Right or wrong we are in Iraq. It has cost us plenty of dead and broken Americans. Do we just walk away or can we reverse a bad situation and realize a profit from this war?

I had the chance this evening to talk at length with a friend of ours who is an army col. that has spent a great deal of time in Iraq. He supports Bush like you would expect of any good officer but he is not a zealot. He tells me that overall things are improving over there. The general population have no idea how american style democracy works. They are very clanish and its tough for the average american to understand just how that effects how Iraqis think. They are growing very tired of the constant violence and just want it to end. In the beginning we were fighting Iraqi resistance. I thought about what if the roles were reversed. If Iraqis invaded Lake County I would be bearing arms against them and I would be more than willing to die defending Tavares. You can bet your ass I would take alot of those swarmy bastards with me and I would be sure to let them know how I would be deflowering thier virgins in the afterlife! Anyway the good Col. says the majority of problems there are now caused by "outsiders" doing what fanatics willing to die for a cause do. This left me with still more questions. How many more American lives will it take to stabilize Iraq. Are we willing to do what it takes to achieve stablilty?

New estimates rate Iraqi oil potential much higher than was thought before. 10million barrels per day is what could be expected. The USA uses 20million barrels per day.  Current Iraqi GNP is estimated at $87billion.  Even at the cut rate of $50 per barrel there is the potential for $180billion + per year in oil revenues for Iraq. They could sure use that money. We need cheap oil for our economy to thrive. You want an economic stimulus? How about gas a $2 a gallon? It might take some strong-arming to lock up the rights and I don't know we we have the balls to do it. Cheap Iraqi oil would buy us time that we need to develop alternate energy sources if we really put forth the effort. I have no doubt we will come up with solutions that seem far off now. Zero Point Energy anyone?

TavaresJim...let us address what you just wrote in metaphor. Let say you were mad at your neighbor and you wanted his wife. Not only do you want her for yourself, but also to pimp her out to others. So you break in his house on a false pretense that he was a treat to the community, kill him, and then pimp her out.

Sounds nasty doesn’t it, but think about it as a parallel scenario. How do other nations view our behavior in the world? We can’t just go into sovereign nations on trump-up charges and propaganda to rip-off their natural resources. The person described in the metaphor above will sustain certain rebuke from his other neighbors, and he’ll never be trusted to enter anyone else’s home.

The war was dumb, and we need to abort this mission. We are not Vikings or Vandals. We supposed to be an honorable and trusted friend to the world and not just to the interest of greedy oil-men.

I would be the first to turn back the clock and have a do over but that ain't gonna happen. We could try and make the best of it. Plus they are getting paid for the oil. Do people want to run this country like a business or not?

not an easy problem, we are there - wmd or no wmd.

History tells us that in that part of the world, theres always been problems.
I too believe its got better over there but a lot of those countries are run by religious fanatics or let religion dictate the running of the country.

If we are talking a muslim run country, rmember thier Koran wants them to live apart from us because we are not worthy citizens.

couple that with the fact theres different factions of the same religion , its a whole big mess I believe we were wrong to get into.

I fail to understand also why IF muslims hate us so much why theres so many of them wanting to move to the west.?

I believe also due to the threatening nature of the Iranians , we do need a presence in the mid east all the time.
and if that toothless tiger the UN fails in its diplomatic solutions with Iran, expect a few bombs to fall on thier reactors.
and when that happens, Its gonna be on !

strangely, A lot of "ordinary" Iranians have positive views of the west, its becuase of the Imams and other religious zealots that they are in this mess.

The Muslim hating us thing is bunch propaganda. We have millions of Muslims living in the USA, and they don't hate America or the American people. The Iranian people oppose many of the policies of their government just as we do. The problem many Muslim countries have with the US is the imperialism we often project. Right now, our so call allies hate the US as much as Muslim countries because of unilateral policies.

The lone-wolf cowboy diplomacy is the culprit in the deterioration in our world status. George W. Bush is like an old western movie that depicts a gunslinger coming to town and disrupting the whole town. He effectively succeeded in allowing Osama Bin Ladin to win the war. The theme of the 911 attack of the Trade Center was to strike at America’s economic heart. Answer me this, are we in an economic mess? Bin Ladin played Bush like a flute.

