicans will win this race in a McGovern style landslide. Democrats have (to borrow their phrase) failed miserably to meet the promises they made last election, and Obama who was literally running on the same platform (as if people would fall for it twice in a row) is now shattered. Hillary never stood a chance in anyones mind but her own.

The REAL election fight is on the Hill! Its time to send Mr. "we lost" Harry Reid, and Ms. Speaker and top obstructionist to intelligence collection and defense of the nation Pelosi packing!

With the way the Democrums are always fighting and bickering between each other and then turns on voters because it wasn't their way shows the true color of what kind of politician they truly are so this doesn't surprise me in the least! And they wonder why Republicians has taken the head for all these past years! (DEMO's, here's your sign)

I must say that I am grateful that they started their campaigning so early because it gave plenty of time to show what they are really all about...the lies caught up with them both! Battling between each other for so long gave everyone a chance to see just what they are made of and what they are willing to do for more of that power and greed and how they twist around from side to side to get what they want!

Don't get me wrong Rotty...I hate McCain ! If I had any other choice I would use it, I even considered voting for Hillary as a way of showing my party the error of there ways and would have fallowed threw with that threat if not for her stand on Iraq/Cuba/Venezuela and her history of selling us up the river to China ! I am going to vote for McCain but only because we have a chance of fixing his idiotic (and liberal) ideas in 8 or 10 years while the slide in the world and world market under Obama or Hillary may never be reversed/repaired......
At the end of the day McCain is regrettable but survivable the other two are not.

This is a very cool poll. With the Democratic nominee not yet set, both are in close striking distance to McCain. I think these numbers are in favor of a close contest, and a close contest in most circumstances, especially this one, does not play well for the incumbent, President McSame.

So you (zoe) are saying you will kiss Hillary's butt if she beats Obama with the super delegates ? That would indicate that you actually see no difference in the two of them as far as policy and are voting as most democrats based on your strong feelings about Race-V-Sex....
Sorry to bust your bubble about historical president but the divided party always loses in this kind of race ...or are you two young to remember Bill Clinton ?

amyk -
[1] I think McCain is leading both democratic nominees because the others aren't set. McCain has become the choice of his party and that plays a role in hypothetical polls. The narrow margin doesn't play well for the incumbent party.
[2] I think there will be a big difference in the readings after the Democratic nominee is selected. Currently the DNC folks can't give their endorsement or back either candidate. Other leaders of the Democratic party haven't spoken out about their support for their nominee because the battle isn't over. Lastly, the losing candidates haven't given their endorsement speeches, like Huckabee, Romney, and Giuliani has.

I would vote for whoever Obama chooses to give his blessings to. I trust his judgement.

I am sorry did you say judgment or Blackness ??? Not one of you who support Obama have ever sated a single issue under witch his “direction” will improve our circumstance.....and the default is to look at how his ideas have worked in the past , yup sure enough losing a war is always a bad idea and higher taxes always hurt the economy ! Question is would YOU fallow the policy being sold by Obama if he was white man????????

This has to be one of America's saddest election year...with no real presidential candidates in the ballot to begin with..it is pretty darn scary. However, I who has been a registered democrat for as long as I remembered cannot imagine NOR DO I WANT A DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT...as I of the opinion that this could only HURT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA as we know it. Also, the mere fact that the democratic party HAS BEEN SO BUSY in advertising garbage rather than addressing real issues......IT'S A GOOD TIME TO BE A REPUBLICAN......and as we all know there are issues regarding McCain...WE HAVE NO CHOICE IN THIS MATTER but to suck it up and GIVE McCAIN THE SUPPORT THAT HE NEEDS TO OVERCOME the democratic party...VIVA THE REPUBLICANS....we truly CAN AND WILL MAKE THE CHANGE AND DO WHAT'S NECESSARY TO PROTECT OUR BELOVED AMERICA.....YES, I AM A HAPPY PERSON...today

With the possibility of another fiasco like we had in the last general election, it brings to question the reason for polls. Why not just be open and honest and let those in power decide who will be the next president?

The whole "show" is starting to remind me a bit of professional wrestling.

Hillary is just a bitter old woman who has been in the shadows of Bill to long and just cant face the fact that the only other person, how unqualified he is, is better than her. Just what are her qualifications anyway? I myself have never heard of her in any political arena (besides being first lady(?)) until she became a NewYork senator. What has she done for NewYork or our country since? I havent heard of anything.

excellent questions ericjhach.......i am still figuring that one out..and I AM OF THE OPINION SHE ONLY WAS VOTED IN BECAUSE SHE MOVED INTO THIS RITZY TOWN.....WITH ALL THE RICH AND NOT SO FAMOUS....SO I GUESS WOW..FIRST LADY in our backyard.....and that's what created "the Senator" position..........

Candy, you must also take into account that she and the fool she lives with have a $10,000 per month mortgage that the government pays in rent for the secret service to live on the property. One step further, we, the people of this country are paying for them to live and own that home free and clear. Wouldn't it be nice if the government paid your mortgage?
