Soaring gas prices, with no end in sight, is going to change the auto industry. You're going to see a major push to steer clear of cars and trucks powered by gas. Gas-powered vehicles are on their way out.

General Motors stock is way down. If I'm GM, I'm pushing all my resources towards building fuel-efficient cars, and develope another fuel source besides gas.

It's serious, folks. We need to join the 21st Century and stop building gas-powered cars. Electric, H2o, cow dung. Whatever. No more gas!

I'd even scrap space travel and use NASA's resources and smarts to come up with something.

Your turn.

Wish I was educated in these things. Can you imagine the money to be made? Of course, the government would kill you before you could go public. They want you to stay stuck on gas, FOREVER!

I am truly concerned in the security of the country ... as well as our economic security.

I am now in favor of off-shore exploration and drilling off Florida coasts. We must do something now to ensure US oil independence.

Since Michigan Auto makers havent heard a thing their customers have said in 20 years, they deserve to crumble. It is sad that the workers have to suffer while the CEOs make a fortune. How ever while Ford, GM and Chrysler are falling like a rock,Toyota and Honda and Kia are prospering and way ahead of the curve with Fuel cells and non Gas engines on the board. GMs cure is the Volt that has fire problems that the CEO calls "thermal issues"... and that is the best those "experts" can do.

I did promise to keep you informed of our plans to kill Big Oil and Big auto.

And where's GM's Hydrogen Fuel Cell car they
like to tease people with on their commercials
saying "and coming soon...Hydrogen powered vehicles" or whatever. This all comes down to
the failing education system in this country.
India ans Asia produce like 70% more engineers
than the US. The students are already taking
Algebra by 5th grade over there! And I hate
to say it but, these Chinese people have some serious skills and vision although we won't
be afforded the technology until these countries get tired of it and develop something
even better!! Or when our government allows it!
It's sad!

I'll say it again and again...we need to quit
producing athletes and American Idols
in this country and reset our values to
positively reinforce intellectual ability
to our children in this country or we will
be shut out of this "wonderful" global economy!
Kids have nothing but pipe dreams nowadays!

It still takes at least 3 years to bring a car from the drawing board to production. Gas prices in 2005 were at the 2.00 level. Here is a good site for anyone interested in the history of fuel cost: http://zfacts.com/p/35.html

That's true, sometimes longer.

I'm really upset at Ford for redesigning
everything and making some
new designs but then not touching
the Ranger in 10 years, one of their best, most fuel efficient vehicles, The 4-banger gets like 35 MPG and no one is buying them because the design is tired. OK, you can't
tow a 35 foot Grady-White with it but
you can haul all that bed can hold!

In the meantime, you can't FIND a 4cyl Frontier
or Tacoma to buy and if you do, check the sticker first! We're getting slaughtered
in the automotive industry and the only
ones suffering are the little people.

You can always cut a big hole in your floor board and be like the Flintstones Tom...This is nothing New, everyone has Known for years this day would come, but this country is great for waiting till in slaps them in their face..
But for some Ranger Pickups and smart cars will not get the job done, Try pulling a 50' horse trailer with a Ranger or smart car, that won't happen, So big trucks and in some cases big car & Suv's are needed. I still can't get over this BS on putting Ethenole in gas, you use more gas, get less HP and DRIVE FOOD COSTS UP, Horse, Cattle, Chicken, Dog, Cat food also...

Not quite sure of the name calling but, electric cars would harm the planet worse than gas cars. And America has more coal than the mid.east has oil... America has plenty of resources here in our own country to have our own oil but our Goverment is doing everything possible to prevent us from being energy independant. Instead of scaping the gas powered car I think we need to scrap our Government first.
Let me ask you this Tom, if we scrap all our Gas powered cars can we store all those cars and trucks in your yard? I am sure you stating we need to scrap our cars and trucks give you a warm fuzzy feeling thinking you doing something great but just keep this in mind, ( for every action their will be a reaction). How about DRILL HERE AND DRILL NOW!

