I don't know the details on why or what type of base you are talking about. Army? Air Force? Marines?

One think I DO know, there are LOTS AND LOTS of restrictions on military bases to address just the issues you mention. Things like restrictions on what types (if any) training they can do at night/weekends, how far away from communities they have to be, etc.

You will probably never be aware of the training going on or hear it, plus it will provide an economic boom to the area.

But more than that, our military needs places to train. If they selected that location, there is a reason.

I lived on or around military bases most of my life. You won't even know it's there for the most part.

You stated:

Is that scare tactics? What sources are you using for this doom and gloom? What aircraft will the base have assigned, if any? What will the flying restrictions be? Do you know of student pilots? Are there a greater accident rate with them than non-students? My experience has been a student always has a qualified instructor with them, so how is that more dangerous???
Just to name a few.....

The Navy had an active bombing range in the Ocala National Forest for years.
We would go camping and see the F-4's flying "tree top" level to do their runs.
Talk about noise but it wasnt as bad as made out by this post. We always looked forward to seeing them.
Besides, if you have been to the Fort McCoy area, they could stand a few job opportunities.

FLANative: It's going to be a Naval Training Facility. I've never lived near one but I am glad to hear of the restrictions that they have. It just seems like if you build something that big on 2,568 acres, how could it not affect the community?
As for scare tactics, Do you believe that there will be NO noise pollution, No Safety Issues with regards to Student Pilots, NO Air Pollution from Exhaust and Emissions, NO Explosives Stored on-site and that the Demand for Water and Road wear would remain unchanged? What world are you living in? According to you, noone will even know it is there.
Yeah you should be scared.

Cromagnonwoman: I don't know about you, but when I go camping, the last thing I want to see is aircraft doing military manuevers where I'm trying to enjoy nature, but to each their own. As for the Job Opportunities in Fort McCoy area, just how many "locals" are going to be employed at a Naval Training Facility?

Thanx for the comments folks!! :-)

I dont know why the Navy just doesnt use the old base out off of HWY 40 south of Juniper Springs.
Its more secluded and you wouldnt have the environmental impact.

Depending on the type aircraft used in the training, believe it or not, you may not!!! I doubt they will be flying F-18's etc in there!!! My bet is for a runway/base that size, they are talking the very initial stages of pilot training, very low tech/low noise a/c.

I think that the fact that this just popped up as a roadsign in front of a 12,000 acre Parcel has people scared of the unknown as well. Maybe our Government should communicate a little better with us. But then again, who are we?

Psh.
I live on 199th Road, so this is just a few miles from my house.
I don't have enough information to form a firm opinion, but thinking about it, I think it's a good idea.
It would create job opportunities for lots of people, and it would inevitably spring up new stores, and housing developments. That is what Fort McCoy needs! Now, it's just a rinky-dink little town.
And, our military ALWAYS needs somewhere to train.
Although, at a meeting I went to, the lady said it was not military, but only could actually confirm that it wasn't NAVY, and had no evidence about other branches.
All I know is that I will be going to each and every zoning meeting I can.
The first one is tonight! All should come to learn more about this project.

UPDATE: I know its late, but the Zoning Commission Chooses NO to the development. It now must go to the Marion County Commissioners where it can either be approved or denied. :-)