Kazzi you are off your nut ! Muslims in America have been proven to be in support of violent Muslim radicals..in simple terms American Muslims put their religion ABOVE the interest of this country.
To the post , we did not go into Iraq for oil but Iraq is the second largest oil producer in the world and when she is back in production it will help bring the price down NO MATER who she sells to. As far as us having a presence in the region “its a no brainier” we where called upon under Clinton to send troops to that region again and again ...just look at a Map (I mean it for most of you GO LOOK AT A MAP!) Iraq is located between Afghanistan and Iran and it is just south of Syria it is the perfect spot for us to have a large military standing to address problems from Africa to Russia and eastward to China....things are improving , a little by our American standard of such things but a LOT they the standards of that region ! All we need do is make it clear that we are here to stay and the benefit will be long lasting !

..on the subject of our good friend Syria , I would rather not find out the hard way what was in all the trucks and planes that Saddam sent there when we moved into Iraq ...I am pretty darned sure it was not baby food .

Jim, you may be onto something here. All the libs are crying this war was all about oil.

Why not make it so? Seize thier oilfields, and start sending crude to the US free of charge! I wonder how many will whine when gas is 50 cents a gallon!

50 cents a gallon maybe pushing it. Even in Kuwait City gas is .78 cents a gallon.

Oh! I get it, you folks don't care who you rob. This is a sociological prediction: More deadly and brazing robberies will occur in your communities, because of high consumer prices and declining employment. However, don’t get mad at these people they’re just taking what they need. How on earth can we be so disgusted with criminals when the United States is acting like criminals? In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if many of Bush’s cohorts are not brought up on war crimes. Invading a country on false pretense and taking their oil is wrong, and there will never be peace in Persia.

RNCO8 check your geography… Iraq is not between Iran and Afghanistan.

..I stand corrected Iraq is to the east of Iran (dyslexia I will slow down and pay more attention to details) but it is still a strategic strike / deployment point for Syria/Russia/Afghanistan and Turkey (we will have to deal with our “friends” the Turks some day)
Hey Frank .50 is less than the current Tax on a gallon of gas so you need to say $1.16 a gallon (that would be .50 a gallon + tax) and yes the crash is coming , Iraq has the second largest reserve of oil in the world and the current slow down was a “cash grab” in advance of the market drop that will come as Iraq ramps up production ...to bad everyone will be completely “happy “ with imported oil when gas hits $3 a gallon and will forget all about making us independent !

Iraq is to the west of Iran....

Fact is that it's not our oil so how could we profit. Lets just say by chance that we would do something so despicable, how would we profit? Are we going to go over and drill it and sell it? No, the oil companies who pledged money to political campaigns would go over and drill it. We wouldn't see a cent and oil prices would never drop, we would probably have to pay more as they would just find some other way to justify hiking the prices.

This is a poor argument because you are under the assumption that if oil companies win you win. That's a faulty assumption and one that led us into the current situation we are in.

Not to mention the moral bankruptcy behind the premise that it's our oil to drill. I guess even republicans cant say we didn't have an ulterior motive for invading Iraq?

RNC08 read my blog view my photos
Jun 24, 2008 | 5:00 PM

Hey now I was not even thinking of taking oil from Iraq , we “win” because an additional 4 million barrels of oil a day on the market will drop the price like a rock...as far as your idea that we do not win if the Oil companies win ...what planet are you from ? We lose every time they lose and our government has its hooks into Oil so far we can't run the country without its tax dollars...honestly where you born after 1990 or what ? We have played this game before , every bit of it ! Including democrats telling use that new drilling would not work and that we where “out” of oil..

DaytonaFrank read my blog view my photos
Jun 24, 2008 | 8:36 PM

Under my plan, the Iraqis would extract the oil, and we would ship it to America for free.

Not all of it, just like one barrel for you, one barrel for us. One barrel for you, two barrels for us. Get the picture?
The pathetic libs have been crying all along that is the reason we went there in the first place. Everyone of them believes it anyway, so why not capitalize on thier crazy beliefs? They will never believe it is not true, so lets make it true! Then they can whine for real!