Woo Tom leave NASA out of this , rockets run on water so they are not a part of the problem ! As far as GM making “better cars” if you look beyond the American car market you will find that GM actually has the largest number of super efficient cars in the world (just not building them here) ...in places like China / India she sells millions of 40 to 55 MPG cars every year. On EV (electric vehicles) don't fool yourself the electricity you are putting into that thing comes from somewhere and 15% of our electricity is still generated from oil! Hydrogen is just plane hard to store (I should talk I am building hydrogen generators as fast as I can work right her in my home LOL) so unless you find a magic way to get it to stay put in the gas tank or are willing to fill up every day its still no within reach....

....cow dung or more specifically methane is OK but is not in great supply . CNG is available now in many parts of the country and is as low as $.71 a gallon if you are on “city gas” and the price is right BUY a CNG car and fill up at home! ...The most promising answer right here right NOW Is Ethanol*, but your call to the automakers is not off base ...it is possible and with supply available practical to build cars that run better (higher MPG) on ethanol : the octain rating of ethanol is much higher than regular gas BUT all current cars are designed to run on 87 octain gas and use ethanol (E85 E90 etc) only some of the time so they suffer from holding on to the past (20 to 30% drop in MPG on ethanol fuel) ....
Facts : Ethanol can be made from any organic material including garbage (it does not have to be made from corn!) , it is produced here in America (that means American jobs boys and girls) , it is 95% cleaner than gas (you only have to change your oil every 10,000 miles when burning only ethanol!) , it is renewable (we can ALWAYS make more!) so it is sustainable forever!

....I am not against producing hydrogen as a “point of use fuel” but it has eluded me so far...a 7 liter per minuet generator is using 200 amps at 12 volts (or 29 hors power relative) and will not keep my 3.1 liter engine running above 2100 RPM. I plan on trying to reconfigure for a 1.8 liter but have to wait until I have the cash...and I am concerned about using 1/3 the total HP of my engine to produce fuel for the engine.....

I don't see why your being critical of GM. They are using the exact same technology as Honda for their hydrogen research. It's the Canadian Ballard fuel cell. Ford Chrysler and Ballard have a joint venture going also.. So don't say they aren't doing anything

Is maybe the fact that rather than it cant be done it's not economically viable yet?

I was recently involved in a conversation regarding this topic. It seems lots of people are looking towards electric cars. the down side is they run on deep cycle LEAD batteries. (these have a life expectency of 3yrs & are expencive to replace.. If the EV manufaturers where able to incorperate Nickle Hydride batteries (Like those in Hybrid Cars) the batteries would last 8-11yrs.. The other issue that comes up is distance & charge time. Most EVs have a 80 mile round trip cap on distance traveled. and take 6-12 hrs to recharge. There should be a way to utilize regenerative braking like the hybrid cars to recharge the batteries while driving..

I never called you any names Tom , as far as power all I am saying is we need to make better choices! And atomic energy is the best choice hands down (cleanest, cheapest, fastest to be available etc) .

Hold on raw fish , your statements about battery life are misleading ...actual “life span” of a batteries is Dependant on usage and no batteries (of any kind) can be stored (not used) or used regularly (50%/60% discharge per day ) and actually last even 4 years let alone 8 ...LA (lead acid) batteries do not have a set number of charges and fail based on dendrite formation in the cells or low fluid level if not maintained, SLA's (sealed lead acid ) batteries fail because they can not be refilled and they just plane run out of electrolyte. New types of batteries fail because of “total saturation” of the membrane plate Assembly by hydrogen molecules (similar to dendrite formation but different LOL) so NIM batteries fail faster the more you use them ...if/when you use them in a car that you drive every day and average of 21 miles per day (national average for all cars) they will last approximately 2 years. (stated usage is up to 2000 charges but a partial charge and or variable discharge counts against them! My personal findings as a user have been a drop of 30% total amp output at 600 to 700 partial use cycles )

