Governor Crist said enough is enough.

He signed a law Tuesday saying no specialty license plates for three years.

Think no new plates is a good idea for now?
Or no big deal?

Do you even own a specialty plate?
Which one?

I used to have a speciality tag but the cost outweighs the need. Now I have a plain ole Fl. tag.
Yes there are too many tags and half need to be eliminated.

A license tag is a license tag -- a utilitarian object. It's meant to identify one's vehicle and the fact that one paid, essentially, a state tax on it. It's not meant to boost one's ego, reflect one's persona or advertise one's pet cause or private passion -- there are many other ways to do that without government involvement. If one's personality depends on a license tag, one needs to take a good, hard look at one's life. In the meantime, given the state of Florida's economy, crime rate and natural environment, the government has bigger problems to tackle than producing expensive vanity tags to cater to personal whims.

I have a Marine Corp specialty license plate on my vehicle.

I know I am paying a lot more to have it, but is my way to show my support to our troops.

A small price to pay to show how much they are appreciated.

I even get confused with all these specialty plates. So I can imagine how the cops must feel. I say get rid of all the specialty plates except for the Challenger-Columbia plate. The only reason I say keep that one is because of the lives lost in the search for knowledge.

Why not just buy License Plate frames? I have seen a frame and a license plate that is similar to that "I Believe" plate that was proposed and shot down by the state. If it really means a lot for someone to show their favorite sport or religious beliefs or whatever, then do it with a license plate frame.

Here is an example... http://www.advancedgraphicsinc.com/frames/religious.htm

That company is located in central Florida too!

If the specialty plates are to be eliminated (which is not the case now), then ALL should be eliminated.
I have mixed feelings about them because I do like how they look and some motorists have them matching their vehicles. But it can get confusing at times and I can imagine what its like for law enforcement trying to do their jobs when it comes to identifying plates.
Its interesting how groups are able to get plates, I think. You can get a bunch of signatures and provide a (fairly reasonable, it's not a million dollars) amount of money and now, no matter how offensive your message is you can get it on a government involved specialty plate!
But really, with all this tightening of the belt in the gov't and with times getting a little tough for some of these organizations, maybe this is the way for them to raise money...

I heard that FL does not have anyone checking to see if and how the money is being distributed to the causes that folks think they are supporting. I saw a story about a gentleman that lives outside of the US that was able to get a new tag approved for his "charity". But the charity is getting a very small percentage of the money from the tag. So until FL looks at all the current tags to see how much of the money is going to the cause, we do not need any more specialty tags. The FL government has bigger fish to fry than dealing with new tags!

Dear Samus007, The reason you cannot have a license plate frame on your car is because FL law states that it is illegal to have one around your rear license plate. So once again it would take the government to change the law before folks could feel comfortable with the frame not giving them a traffic ticket. Just thought you might want to know!

Interesting. I did not know that. I see plate frames all over the place. Even from car dealerships. And I have even seen police cars with them. Wonder if the cops would ever even bother enforcing that law?

I neither own or see the need for a specialty license plate. I've got a John Deere plate that I'll be putting on the front, it cost me about 6 bucs and once ! The specialty plates were a cash cow for the state, even though it was originally argued that it could make identification an issue. So it's a problem now ? Amagine that !

I agree with the Governor - no more new specialty license plates. I have U S Navy Florida License plates on all three of our cars in honor of serving in the USN. I don't think that you should have to pay the extra $17.00 every year - just the year you purchase the plate. Vanity plates to honor the miltary branches and colleges should be the only specialty plates.

CentralFlaLady, WRONG its not illegal to have a frame around your tag as long as the frame doesnt cover up anything. The ones that you will get pulled over for are the big ones that cover up things like the county name you are from or the stickers for the year etc.

Being a retired Air Force vet. I have Air Force plates on my car.
The thing with the specialty plates is that a portion of the money you pay goes towards a good cause.

Now VANITY plates....that's just someone trying to compensate for their own shortfalls.
I say keep the specialty plates and cut out the vanity plates.

There are WAY too many anyways. If there was one for juvenile diabetes, I wouldn't care how much I'd have to pay for it. As for now, I think some should be eliminated.

Why do we need to advertise we do something good?

I'd like to see the letters/numbers and colors of the plates stay the same, maybe change the Orange and add some more writing or something.

I think tags should be all the same, except I believe they should represent the county in which you have purchased the plate. Like it was when I was growing up. No sunshine state on it. I know your in Florida, but what county are you from? I think this would also make it easier for police to locate people who commit crimes.

If you want to support a cause, or be proud. By a bumper sticker, or a custom windshield tint.

I don't see a problem with having specialy tags for things involving the government - Armed Forces, public universities, NASA, etc. Everything else should be expressed through bumper stickers. They're much cheaper and you never have to renew them!!

Even before I became unemployed...I would not own a specialty plate. The State I was raised in had 1 state tag, front and back. Coming to Fla. and discovering all these fees that come with bringing and owning a vehicle here, along with an extra fee for a special tag, is just plain greedy on the part of the state. I wanted no part of it then, and I certainly cant afford to be part of it now.
I agree get a bumper sticker.

Excellent! I wish they'd do away with them
all together. I really don't care what college
you attended or support or what cause you support. People should support causes for supporting the cause, not for getting glory out of it or having the plate match the color of their car. support, support, support AND.................support!

I just make my own speciality tag out of cardboard and tape it to the back of the car. Why pay for a tag.

There are enough to choose from now so any more would be a over kill! I get a different one each year until the NASCAR one came out so now I will stick with that one! I only wish they did have more to choose from for motorcycles though!

I think we need a speciality plate for our butts since the way the gas prices are always going up and we will be walking everywhere soon.
