Three Arrested, 1 Sought in Terror Plot on New York City's JFK Airport

Saturday, June 02, 2007

NEW YORK —  Four Muslim men were foiled from carrying out a plot to destroy John F. Kennedy International Airport, kill thousands of people and trigger an economic catastrophe by blowing up a jet fuel artery that runs through populous residential neighborhoods, authorities said Saturday.

Three men were arrested and one was being sought in Trinidad on Saturday. In an indictment charging the four men, one of them is quoted as saying the plot would "cause greater destruction than in the Sept. 11 attacks."

Authorities said the four were motivated by a pattern of hatred toward the U.S., Israel and the West.

One of the suspects, Russell Defreitas, a U.S. citizen native to Guyana and retired JFK employee, said the airport was a symbol that would put "the whole country in mourning."

"Anytime you hit Kennedy, it is the most hurtful thing to the United States," he said on a recording made by a police informant. "They love John F. Kennedy like he's the man ... It's like you can kill the man twice."

The plot, which the men code-named "Chicken Farm," never got past the planning stages, authorities said.

  • "The devastation that would be caused had this plot succeeded is just unthinkable," U.S. Attorney Roslynn R. Mauskopf said at a news conference, calling it "one of the most chilling plots imaginable."

The men tried to reach out to a Trinidadian radical Muslim group, Jamaat al Muslimeen, which launched an unsuccessful rebellion in 1990 that left 24 dead.

Defreitas, a 63-year-old Brooklyn resident, first hatched his plan more than a decade ago when he worked as a cargo handler for a service company, according to the indictment. He was recorded saying he "wanted to do something to get those bastards."

He was arraigned Saturday afternoon in federal court and was to be held pending a bail hearing scheduled for Wednesday, prosecutors said. He did not enter a plea at the arraignment, and a phone number for his lawyer could not be located.

Two other men, Abdul Kadir of Guyana and Kareem Ibrahim of Trinidad, were in custody in Trinidad. A fourth man, Abdel Nur of Guyana, was still being sought in Trinidad.

The suspects believed explosives could ignite the pipeline at JFK and destroy the airport and parts of Queens, where the line runs underground, according to the indictment. In

The pipeline, owned by Buckeye Pipeline Co., takes fuel from a facility in Linden, N.J., to the airport. Other lines service LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.

Kadir, a former member of Parliament in Guyana, was arrested in Trinidad for attempting to secure money for "terrorist operations," according to a Guyanese police commander who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Kadir left his position in Parliament last year. Muslims make up about 9 percent of the former Dutch and British colony's 770,000 population, mostly from the Sunni sect.

Isha Kadir, the Guyanese suspect's wife, said her husband flew from Guyana to Trinidad on Thursday. She said he was arrested Friday as he was boarding a flight from Trinidad to Venezuela, where he planned to pick up a travel visa to attend an Islamic religious conference in Iran.

"We have no interest in blowing up anything in the U.S.," she said Saturday from the couple's home in Guyana. "We have relatives in the U.S."

Investigators received information about the plot in January 2006, according to the indictment.

Buckeye spokesman Roy Haase said the company, which moves petroleum through pipelines in a number of states, had been informed of the threat from the beginning, but he declined to detail the company's security measures.

"Given the nature of Buckeye business and the importance of this transportation network, we have an intense and ongoing communications relationship with the Port Authority, the New York City fire and police departments, the federal Department of Homeland Security and the FBI," he said.

JFK and the area's other airports remained at a heightened state of alert Saturday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

Jeanie Mamo, a spokeswoman for the White House, said President Bush had been briefed and updated regularly as the investigation into the plot progressed.

The arrests mark the latest in a series of alleged homegrown terrorism plots targeting high-profile American landmarks.

A year ago, seven men were arrested in what officials called the early stages of a plot to blow up the Sears Tower in Chicago and destroy FBI offices and other buildings.

A month later, authorities broke up a plot to bomb underwater New York City train tunnels to flood lower Manhattan.

And six people were arrested a month ago in an alleged plot to unleash a bloody rampage on Fort Dix in New Jersey.

Amen! Just like the Nazi's caught off shore of Jacksonville during WWII. They were tried and summarily executed!

What scares me is that we knew about this threat in Jan. 2006. That's a year and a half ago. The second thing I want to say is It's hard to blow up a pipe line. You can blow up one end of a pipe line , but the whole pipe that is under ground does not blow up because there is no oxygen in the pipe. This is another example of people embellishing a story to get attention!

