A group called the Hawaiian Sovereignty Government group occupied the historic palace of the Hawaiian people blocking traffic onto the grounds. They claimed that the palace is part of the hereditary people of Hawaii and as such the seat of their government. Is their any validity to this? For years sovereignty groups in Hawaii have asked for a vote to regain sovereignty of Hawaii should they be given the chance? Should their be a vote for residents of the state of Hawaii on whether to absolve statehood and regain their own sovereignty?

If this was allowed what kind of doors do you think it would open? Do you think other states would try the same? Is this the same as Puerto Rico, where they are periodically given a vote for statehood vs. territorial status?

I was just wondering what others thought about the circumstances surrounding the event.

This would open up to many issues, Texas back to Mexico, Whole U.S. back to native Americans.
ALSO
Who IS native Hawaiin??
My wife is 100% Chinese, but she was born and raised in Hawaii (born in Territory of Hawaii '59), Her mom was born in hawaii and raised in China, and her dad was born in China and raised in Hawaii, Yet she will tell you she's not of Hawaiin descent, What is Hawaiin descent?, everyone came from somewhere else.
Let's go back further, If the Hawaiins came from Samoia, then where did the Somioans come from? (Asia????), Lets give Hawaii to Japan or China then.
As you can see, No-one wants to ppen that "Pandoras" box...

THIS is a PROTEST movement anyway..IF they HAD an election TOMORROW Hawaii would STILL be a STATE the very NEXT day and THESE people would STILL be protesting the day AFTER that..

Their land is SACRED to them. There is a school in Hawaii called Kamehameha High School. You have to be at least 1/4 Hawaiian to attend school there. it was established by Queen Lilliu Kalani, one of King Kamehameha V daughter's. I believe they should be able to hold onto something that rightfully belongs to THEM! I lived in Hawaii on an off as a child from the ages of 3-14, my Dad taught at the University of Hawaii. We lived there during the school year, and on my Grandpa's farm in Maryland, in the summer.

"I believe they should be able to hold onto something that rightfully belongs to THEM!"

I COULDN'T agree more Deb but do you REALLY think a separatist movement is the answer??

One may very well make the argument that the overrunning of these islands was wrong from the start and I might EVEN agree that THAT was and IS a shame but c'mon,,Does ANYBODY really think that Honolulu is going to be given up??

I seriously don't THINK so..

Perhaps their efforts would be better served in the Preservation of their Heritage rather then wasting their time in THIS endeavour...

In a word NO , first of all we paid a high price in blood for those islands (if not for us would they be asking Japan for sovereignty today ? Would they dare ?) and second more importantly they are a full fledged state and we can never let a “splinter faction” steal a piece of this nation away! Not saying anything against your statement Deb preserving native history is alright but not at the cost of dividing from the whole...the least/most we can do is see to that we never have another “Clinton/Brown” incident where the president of this country uses the marines to remove natives from tribal land that they own and then turn it over to a privet company for the development of a golf resort...or at least see to it that everyone knows how evil Bill Clinton really was !

Most people think that the STATE of Hawaii was attacked Dec 7, 1941.
Hawaii did not become a STATE until June 1951.

I am all for them honoring their Heritage, But NO, they should not be allowed to put this to a vote.
My father-in-law did attend/graduate from Kamehameha High School, but my wife still insests that she is NOT Hawaiin

Actually it was Friday, August 21, 1959, but I get your point.

This is different from Puerto Rico. As a soverign nation that is a protected territory, they are almost all rights and no responsibilities (that is not meant as a slam, just an observation). Since Hawaii has already CHOSEN statehood, they are a different status with responsibilites to the Republic.

Hawk, Oh no, that's not what I mean at all. What I mean is that, land and certain traditions that go with that land, that has been theirs exclusively, should remain that way. Such as the Island of Niihau, which an island that is privately owned by the Robinson Family. I don't think Hawaii should be separated from the USA, after all this time!

NOW I'm sure that everybody ELSE does too..

BTW..I DO agree with you..Their Heritage, Properties,Traditions and Customs SHOULD all be preserved...

Let the people of Hawaii vote, when the vote is all said and done they will still be a state, as for the country that has all of the benifits of a state, they should be stopped at once. puerto rico should not have a vote on any matter to do with this country, Period. Their free ride ticket needs to be revoked and let them fend for themself, and if there is a need for the government to throw money towards one of our U.S. territories, give the benifits to Guam, they appreciate the U.S. and all we do for their country.

...on that I say no vote for Hawaii and a boot in the rear for Port O Rico ...as far as Guam they are good but don't forget American Samoa they love this country like no one els , fact is the people of that island are more patriotic than all three of the people running for president this year !

Hey Deb when did the definition get changed ? I know that as of the mid 80's the trust that was set up by the “Queen” (I can't remember how to spell her name at the moment) was available to :all the children of Hawaii and did not have a “blood line” clause (if it did Obama would by washing cars on the big island right now!) LOL

OK I stretched that one a bit ...it was Obama's mother that received a free college education from the island....but its fun to wonder where he would have wound up if his mom had not been at the university where she meet Obama's dad and his step dad

I have been an actor, writer, and journalist, among other things. Currently I am getting ready to go back to school. I think that news, as clichè as it sounds, is one day away from being history. I enjoy reading, writing, running, biking and swimming. Ironically I hate the Triathlon. Yet I believe exercise is the key to a happy life! Politically I'm a Moderate Democrat and I listen to anyone's views, the only thing that really irks me is people who insult others for having different views. Which often makes me insult them in turn. I guess that makes me a Hypocrite... At least I won't be lonely.
