As a Black man, I struggle with this issue.  It would be soo good for a Black man to get into the White House. This will be something that my grandfather would of loved to see had he lived.  My father tells me, come on son! This will be history.  Be a part of it! It took since the birth of this nation for a Black man to get REALLY close to the Presidency. Just imagine if the slaves could see this day. All those who fought for Civil Rights both Black and White. Those who died so that we Blacks can vote! This will be a GREAT day for us.

But I still cant vote for Obama.  This has nothing to do with his pastor or his affiliation with William Ayers, or what his wife has said or the fact that he attended the Million Man March ( on a side note. The Million Man March wasnt a negative march.  It was a march dedicated to the Black Man educating him on the problems in our community ie the high crime rate, the high dropout rate( why there are more Black men in jail than in college), why there are no fathers in the Black home and the high drug rate.)

I wouldnt vote for Obama because too me he is too liberal. I dont agree with universal healthcare. I have seen how it worked in England and they have to pay a LOT for it to work.  Obama says that he will roll back the Bush tax cuts in order to pay for health care.  That MAY work for a while but how will we pay for it in the future.  England had an idea.  They raised taxes!! Also, California has voted to overturn the ban on gay marriage in its state. Since Obama is very liberal, he may convince the US Congress to try to legalize gay marriage in our country.

I didnt like the war in Iraq. I thought that we went into the wrong country but now that we are there, we shouldnt pull out. If we do, the terrorists will use Iraq as a safe haven. By the way, What happened with trying to capture Bin Ladin?

Sorry Obama, but I dont know you that well my brother! I dont agree with most of your liberal views.  I admire that  you are trying for the White House. I admire your education qualities but on your stance on some issues, i dont know.  Where do you stand on the border control?  Where do you stand on social security?  How would you handle the war on Drugs?

I will probably vote for John McCain but the fact that in the past he voted against the King Holiday kind of turned me off.  However if he picks Mike Huckabee as his VP, that will definitely have me sold.

Just to give you some more information on the universal healthcare in England. Way back in 1995 my mother in law went to England as a tourist.. Well in the subway she fell and not only broke her hand but also had a huge gash in her cheek. Well not only did the hospital treat her and by her own words.. she was treated better in England than in any US hospital they even gave her pain meds and she even offered to pay she said "let me give you my address back in the US" they told her NO its taken care of... So if this is a example of how universal healthcare works..Bring it on..Im ready for it... Because there isnt a hospital in the US that I havent waited for 4-6 hrs to be treated. As far as Iraqis concerned we should leave NOW!!! we entered the war for the wrong reasons soldiers are dying for the wrong reasons.. Heck even George W doesnt know why we are there anymore

Sure! First of all Obama, Hillary and all the pundants of more general fund money aka socialized medicine, will NOT allow you to protect yourself legally in the event that you are treated wrong, harmed further, or killed by someone in the practice of socialized medicine.

Go ask some of the folks that have been living in the socialized medicine world in this country.. the military about conditions and stories of the system. I won't even begin because I won't be able to stop!

Agreements between governments on their citizens wealfare are already in place and likely your Mother-in-law needed not do anything because the Embassy already had a system in place and those doctors know how to get their money.

That 4 to 6 hour wait in this country exists for several reasons, one doctors are NEVER going to be rushed while Tort lawyers sit back with the court system pointed at their heads looking for just the smallest of mistakes. The days of life threatening injuries and illness have changed, and people are actually being treated and admitted more for things that just 20 years ago they would have died from!

Iraq again? Wrong reasons? YOUR leaders debated it TWICE and voted for, and continue to vote for it! It was the end of a cease fire and NOT a new issue! We would be done already had liberals had a spine and took action during the 90s! You should be hanging your head in shameful embarrassment for sending our troops into a mess we let fester for 8 years first!!

afelton.. you do have another choice on the Republican side now with Barr. A Libertarian and civil rights advocate, but good stance on fair tax, defense, and his argument on the border fence makes sense. McCain completely lost me when he climbed into bed with enviromentalist hell bent on destroying this nation in the name of some hippy crazed nature stance! Global Warming continues to die away as more and more evidence bubbles to the top and everyone from NASA to NOAA have to concede they fudged numbers and data to fit an agenda.

I am NOT a single issue voter, and since we are already fighting the war on terror (FINALLY after they have waged war on us for over a decade already!) If Democrats really were going to stop the war, they have had 2 years to do it! Obama isn't pulling troops out of ANYTHING for fear the next attack will end up hung around his neck!

@KISSHANK (and others),

Let me be first to tell ya. Yeah, yeah, yeah socialised medication is great for tourists, because when they get injured/hurt they don't have to pay! (its that way for illegals too).

But for the people who live in England, it was a pain in the arse - taxes were so high due to the healthcare programme. We do not realise how fortunate we are to have a privatised health insurance - sure!, there are ALOT of fixes it needs. But by no means should we have it be socialised.

Give me a break with your I like the idea of having a black president. Blacks are for blacks and this can painfully be seen if you are ever unfortunate enough to go to jail, whitebread.

well sabaii. whites have been for whites for a long time. Just look at history.. I think its time to break that mold and not be for a particular color but be for America. I am just saying that i think its time for a black president.. Just NOT Obama.

