Hello Everyone,

Well, the only thing I really want to say is, trying to go shopping for Hannakuah decorations or anything to do with this Jewish Holiday is like looking for a needle in a haystack..

I will be the first to admit, I am Jewish and proud of it....I also celebrate X-Mas with friends, but why are retailers so biast against The Jewish Holidays?  Trying to find a Menorah, candles, etc., is terrible, one should not have to drive all around town just to find some Hannakuah items....we should be able to walk into any retailer, Walmart, KMart, Target, Publix, Winn-Dixie, etc., and should have a choice of Hannakuah items!  Instead, all you see are rows and rows and rows of X-Mas items, decorations, but not one Hannakuah item!  You would be lucky if you can find a couple cards for Hannakuah, yet, millions of choices for X-Mas Card..

This is not right, we of The Jewish Faith have just as much right to celebrate our Holidays as the Christians do, so in short, WHERE ARE THE HANNAKUAH DECORATIONS?

They're on Ebay. Imagine trying to get stuffed derma in rural Florida! I make my own "Jewish" food; Publix here has a fair selection.

Retail is very demographic. Ain't too many Jews around there here parts. Walmart doesn't hate Jews, Walmart hates Humanity.

Yes Vittorio, Publix here in Central Florida only has a couple items, I have gotten some on EBAY, but it should not have to be that way, we of The Jewish Faith should be able to walk into any store and be able to buy the Hannakuah decorations just like X-Mas ones, stores are totally biast against us Jewish People, why should we have to pay shipping from EBAY? Totally not fair..SHAME ON TO ALL THE STORES......And there are plenty of Jewish People in Central Florida, they moved here from Miami Beach, where I am from, in fact, Ocala is becoming the new Jewish Retirement Community instead of Miami Beach!

Toddt, another victim of what, discrimination by stores against the Jewish Faith, I agree! As I mentioned before, I do celebrate X-Mas with my Christian Friends, but heck, us Jewish people as well should have a choice of Hannakuah decorations just like X-mas decorations, totally unfair!!

Claw ,Are you a practicing Jew?Or just one who likes to whine? If you are practicing go to your Rabbi, or someone in your congeration should be able to steer you right . I'm sure there are speciality stores. And don't complain about having to go to certain stores, isn't that part of Judism,"a people set apart".

These folks have a point although they express themselves poorly. We live in an overwhelmingly Christian area and retail caters to the majority. Just a fact of life in a free country. You can practice your religion, post here, whatever. Try getting a nice blue spruce in Jerusalem.

You can always re locate to NYC. I agree that you're declaring yourself a victim and whining. And on Thanksgiving!

Hey The Claw,

I just gotta ask....is this your first year being jewish? Shouldn't you already have most of this stuff from previous years of being jewish??

A couple additional thoughts. If you truly cannot find these items.....ask another jew! Also, please be a part of the solution and not the problem.....we have plenty of that in America today!

Mr. Toddt,

I don't think it is any of your business how long I have been Jewish, how long have you been Christian? Yes, I still have some stuff from years ago, but heck, one would want to freshen up their decorations anyway, you see the same people buying new X-Mas stuff year after year, stuff wears out after a few years, one wants to freshen up, Menorah's do not last forever, candles burn out, etc.....
So get off your high horse.....we Jewish people have just as much right to walk into any retailer and be able to buy Jewish decor, Hannakuah Decor, etc., yet, you walk into a store and see rows and rows and shelves and shelve of Chrisitmas stuff, and not one thing for Hannakuah!'
Now, in case you did not know, but you may, Jesus Christ was JEWISH! Yet, his birthday, Dec. 25th is considered a High Holy Day for Christians! Think it over sir..

Hey don't body slam me sister...LOL! I agree you do deserve to be able to buy your stuff BUT my point is you do not need to play the victim role.

Example: I need a kidney transplant. I did not and have not complained about it. Instead I am a spokesperson for the National Kidney Foundation. I attend a monthly support group meetings so I can be around others like myself and better understand my condition and what to expect and even ask questions from the experts that have been there done that.

Nov 29, 2008 | 10:28 AM

Sorry to hear about your Kidneys, but that has nothing to do with what we are talking about..all I am saying is, retailers should carry a better selection for Hannakuah decor as 98% of them are biast against Jewish people, why do I say that, walk into any store and see how many Hannakuah items you find compared to X-Mas items......

Claw, this is going to make some people laugh, but I mean it very seriously. Try a Christian bookstore! They carry a variety of things.... I'm serious.

By the way, I know your boss. How is Marti doing??

Pastor D....

Interesting about the Bookstore...will find one, and yes, Marti & Dory are doing great, thanks for asking....I hope you don't think I am crazy for thinking the way I do about Decor for Hannakuah or other Jewish Holidays....I just don't think we should have to run around town to specialty stores when Retailers could very well carry a small selection, a couple shelves of Hannakuah items, yet they carry endless shelves/selections of X-Mas Decor and nothing for Hannakuah, shame on them...

It is a pretty serious matter. Wait til the Christians are unable to find their Christmas decorations. They have already been reduced to "holiday trees". lol

Tell Dory and Marti "Fleet" a petite pretty blond, Branch President" give them the initials "SK". They will know who I am. :+)

Pastor D.

