This morning my head's pounding. I'm covering a small brushfire. The smoke's not even heavy, but it's there and it's aggravating. My eyes keep watering. The Health Department has put out an air quality alert. So just wondering if anyone else is bothered by this brushfire smoke? What are you doing to deal with it if you're outside?

Smoke bothers me big time.
I simply can not be outside in this air.
Inside I have a H.E.P.A air cleaner by Honeywell. (Made in USA)
This cleans the air.
If there is a sun beam and you see the little floaties in the air, just turn this thing on and watch the floaties dive bomb for the air cleaner.
Within 15 minutes all the floaties are gone.
This air cleaner will trap this level of smoke, but not the level that a smoker will put in the air, because the air filter will trap the smoke, then just smell.
If you are dealing with a smoker in the house, just put him or her out and that will take care of that problem.

I know it's strange, but I actually like the smell of a fire.

Valerie: We need to pray that this year is nowhere near as bad as last. I can remember at its peak last year driving north on I-75 in Sumter County near Wildwood and it looked like I was driving into a severe thunderstorm. It was smoke.

We had one not far from us last weekend (the fire was in Gilchrist County). Fortunately, the smoke from that fire went elsewhere.

Mom: I like the smell of a fire, too (like one burning in a fireplace), but the acrid smoke from these forest fires is nasty if you ask me.

Valerie: As a member of the news media, perhaps you can tell me...WHY are they referred to as "brush" fires? Why not call them what they are? Forest fires or wild fires? To me, a "brush fire" is someone's pile of yard clipping catching fire. When the woods burn, it is a FOREST FIRE.

Floyd-You make a good point. However, during my interviews firefighters have always referred to burning leaves and trees as "brush". I think that's why they call it a brush fire.

I was a Vol. firefighter in NC and used to get severe headaches after a brush fire, I was told it was from the pine sap...but they would last several days.

The term “brush fire” refers to the natural and essential function of the fire to remove “brush” . Fire is the natural state of this place we live in and most of the trees that you think are burning can actually only reproduce when a brush fire releases their seeds (they are serial if they do not burn) . Not having controlled brush fires every year only leads to the dangerous condition we faced in the 90's when so much brush/grass/undergrowth had accumulated that the whole state caught fire....Brush fires are a natural and beneficial component of Florida's ecosystem ! Not allowing brush fires is unnatural and dangerous

Yes, people like fireplaces, candles, and incense.
Others can not tolerate smoke.
If you have serious problems with it, just get the hepa air cleaner and use it in your bedroom.
Having a good night's sleep will do wonders for your health.
The smoke and dust can irritate sensitive tissue, allow infection to set in, and give you serious problems that you can give to others.
Allergies are not catchy, but once bacteria infects tissue, bacteria in the upper respiratory tracts is very infectious.
Hope you feel better.

Well said RNC. Unfortunately just found
out that some of these fires are looking
"suspicious" according to reports.

My mother got caught on I-95 coming back from
S. FL on Mother's day and we missed getting
to take her out yesterday.
