there are some lawmakers in Washington looking at the possibilty of returing to 1974 when the federal government limited speed limits to 55 m.p.h. to save on gas and oil.

is this a good idea today? would anyone be willing to return to the 55 max? or would anyone drive the speed limit if it went back?

I will drive 55 again when all the politcos and Fat Cats give up their private jets. Ain't gonna happen!!! I have already down sized from a monsterous Lexus NX470 to a Honda that gets twice the MPG. I bet this does have all the ticket-happy law enforcement agencies licking their chops though.

Why don't they try and synchronizing traffic lights for starters. I read in a news magaizine that this country waste about 10% of it's gas sitting at traffic lights because they are not in sync. Speed limit now is 70 mph in most of the country and people do 80 plus. Drop it to 55mph they will do 65 to 70 mph.

What a joke! The speed limit is 70 on I75 and if you are going the speed limit, you will get run over or be a road-rage victim. What makes the "clueless" in Washington think that 55 will be any better? This is just another excuse to act like they care and are doing something, when it is simple DRILL, DRILL DRILL at home! DUH!!

The real solution is: GET THE GOVERNMENT OUT OF THE WAY...more refineries, local production, etc. If a state doesn't want drilling off their coast, they can pay extra for oil recovered in other states.

Well you know what? Get cops to pull over anyone that runs you over for passing you while you're doing 70mph and get them to obey the speed limit. Slow down folks. Save gas. Besides it's the law.

I still can't believe that idiot that said his truck gets better mileage at 81 than 55. Utter nonsense. You have so much more wind resistance at 81, plus at 81 your enging is revving a lot higher in overdrive than at 55.

Want to save oil?, Then quit producing PLASTIC BAGS for grocery and retail stores, go back to using PAPER/CARDBOARD BAGS and GLASS BOTTLES, so many other materials we use everyday is made from oil that we don't even consider! So if we want oil to prices to drop, we need to quit using so much of it for everything under the sun, then we'd have more for fuel usage.