Good for you afelton for forming your own opinion. I work with some people that are voting for Obama only because he is black. They don't know anything else about him. I am not against a black president (I would vote for Condaleeza Rice and I wish she was running as we speak) but it's like any other President nominee, are they good for this country. And I agree with no matter what color they are, they need to be for America and there will be one in the future just not now, Obama is not the good choice. Good blog.

I wouldn't vote for Obama or Clinton. The democrats shut FL out just because we held our primary a few weeks early. Now when it is crunch time all of a sudden we are important to them. No way! I would boycot all of them.

Afelton - I'm with you. Don't like McCain much and hope that he selects Huckabee as his VP. But I would really prefer Alan Keyes. Now THAT would be truly historic ... and the liberal dems would have a cow. They would feel like racist for NOT voting for him LOL.

Huckabee as vice president? Tempermental McCain, with such a tenuous grasp on facts and reality, is bad enough -- but does America really need, as second in command, a man who freed a rapist to rape and kill again (despite the pleas of his victims) and covered up his adult son's brutal murder of a dog while employed as a counselor at a Boy Scout camp? Who needs "values" like those?

There are many black conservative thinking and practicing men that any nation could be proud of to lead them as President. To name a few
Herman Cain, Walter Williams, Shelby Steele, Jesse Peterson, Alan Keyes, Brad Stetson, Gary Franks,....OMG there are so many. But to waste such talent on a congress that just wants to keep a strangle hold on the middle class..I can't blame them for not pursuing the office of President.

Kiss will never get it. He should watch the Frontline special on National health care in other countries... you can get it at pbs.org and replay it. Advocates of UK or CA like care cant explain why the people eventually travel to the US it is so bad elsewhere. KISS, watch the Special first.

These are the Obama Liberals... not enough facts, voting without thinking and worse as in the black vote... blindly voting. There is not one thing that a black voter agrees with liberals but they still get conned. The segment of Black voters who live on and never want to get off Government assistance will vote for Democrats. But most issues of Black America is COnservative... Crime, Abortion, School Choice, etc. Obama and his NEA dont want school choice, most parents do.

HE is more liberal than Kerry and Gore and almost as bad as the 70s anti war icon candidate McGovern and see what happened to his landslide by Nixon.

Obama cant win as Hillary has shown in places he needs to beat McCain.

Afelton, its good to see people like yourself voting for logical reasons, rather than voting strictly out of emotions. I've been ready for a black, or even female, president for years now. You can imagine my disappointment when we wound up with the two choices we have now.

Kisshank, your mother-in-law was a tourist in England. It doesn't surprise me at all that she was given the "royal" treatment when she was injured. She was only going to be in England for a short period, so they probably treated her quickly for that reason. They probably also wanted to put out a good image for her, when she told of her experience back home. Worked on you, didn't it? I seriously doubt a British national would've received the same care as she did. To be fair, we probably would've done the exact same thing here for tourists. Its human nature.

The British system is hopelessly broken. My good friend who I worked with in Saudi Arabia works for British Aerospace and he flys to Thailand for medical treatment. They WILL take you in there as I spent 4 days in intensive care for congestive heart failure problems in a private room in Pattaya. My bill was just over $600! This would have probably been $15,000 or more here and I wouldn't have gotten the royal treatment. Hell, I could even order a beer from my room!

Afelton,

Look at history?? Yea ok, so black people were slaves to whites, but who do you think help blacks with freedom?? They didnt do it on their own! Maybe not all whites, but the most important whites had to agree and change the laws. Personally, I am glad that slavery itself is over, but why do people always bring it up. ie, a black person would say something about "what we had to go through" when they themselves didnt go through any kind of slavery.

Now that said, I dont think we are ready for a black president, or maybe even a female president. Even if we were I would not vote for Obama or even Clinton, I do not like everything they stand for. My views are closer to Mccain that the Depocratic nominees. I think he will be the one voted for president, partly because we are not ready for change, and partly because he is the best candidate. he used to be in the military, he is a good man, and cares about people and life. I dont think Obama or Clinton fully cares about peoples lives, just what they think should happen, or what they think the majority of the people want. Note that I said "want" not "need".

pink says: "Personally, I am glad that slavery itself is over, but why do people always bring it up. ie, a black person would say something about "what we had to go through" when they themselves didnt go through any kind of slavery."

its not just slavery. its the Jim Crow laws also. Lets not forget about that part of history. but the point i was trying to make is that Blacks dont always look out for Blacks. If that was the case the Black on Black crime would be a low rate. Yea there were quite a few whites who helped blacks during those times but some didnt because either they had racist tendencies themselves or simply because it was the law and they didnt want to overstep their boundaries.

and another thing, Why isnt America ready for a black or a female president? Why is it that we are so far behind on stuff like that when other countries have already had a female or a black leader? and we supposed to be the superpower of the world and suppose to set examples. why do we insist on being so arrogant? now that I said that I might be considered unpatriotic. But I am far from that!