Finally, somebody with a lick of sense about this matter! I am not against X-Mas at all, I do the present thing, etc., as not everybody I know is Jewish, but for people that are Jewish, we have just as much right to Jewish Decor as the Christians have for their X-Mas trees.....and once again, to ignorant people out there who may not know this, but Jesus Christ was Jewish! But yet, December 25th, which is his Birthday, is celebrated as a religious Christian Holiday, hence Christmas.....I have no problem celebrating the "12" days of X-Mas, but us Jewish Folk also celebrate the "8" days of Hannakuah, which is known as The Festival of Lights! So, to all the Christians out there, MERRY X-MAS, and to my Hannakuah Pals, HAPPY HANNAKUAH, !

The trick is not to let things like this bother you. Do what you must to deal with it and enjoy the Winter Holidays.

Do what I do; let nothing bother you. It works! And yes, my shrink knows I'm crazy. Life is good.

Blessed be.

Well, the problem here may be demand. I hate Walmart, and only go there if I can't find something I want. Once about 3 years ago I went there looking for a new set of lights for the tree, as the old set was dead.
It was late, and all the shelves were picked clean!
However, I did notice the few items left were all Hanukkah decorations, including Menorahs and even Dreidels!
So if the items are not purchased, they will not order any the next year.

It is not discrimination at all, but a simple matter of what sells.

I am not Jewish, but I grew up with many Jewish friends. In fact, I can't have Christmas without my Latkes!

Daytona Frank,

Now, Walmart does not even carry Hannakuah items, and has not done so in years, not where I live....I am not saying the retailers need to have the amount of Hannakuah items that they carry for X-Mas, but a couple shelves would be nice, and once the word gets out that some stores carry the items, more people would buy it, we should not have to go online to order stuff, it gets expensive with shipping and handling....I have never seen any store that does carry hannakuah items, which may be a choice of only a couple items, I have never seen those shelves picked clean, and if they are, well, that should tell the store to carry more! I HAVE NEVER SEEN A STORE PICKED CLEAN OF X-MAS DECOR, NEVER, NEVER, IN FACT, AFTER X-MAS, all those items go on sale, that is the time to buy the itmes for next year! But, the retailers still stock the same items the following year, if they sell or not, so that line of thinking does not work..sorry.....

Well, I was just relating my own experience. Yes the shelves were barren of most Christmas items, and yes Hanukkah decorations were plentiful.

You do seem to want to whine about how your Hanukkah decorations are not stocked everywhere though, even in places where they do not sell.

What is your point here? Are you really Jewish?

What is the Sabbath Day?

Yes, I am Jewish and I don't think it is any of your business asking me that question, how dare you! My point is this, Retail stores should carry some sort of Hannakuah Decorations, I have never seen a store go empty of X-mas decor, never! Stores do not sell out of their X-mas stuff, when the Holidays are over, they even put that BLEEP on sale and still there is the horn of plenty! But yet, they stock the same X-mas items that do not sell the following year, after year, after year! And I have never seen a store that carries more than a coupole Hannakuah items...what planet are you from? Are you Chrisitan? Ha...

Well, unless you are ashamed of being Jewish, I do not understand your offense at that question. Yes I am Christian, and proud of it.

I was looking for a simple set of lights, and maybe a box or two of ornaments. I went to two different Walmart Supercenters, Target, Kmart, and Dollar General. None of these stores had any lights or ornaments left, and most other items were also sold out. It was in the Walmarts that I noticed the Hannakah decorations.
I finally found a set of lights in Home Depot of all places, but no ornaments.

Call me a liar if you wish, but I assure you that is the truth.

Sir,

I am not calling you a liar at all, and I am proud of being Jewish..

But I have gone to several Walmart's, Lowe's, HomeDepot stores, Kmart and Target, and they have gobs and gobs of X-Mas decor, lights, and no Hannakuah stuff except for a couple cards and maybe a box of candles, but that is it...you must be talking of years ago, but here in Ocala, there is nothing.....even Dollar General has gobs of X-Mas stuff....no Hannakuah except for a couple cards.....HomeDepot and Lowes, gobs of X-Mas stuff, not a thing for Hannakuah...

I guess it was a few years ago, 2003, and I was searching for these items on Dec.23.

I don't know if you belong to a synagogue, if so they might be able to help you with this, and point you to a store that carries what you are looking for. Ocala must not have a very large Jewish community, otherwise I would think Hannukah decorations would be easy to find.
Or the opposite is also possible, they do have a large Jewish community, and Hannukah items are already sold out.

There are many Jewish in this area, especially Ormond Beach. There are several synagogues, and if you like I would be happy to contact them for you and see where you can find the items you want.

I apprecaite your help, but my Temple has the same problems....and believe it or not, Ocala is slowly becoming the new Jewish Retirement community..instead of moving to Miami Beach where I am from (Bronx, NY, then M.B., now Ocala)the retirees are moving to Ocala Central Florida, there are retirement communities popping up like fire here.....but hardly any stores carry any hannakuah items except for a couple cards and maybe candles....but I have never seen a store run of of x-mas stuff, in fact, all the leftovers go on sale after X-mas, that is the time to buy them, for the following year..oh well, one never knows...

Funny. I was born in the Bronx. We moved upstate when I was like 10. I worked the "borsht belt" in the Catskills including the Tamarack, Fallsview, Granit, Nevele, and even the Concord and Grossingers.

I lived in Miami Beach for two years, where I worked at the Algiers, the Sterling, and the Montmarte. I was the Maitre'D Hotel at the Barcelona.