In the days leading up to WWII,America was a pacificast nation. The public lead to believe that our opponents either couldn't reach us or were mentally inferior.Seven days PRIOR to Pearl Harbour, the Dutch through wire-tapping warned of an attack. The date and time where forwarded through proper channels, and yet it still happened. It wasn't a supprise to the highest office, just to the public and the Navy.Although in the case of the Navy no carrier, fast battleship,or heavy cruiser was present. But without a sucessfull Japanese sneak attack, the US wouldn't have entered the war,and Roosevelt knew that. Think this and 9-11 might have anything in common? That I can't say,but what I can is that I don't believe in coincidence! Some 60 yrs. apart, though very similar in effect.

I agree, four orders of high speed lead injections would save lots of tax dollars spent on keeping them alive in prison.

I prefer to use the term Loud lead poisoning. But to quibble over a few words when the desired outcome is the same would be pointless.Pleasure to meet you Chainsaw!

And some people, even Presidential candidates, STILL don't believe we are at war.....

Had the plot been successful, of course it would have been W's fault. Don't see anyone giving him credit for the many plots foiled.

Hey Spectre...had a commander once that was a former co-pilot at your old unit... Small world....

What's really scarey is that the Left in this country are doing everything in their power to undermine the efforts of the Bush Administration to stop these plots before they're carried out. ACLU lawyers line up every time they hear talk of wire taps and the like. Their favorite words are "profiling" and "civil rights violations." They're already trying to say that the Fort Dix bunch were just a bunch of bumbling idiots who didn't mean anybody any harm so we should let them go and they actually wanted the photo shop guy arrested for reveling their "private tape." We've been lucky so far. It's only a matter of time until we miss one. Remember, we have to succeed every time. They only have to succeed once.

First of all, there are not many Democrats saying we are not at war. That is apparent. What they are saying, or questioning if you will, is would there even be any plots to foil if we were not in the Middle East fighting a war with no real outcome plan. By the way if you know of one, let me know. In this case it seems that the plot was already there, so the answer would be yes.

Defreitas, a 63-year-old Brooklyn resident, first hatched his plan more than a decade ago when he worked as a cargo handler for a service company, according to the indictment. He was recorded saying he "wanted to do something to get those bastards."

Do you see those words? A decade ago. So it had nothing to do with the current war and was actually being planned during the Clinton Administration. Also, keep in mind that the article clearly states that the investigators took care of this. The law enforcement folks are not hired by or work for Bush's administration. The article clearly states that the President was kept informed of the investigation, and that is all. Stop giving the White House credit for something they did not do. Those law enforcement officers are the ones that deserve the credit. Truth be known the majority of them were probably doing the same job long before Bush became President. Why should we give Bush credit for this?

The last thing I want to mention is since the plot was being hatched 10 years ago before any of the current political strife was taking place and going by the suspects own words it sounds to me that it was more of a disgruntled employe

CONT:

The last thing I want to mention is since the plot was being hatched 10 years ago before any of the current political strife was taking place and going by the suspects own words it sounds to me that it was more of a disgruntled employee issue than anything to do with Iraq or 9/11. Does that change the crime? Of course not but you have to look at the thing realistically and stop making every issue something to compare political parties. As I have said in other conservative BLOGS – if the country was only run by one party we would no longer have a democracy that was tempered by checks and balances. You may not like the other party’s ideals but without them you would be living in a dictatorship that was governed by one set of beliefs. If that is what you want I can recommend several countries…

Onewhoknows: I assume that your comments were directed toward my comments. Read what I said again. I never mentioned Democrats. My comment about how the Left is trying to undermine the Bush Administration's efforts to stop plots like this is a true statement that was made as an aside and had nothing at all to do with this particular situation and I never said it did. And I never gave Bush credit for foiling this particular plot. Yet you accuse me of doing all three of those things. Why are you so eager to defend yourself when no one is attacking you? Remember, guilty people run when no one is chasing them.

Onewhoknows - Sorry, gotta throw a flag on you. Did you forget the fact that these guys were Muslims (or did you convenienctly omit this fact)? The Islamists have been at war with us since at least 1979, but one can certainly spotlight the number of attacks on American's under the Clinton Administration, with little-to-no response! WTC-1, Somalia, US Embassies, the Cole......Disgruntled empoyees -- what a hoot!

Actually I was just giving my opinions about the issue and what had been said...not really directed at any one person. The fact that the suspect is a Muslim is clear but that does not mean that he did not start his plot as a disgruntled employee - a terrorist has many reasons in his or hers sick head for what they do. My point was it was started before 9/11. Someone did say that Bush should get the credit and that is where those comments came from - FlaNative I think.
