Finally............... I am in full support of the feasible study regarding costs of Deltona policing their own city. I think is way overdue, when we incorporated as a city, these actions should have been looked into.

So Kudos to the mayor, for looking into what is best for the citizens in Deltona, and letting us decide. I hope and pray for the sake of our city, that we will get our own police dept. Its long overdue, and very much needed in our community.

Now if we can get more jobs for our residents, maybe we can truly become a self sufficent city. that we as citizens would be PROUD to live in.

As big as Deltona has gotten, it's probably not a bad idea. The Sheriff's Office will still
back them up, and do all their prisoner transport. It'll be interesting to see how it works out, if it goes through.

Can we get cops who dont sleep in their cars at night, Speed faster then anyone for no reason at all, and ones who are honest enough to actually do their jobs?

Not sure having our own PD will stop any of that ADeltonian. Matter of fact, I'm not sure of what the advantages are, other than it will cost a lot more (especially initially) to start and maintain a PD.

Cost such as personnel with all the benefits, retirements, etc. K-9 and helicopters. These things are now provided by the Sheriff and included in the contract. To take these costs on ourselves will be very expensive.

Deltona IS a bedroom community, with little business. That will probably never change.

I'll keep an open mind, but I don't think the Sheriff is doing a bad job at all. Maybe we need to include more deputies in the city, but think that will still be a lot cheaper than starting and maintaining our own dept.

ALso, the Police Chief, who will work for the city commission, is more subject to favors and control by them. The deputies are more independent, and could care less if you are a city official or not.

Those are good points Fla Native, but fact is Deltona is the 2cd largest city in Volusia County. We should be able to police our own, thats what cities do, and one of the reasons I voted for incorporation! I want to see my tax dollars going to my community....not ALL of Volusia. There are many problems in this community, that dont hit the news. And any resolutions from the sheriffs dept. I have not been party too. I have found VCSD very lax, and over stepping, in our community (speeding through our town like they own it, or sending 5 troopers to ticket a little old lady who was speeding, or going to slow). I also do not care for VCSD condescending ways to members in our community. One reports a crime, and you get to feel like you are the criminal. With NO resolutions or follow ups.
No its about time we policed our own, and we are growing as a community, more business is moving in, we are becoming self-sufficent. Deltona is not a "Baby" anymore, and we can stand on our own two feet now.

I wish you luck , but FN is right about the cost. At first you will find that you have to fight the county to make them let you keep any of your tax dollars locally and you will not get any federal dollars until you police department is up and running ...its an up hill battle but you already know the advantages of a local police force .
On the subject of “jobs” do you guys have any ideas ? Your location would lend itself to something agricultural based faster than industrial* , just a thought but the “hot thing” this year in Florida is adding local Ethanol production and or generating electricity by burning landfill waste (you can get tax breaks / federal money for both of those but the landscape will shift again next year)
*Orange county has a huge industrial base and Tampa has unused capacity that is siting empty, makes it hard to break into the market !

Well it is nice to have more local shopping available. Better resturants would be nice too. I do believe that deltona is trying to "court" businesses into our area, as i have seen alot of growth recently. I guess time will tell.

The shopping part is OK , we all shop at Waly World but it does not do a lot for the local economy. They pay squat and import everything from china ! Heck they don't even pay their drivers over minimum!

helps my pocketbook...rather drive 2 blocks than 10 miles, which used to be the way around here. Always had to spend my monies in another community because we didnt have anything, and i believe in keeping community dollars in the community. i'd rather do local business, rather than out of town business. Buts that just MHO.
i'm looking forward to see what the study recommends, and what the voters decide.

Don't think it much matters who races to the Dounut shop, sleeps under a tree or just doesn't do there job.....

Twizller....I agree with some of the problems with VCSO...speeding, attitude, etc., but how would our own PD change any of that???

I see an OPD cop several times a week, that lives in Deltona, speeding on I-4 back and forth to work.

The issues you mentioned with cops can happen if we keep VCSO or have our own.

Again, I'll keep an open mind, look at the costs, etc. Enjoyed the comments.. Thanks!

I am fully for this. The size of the area justifies it. Look at cities that have police departments that are barely a square mile in size. Eatonville, Oakland ( near winter garden ) Edgewood ( near orange ave).

I dont think some realize just how large a city
deltona is. There are SO many cities that are so much smaller that have police forces. But expect your taxes to skyrocket. You will have to still pay for sheriffs taxes in county tax then add the new law enforcement to the city part of the taxes. But still I think it is worth putting it to the voters

Which is what I am looking forward to, getting an op to vote on it. I just hope the study isnt "skewed " in any way. And "fools" us into doing the wrong thing, as politicians tend to "push" their "own" agendas.

deltona to me could use thier own pd. alot of bad things go on around here un -noticed, it'd be great if it helped with some of the teenage little thugs on the street hanging out in groups with no where to go. it'd also be nice if there were more for the kids to do around here to help keep them off of the streets and out of trouble.

I'm just a United States citizen, wondering what the heck is going on these days, and looking to find some intelligent people, to possibly find a solution to this mess, so that everyone can really live the American Dream. I believe brainstorming can solve alot of problems, if we can keep our egos aside.
