I've been seeing more and more little scooters on the road now( I asume because of gas prices)

I don't feel that safe driving by them, let alone on one...I think I could drive safe, I just don't trust the rest of the driving population out there not to run in to me.

but if I didn't have to get on the interstate to get to work, I think I'd have to consider a little Vespa, Scooter, even an old Moped to commute on. I bet those things get pretty good mileage.

anyone drive one of these things?

I ride a motorcycle to and from work every week, it gets 42mpg city. scooters get even better mileage, but the tradeoff is that they are smaller and harder to see by distracted drivers I.E. cell users & lunch stuffers. as for the interstate, that's about as useful as lynx.. namely lame.there are plenty of side roads that will get one to work without the headaches obtained by driving I-4, and sometimes it's faster too.

I have never driven a motorcycle or a moped, but with the outrageous gas prices, the idea is crawling in my head.

My main concern would be safety. I think it will take a lot for me to make a decision to make the purchase.

You just have to drive DEFENSIVELY NeZe. There is still an element of danger, but you have to continually expect the unexpected, and assume the idiot in the car isn't paying attention.

I am 6'5" and 260 lbs....got that mental picture...I could ride a tricycle and look just as silly, I do Like Motorcycles though. The major Problem is they are making them smaller each year, even Harley is doing away with the wide-glide, the only bike I can ride without my knees above the tank (without modification)

I know of 4 people who have died in the past year riding motorcycles. I think the survival rate is probably higher on scooters than motorcycles since the MPH is typically kept low. I have driven both in the past I felt safer on my scooter just because I was driving on slower roads with it. I honestly think that with more slower vehicles taking to the road we are going to have to drop the speed limit to 40mph on some of metropolitan roads or make the slow moving lane for vehicles moving at 40mph or less. I think if we did that vehicular fatality's would drop across the board.

What I want is a Segway! Vroom Vroom! Those things are pretty cool! I've seen a ton of people on them the past few months! Be great if you lived close to work (like 3 to 4 miles.)

There are larger scooters out there now that are actually fast enough to be legal on the freeway. They could almost pass off as motorcycles. I've been considering getting one of those myself in the future. They'd be perfect for me.

I drive a Vespa 200 to work downtown from Winter Park almost daily. Generally stay off the high speed roads (408, I4). Haven't really had that many problems. Like one poster said, you must drive defensively. You can't daydream about the 101 things to be done. You have to pay attention to the road.
