WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama and John McCain agree on at least one thing: they both think New Yorker magazine has gone too far with its cartoon cover showing Democratic presidential candidate dressed as a Muslim and his wife as a terrorist.

McCain says the cover is "totally inappropriate" and he understands "if Senator Obama and his supporters would find it offensive."

The New Yorker, in a statement today, says "satire is part of what we do" and the cover is an attempt to show what it calls the "prejudice, the hateful and the absurd" actions of right-wing critics of Obama.

You can view the cover HERE

Are you offended by the New Yorker cover?

Or are you ok with it?

I think the New Yorker cover just says what everyone is fearful about. That you can not trust Obama. That it is questionable what would happen if he got into the White House. And it says can we really trust him? The answer is no. So I say thank you. To someone else for saying what most of the U.S.A has been saying.

I think that it is plainly the truth and anyone in there right mind would not let the President of the United States be named Barack Obama and have ANY muslim heritage. I think he is connected in someway to terrorist.
Those who do not believe it now will see in the future!
HE IS NOT BLACK!!! HE IS MUSLIM and I would vote for a true black American!

It really does not offend me. I have thought that since I saw him turn his back on the Flag, and not put his hand over his heart for the National Anthem. He does not even wear the flag pin that all his constituents wear.

Get used to it B.O. because if you get elected the comedians and cartoonists are going to have a field day with you and your family. They will portray your baby girls on SNL, your babies' mama will continually get harrassed by every cruel female comedienne, they are going to make fun of your ears, your granny and your preacher....you will not be so protected then and everything will be fair game....just like they have done with Bush. If you are going to be a big baby...then get out now. And Mccain knows what is coming his way so he better get used to it also.

I think its wrong to have that picture on the cover of the New Yorker. You may not trust Obama or like his liberal ways but just because his name is Barack Hussein Obama does NOT make him a Muslim. Remember you dont get to choose your name when you are born. and also. The Jehovah's Witnesses dont pay respect to the United States flag. Does that make them less American? Hmmm.. I may have to think a little harder on that one! LOL

What a lot of people are missing here, is that the cartoon is NOT an attack against Obama. As I said on my own blog, the cartoon is a lampoon of how his right-wing opponents view him, pointing out the ridiculousness of their views. As usual, the general public fails to see the real picture, and jumps to conclusions.

No other president, current or previous, has ever complained about personal attacks as much as Obama has. Look how Bush, Clinton, Bush Sr., Reagan, etc, have all been lampooned in the past. Ever hear them complain? I haven't.

Obama needs to grow a pair (that is, if Jackson doesn't rip 'em off). As I've said before, this cartoon was drawn by someone who supports him. Just think of what the ones who don't like him will do.

They have a right (the New Yorker) to run the cover as much as the canidates have a right to complain. Its all part of being in public spoltight.

I agree with you AF..It is NEVER an exercise of Free Speech to SLANDER someone and in THIS day and age to portray ANYONE as a Terrorist without the SLIGHTEST bit of evidence is JUST that,, SLANDER,, of the WORST kind..

NOT that I think that THIS will hurt Obama’s chances ONE whit..Let’s NOT forget that THIS is a LIBERAL Rag..NOT the first time we’ve seen Respected Icons fall Prey to the Liberal Influence..Witness the fall in credibility in the Nobal Peace Prize and it’s selection process..

What offended me FAR more were the EXCUSES that the Publishers came out with.. Rather then accept the responsibility for their tasteless magazine cover they BLAME the “Right” for THEIR own transgression…And it SEEMS to be WORKING…

The FACT of the matter is that NO one,, from the LIBERAL LA . Times reporter who FIRST coined the phrase “Magic Negro” to the comments from the twin Emporers,, Sharpton and Jackson,, that Obama wasn’t Black enough to the Hillary Supporters attempts to Hi-jack the Convention,, NONE have been harder ans more incessant in their attacks against Obama..In a Conventional sense,, WHO has been a greater Liability to Obama??
The RIGHT or those on his OWN side..

On the OTHER hand..The “Poor Little Vicimized Me” characterization FITS the Left like a Glove..

These attacks against Obama are happening with SUCH a Frequency that I find it difficult to believe that they are NOT part of a STRATEGY by the LEFT..

THEY place such a HIGH Premium on victimization…..

The OTHER thing that I find offensive is that NOT only is Obama claiming “Underdog” status in thi

Freedom of expression is fine. If he does not respect this great country, then he should not be in office OR run for office here. He needs to go to where most of his funding money is coming from...overseas! I have also noted that he has spent a lot more of his funding monies then any other nominee... IMO, he will not have any problem spending OUR tax dollars either.

I respect satire but I think it was in bad taste to put this on the cover of the magazine. Just reading some of the post's here shows how stupid some people are and how much they will believe. It doesn't take much before someones racist and bigoted beliefs well up and this I think enforces those beliefs rather than exposes them.

I think the New Yorker did it to sell more copies plane and simple. At the same time they helped by making it clear this country has a long way to go before we can claim to be free of prejudice and bigotry.

To let your choice on who to vote for be based on ethnicity or race shows how ignorant some people are. I am ashamed to think of these people as my fellow Americans.