...EV part two, It would be far more practical to incorporate new motor tech into electric cars than to keep trying to use “regenerative braking” (that was good idea in the 60's LOL) ...to brake it down a car with “regenerative braking can in theory regenerate 1% to 55 of the power used to put the car in motion BUT to do this it MUST use a “brush type motor” (20% to 30% efficiency ) on the other hand a modern brush less motor is 70% (or more) efficient this means more than twice the mileage on the same batteries...but its up to you , ask for a car with a lot of “buzz words” in it or ask for better EV's all together!

A properly designed "hybrid" or self regenerating EV makes sense. Like a long range EV.

People have to remember lead acid batteries have a core charge, take them back to get remaned or loose your money. It's up to you. Wasn't Toyota going to a lithium battery? the NiMH are most likely due to be recycled due to the ease of reclaiming and high cost of industrial nickle.

I honestly think it's going to be a slow and steady progression over a decade or two. If it's no cost effective theres no point ot it.

..I build/design power wheelchairs , and I am not kidding about using “brush less” or revers designed DC motors instead of conventional motors...you can't “Regenerate” with them but they are 230% more efficient than what must be used to regenerate power...our “progress” will be slow no mater what we do the motors I am using on wheelchairs (1000 inch pounds of force and a 50 mile range on an 80 amp hour 24 volt battery) cost 25 million dollars to develop (over five years) and are about 1/6 the size that will be required for an EV ...I still use LA batteries because of the “thermal loss” issues in all batteries they suffer just as much but I can refill the cells and keep them going ! ...yes we must keep recycling batteries even tho the market price has dropped for “lead” , I was getting $2.50 each for batteries three years ago now they are only worth $.50 each : (

Ok, so you get rid of gas power vehicles. Now what are you going to use to get your boat/jetski to the water, not to mention the power you'll need to get them out of the water. You sure as heck won't be able to do it with a electric/cow dung/air powered car.

There's a lot of military installations that use propane. Seems to be a good alternative and doesn't appear to suffer from power loss. Once the propane tank runs out, it switches to the gas tank until you fill up again.

So my thought is why can't the auto industry make vehicles like that available to the public?

Battery is the answer, why else would the oil companies have been buying up the patents?
Battery technology as developed in spite of roadblocks with lightening speed since computers: lithium, nickel, titanium, Toshiba's Nanobattery which recharges 80% in one minute!
The batteries could be recycled, repaired and re-loaded just like the NASA first stage power boosters which uses solid fuel, aluminum compounds and resins.
The second stage holds liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.
NASA has already explored alternative fuels.
In some countries, the Peace Corp build tanks in back yards that utilize animal and probably people dung to make gas to run stoves, lights, and refrigerators.

Electric cars started as the first choice among autos in the beginning of the 20th century.
Then the electric starter and Ford took the industry in the gasoline direction.
Yes, put NASA space shots on solving problems on Mother Earth.
However, do not scrap the space program.
When Bush had that satellite shot out of space, he was demonstrating where we are first in the world and will remain first in the world.
Terrorist try to put a satellite in the sky and guess what will happen!
NASA is not just about cell phones and tv reception, but about national security.

Most NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries
are easily recycled and are said to
be 100% safe for the environment. This is
the chemical makeup of batteries that most electric vehicles use.

Don't know if that applies to the many
idiots that I'm sure would illegally
dump these batteries but, disposed
of legally they are safe.

Even your modern Alkaline battery can be broken
down naturally & safely nowadays with the minimal amount of lead used. Battery makers had to do this because WE were just throwing batteries in the trash instead of bringing them to proper facilities.

The reason we don't have more electric cars
is because building a gasoline engine
creates more jobs than building an
electric motor. Many jobs would be cut
if we went strictly electric. Add to
that, most electric motors are built in
China & Japan.
