A Central Florida boy is hoping some adults come to their senses so he can go back to school.

a game of hot potato got him expelled. It happened when a group of students were tossing a kitchen timer around on the bus. It went off and one of the students joked saying, ‘It’s a bomb.’

No one thought any thing of it but days later the school questioned the students and recommended that the one who yelled be expelled for making a bomb threat. The principal later withdrew the expulsion order but the district attorney is still investigating.

What do you think, is it just horse play or a big over reaction?

Students need to learn that there is unacceptable to say certain words in certain situations. Someone may have heard that and not realized it was a joke.

Bombs are never a joke -- even more so in a day and age of terrorism and deadly campus violence. This kid is old enough to know better, and so are his parents. Instead of defending the little chucklehead, the big chuckleheads ought to flex some responsible parenting and teach their offspring some common sense and manners, rather than coddling him in his poor judgment. They, and not the school system, are the ones who need to come to their senses.

I think we're taking being politically correct far too far.

When I was a little kid, we played, "War." We shot each other with 'finger guns." Now, I suppose we'd be carted away for attempted murder? Making a threat with a weapon?

Clearly, the ones who need to go back to school are the principal and the district attorney.

My 11 year old son is a student in Marion County that just went through a similar situation before spring break. He has been bullied at school with no reprieve. At a point of being frustrated with no help from the teachers he stated " I wish this school would blow up" He received 10 days of suspension and they were wanting to put him in a alternative school for the remainder of the year. His school record has been perfect up to this school. I think the schools are to over eager to ruin a childs life than to help it. The schools are suppose to be a no bully zone and they create this mess and then complain that it is raining.

The marion county school system leaves a lot to be desired in the education of our children! They are very quick to place harsh punishment on kids these days! My own daughter was recently suspended for receiving a note in school.

For some reason they have taken to handing out referrals, suspensions and expulsions like candy! I personally can't wait to get my children out of this god fore-saken county! More importantly out of this counties school system!!!!!!

I often think it's those in charge who really need an education.

While a bomb threat is a serious thing, this has been taken way to far. This was handled eventually at the School level which is where it should have stayed since the student did not in "FACT" have a Bomb.

Don't the courts have better things to do? Especially since the only thing the student is really guilty of is poor judgement. Hopefully he will use poor judgement in the future but to take this to court. A waste of my tax dollars and yours.

Kudos Jim!!!Well said.....though they believe they know what is best. I've had the principal of the middle school tell me he went to school for being a teacher he knew what was best for my child and I should let him do his job!

Kids will be kids and they do tend to horse play around in ways that can be taken out of context! I think this is one of those times! I use to play HOT POTATO when I was a kids 40 years ago and if the bus driver didn't think anything of it then it should be within that bus drivers call because those kids were on the bus making the bus driver in charge!

I have personally dealt with the Marion County Public School system quite a few times for bus related bullying and horrible drivers. It seems that when they're in the wrong, they'll go to great lengths to 'protect their own.' I've had bus drivers flat-out lie and get away with it. This kid probably let the wrong words slip out, but it sounds accidental.

Way to go Marion County. "Judge finds teen guilty of threat" 8 years ago Star Banner written by Cary Davis. He was 14 and said "it would be cool" if the school dance blew up. He was convicted of a 2nd degree felony. This is Marion County in a nut shell. Big thanks to Judge Futch for that one too!!

As a student of Marion County Public Schools, with inside information on the situation, why would a child have a "kitchen timer" at school? Also, having many bomb threats last year and this year, I know how serious these can be. I don't think they're being too harsh, remember the other school shootings? Maybe if they would have taken the threats seriously, they wouldn't have happened, I feel expulsion is an easy punishment, jail time might have been a better choice.

The one thing about making fun over tragedies or threats can cause confusion and place question on the truth and intent! It would seem that these kids are possibly being used as an example and nothing else! Detention would be better to make the point, why the cops and the DA got involved or was called in clearly shows that even adults freak out before thinking or talking things through to get a clearer picture! KIDS PLAY AROUND! Every parent knows this and so should the schools!

It is very easy to pass judgement on school officials and as quickly point the finger for failing to act to protect your child. Marion County schools were severly disrupted at the end of last school year by bomb threats that truly "wasted" your tax dollars as well as disrupting the educational process at many schools. Unfortunately we live in a world where students do very violent things every day at school and on the bus and school officials cannot afford to take the chance with other kids' lives that it is a joke. The true solution lies in holding children accountable for their actions and stop pointing the finger at everyone else.

I find it funny, many of the people that are putting down the Marion County School System are people that have children that have gotten suspended. I personally, have never even gotten a referral, some stuff is dumb that they are given for (tardies) but this is a serious matter and need to be taken seriously. School is for learning, not horse play.

To Coltsdad, there is a clear difference between a BOMB THREAT and horseplay. I agree that school officials have a hard enough. This wasnt a phoned in bomb threat, or some randomly placed note, it was an elementary kid playing with a cooking timer.

School is serious. But I truly believe that the school system created some of this mess. My son has good grades and very intelligent and has never been in trouble before this. Our system is suppose to protect our kids. But when they fail they take the easy way out instead of resolving the true issue at hand.

I think we are giving the school officials too much power on how to handle our children.I mean look at the little girl they just taized not too long ago! Enough is enough, these are our children we're talking about here!!!!!

The poor kid was just trying to get a laugh from friends.
You have to teach your kids not to cry "Help" in a pool, but you simply can not go over all the "Do not says" there is.
There was no threat implied.
The kid made a mistake.
None of us would like watching that every word out of our mouths being scrutinized by authorities, especially days later.
He should have been asked to apologize or write an essay why that was a stupid thing to say. Suspended? I just can't see it.

And it was not a "kitchen time". Please just answer this one question, if you honestly believe that, why would a student bring a kitchen timer to school?

I'm sure that was the whole story, I have plenty of friends that have lied to school administration.

When the schools are expelling kids for telling lies - this is crazy. Rather than dealing with the kids - it is to easy for them to just expell them. We are tax payers are our kids have a right to an education. They are taking our childrens rights away.

NMHStudent2011

I'm sure the whole story was that your child told a lie. When people fight, they don't even get expelled from school, so why would they expell a child for telling a lie? Maybe there was more to the story?

After 9-11 all our children should know NOTHING LIKE THIS IS A JOKE ANYMORE. After 9-11 parents had a duty to sit with their kids and discussed all what's been happening lately, you can't take a paring knife (as it was called) to school or on the bus; you can't take a steak knife because you wanted left over steak..that steak should have been cut into pieces THAT EVENING...its time everyone takes responsibilities for their actions...AFTER 9-11 AMERICA SHOULD KNOW that threats are to be taken seriously...I truly blame the parents for not taking it serious but heck lets JUST CONTINUE TO BASH BUSH and blame the war on him too.......

some one needs to step in and define line between school matters and criminal matters...they cant be both! and in any case the parents must not lose their rights to be there when their children are questioned by police no matter if they are at school or not.