I forgot about the tax though RNC, so the price would be well over a buck a gallon even if the oil was free.

DaytonaFrank read my blog view my photos

And also RNC, attacks on the Iraqi pipelines and oilfields have dropped dramatically, and thier present day output is as much or more than it was before the war started.

God bless the American Military!

$50 a barrel triples Iraqs current GNP. Nobody would be "stealing" anything. Sorry but a "free Iraq" is not worth all the dead and broken Americans, we need something else to try & offset our losses.

True colors are coming out of the wood work like roaches in the dark. Oil prices are not going down because of increased oil flow all that much. It’s not going down because speculation is the primary cause of the price per barrel. The loop holes allowed by the oil men running the White House are designed to suck our economy dry. If the Iraq war was a contrive get rich quick plan, It has worked to perfection. Oil men have gotten richer and they’ll continue to do so. For all those who believe in the trickle down affect, God bless them.

I’m sorry Daytonafrank, I didn’t respond to what will bring peace to Persia. The answer is nothing in our life time. However, I can tell you what will escalate violence, and that is continued US presence in Iraq and the Middle East. This is a continuation of the Holy War. It has been going on for thousands of years so what genius believed the US could change that or as Fred Sanford would say, “What dummy.” I’ll answer that…George W. Bush.

TavaresJerk, this war was never about oil, as much as you and your cronies may spew.

It is all about strategic position of the US Military, and avoiding future attacks on US soil!

If you cannot see that, just go bury your head in that bikini, and wait for the end!

I saw the 10 million prediction but I also saw a senator state today that “America has only 2% of the worlds oil and 25% of the worlds population” ....wrong on both counts . I was being realistic and stating a goal that Iraq can reach in the next few months.
Khazzi who ever said I wanted to brink peace to the ME ? I could care less about what they do to each other, I just do not see the logic in continually turning our back on such dangerous children!
I see no reason for us not take repayment for our effort to free Iraq....I have no problem with it. But I do have a problem with Obama lying today on TV he has read the articles of war on Iraq (or at least he was supposed to read them!) and no where in our declaration of war did it ever say WMD's ....

...I know SSDD ...its all George W , he stole vital tax-welfare money and just wasted it killing people who hate us . Hey D-heads do you question the motives of Saddam Hussein IN HIS OWN WORDS ? I particularly love that line by Reed-Pelosi “We can't really do anything with only a majority in congress and the senate we must has the white house to”
O yea on the subject of Iraq : how much of our most recent war spending bill was actually for the war (and by that I mean Afghanistan and Iraq) ? A: 30.002% but that is an improvement over the last one that had only 26% available for the war IN an emergency spending bill. Where did the other 128 billion dollars go ? Special ear marks and not one of them was from a Republican...thanks Nancy !

DaytonaDick,

It does not matter what the war was about. Be it oil, Bushes daddy issues, terror, strategic position, evil Saddam, ect... My point is we are there, we are going to be there for a long time no matter what Barrack Hussein Obama says and we may as well make it worth our while.

DaytonaFrank read my blog view my photos

With any luck TavaresJoke, we will be there forever. A permanent military base in the heart of the middle east is the most brilliant strategy ever by a commander in chief, and Bush can take full credit for that. Or blame, depending on your mentality.

Only Obama can screw that up, but he has no prayer of getting elected to start with!

Yes, we NEED to make it worth our while, and that was MY point exactly! We are hurting for oil. They have plenty. Could I possibly put it more simply?

Yes that is the wonderful Mrs. TavaresJim featured on my avatar. I am truly blessed with a wonderful life. Lived in Tavares since 1975. It was a great place to grow up...now there are just too many people!!! 44yrs old, married for 23 years. 21yr old son & 14 yr old daughter. Business owner trying to live the American Dream. Kinda tough though with the idiots we have running things. My current favorite bumper sticker saying: "George Bush & Congress, bringing the 3rd world to your neighborhood". I follow no party lines when it comes to issues and I don't trust those that do. I like to make up my own mind about things.
