Denver's City Council president is getting hammered with hate-filled messages in response to Tuesday's surprise performance of the "Black National Anthem" by a jazz singer during a city event.

Chanteuse Rene Marie had been invited by Mayor John Hickenlooper's office to sing the national anthem during his annual State of the City address.

Council President Michael Hancock, who is black, was the master of ceremonies. He introduced Marie, who sang what is known as the "Black National Anthem" instead.

Her performance evoked angry reactions among some of the estimated 700 people at the event.

Marie sang the first verse of James Weldon Johnson's Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing, also known as the "Black National Anthem," but adapted those lyrics to the tune of the The Star-Spangled Banner.

In a statement late Tuesday, Hickenlooper said: "I'm disappointed that this matter has been a distraction from the great work and significant accomplishments of our city employees over the past year and the many important initiatives on tap for the coming year."

Hickenlooper said in an interview that he spoke to Marie after the ceremony and that she apologized profusely for any problems she may have caused him.

The mayor also said that Marie told him she meant no disrespect.

"She blended the two songs together," Hickenlooper said. "She was trying to make an artistic expression of her love for the country. She did not intend to make a political statement or anything."



Marie said she had no regrets. She deliberately didn't tell anybody about her song choice "because I don't think it is necessary for an artist to ask permission to express themselves artistically," she said.

"I would not change a thing," Marie said.



So what do you think guys was this NOT a political statement as the singer says, is it OK to pretend to be singing a long held song of national strength an unity but once you have the stage instead push a secular separatist agenda ? ...Are we even talking about a song here or are we talking about the open determination of some blacks to drive us all further apart !

This had nothing to do with being an individual artist. This was down right sneaky. She knew it was a slap in the face, and she played her cards the way she saw fit.

I need to look up those lyrics. She may have said something more offensive than Imus.

My black neighbor talks about blacks like she was part of the KKK LOL. The older generation of blacks that actually put up with alot of BS really have no sympathy for this poor me generation thats been raised.

wait until they change the "white/Black" House......but I am with you Adeltonian...it is amazing how Imus gets trashed for making a stupid remark THEN WE gotta deal with BLEEP like this...along with Wright whose dead wrong and Mr.not so Sharpton......and all others....just amazes me. I spoke to a friend, he is like Obama neither black or white but I guess HE THINKS he's black and I actually was so pissed he called me a racist...WHAT.....so I said if I am racist YOU ARE SO CONFUSED.....like Michael Jackson sings...don't know if I am white or black.....I AM TIRED OF ALL THIS BLACK THIS AND THAT.......tired.....sick and tired.

"Artistic Expression" my butt!! If she wants to write her own songs, she gets all the "artistic expression" she wants...when it comes to the National Anthem, is should be done the way it was intended!!

So who fell down on their job here? Why wasn't her mic cut as soon as it was realized what she was doing. Ok so its her "right"(missed that one in the Bill of Rights, must of been tuck in there under the, right to be an idiot section)to choose her song, but when your HIRED to perform one song and you perform another...its the EMPLOYERS RIGHT to shut your azz down so why wasn't her's?

and this crap about whites being the minority. how silly is that? whites ARE NOT the minority in this country. Whoever said that need to wake up and check statistics. Sounds like that person is scared to be a minority. Whats wrong with that? Hispanics and Blacks and Native Americans have to deal with it. IF it does come to the fact that Whites are minorites (which I dont think it will happen), then deal with it.
but on to another point, the singer should sing the national anthem the way it was written. no fusing other songs in it. BTW what in the heck is the Black National Anthem? WHo made that one up? I thought the Black anthem was "Say it Loud! I am Black and I am Proud!!" LOL

You go Afelton........frankly WE ARE ALL AFRICANS.......WE WERE ALL MUTATED TO THE NORTH AND AS THE COLD WEATHER BECAME EVIDENT IT LIGHTENED OUR SKIN........BUT WE ARE ALL AFRICANS....IN THE BIBLE IT SPEAKS OF ETHEOPIA AND SYRIA......NO AMERICA........so lets fly with that......which I think more and more each day is true.........I like it.....imagine if you lived in the South..we would all be black by nature..so the idea that we all came from Africa is not far fetched and mutated to the North thus lightening the skin colors...LETS MAKE A AFRO-AMERICAN PLATE....with the NAACP on it....way to go...

..LOL sorry I can't stop laughing thinking that a white saying “we are the minority now” brings to mind the idea that being a minority is something to aspire to ! (goes for the minority's who spend all their time working at being different as well) ...
All I can say is that IF you need a different Anthem you also need a place of your own to sing it in...so Afelton are you Supporting “separatism” now ? ...who does Us and THEM lead to inclusion and equality. When do we all sing with one voice ? LOL

see how sad this gets. Times like this I can only which FOR THE REDEMPTION COMING OUR WAY IN 2012............because this will never stop the bickering, discrimination and assasination of everyone's opinion is JUST...so earthly like. Well, all I will say and agree to THAT WHAT'S THE USE OF COMING TO AMERICA, IF YOU ARE GOING TO CHANGE THE WAYS OF THE UNITED STATES...yes by all mean if you have a better way of doing something share it but when PEOPLE WANT TO JUST IMPOSE THEIR OWN NATIVE ISSUES...that's sad. JUST LIKE THE PUERTO RICANS THAT WANT TO SING THE NATIONAL ATHEM IN SPANISH............WHAT!!!! THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE........there is a fine line and this SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ALLOWED OR EVEN TO HAVE THE REMOTE IDEA......sorry...I am an American I happen to LOVE THE FLAG AND ITS ATHEM AND IT IS AN INSULT TO HAVE IT REDONE BECAUSE CERTAIN PEOPLE JUST GOTTA GO THERE....BLEEP!!!

NO RNC Come on I dont support Separatism. I am married to a White woman and I have biracial children. I am just tired of Whites (well SOME Whites) complaining about being the minority in this country. That isnt possible. And then people complain about BET. if you really want equality then lets get rid of the CMT also. and as far as my comment about "say it loud. I am black and I am proud." that was a song by James Brown and he wrote that song during the Civil RIghts movement when songs like that HAD to be heard. but in all honesty, i think that I am singing with one voice when i married my wife and had my children. Its kinda amazing how some whites will NOT accept my children as White even though Blacks will accept my kids as Black and vice versa. I just wish that people will accept THEM unlike my mother-in-law.

...sorry but I would probably not accept your children as “white” but then again I would not be looking to label them as white or black in first place , why are you ? ...I thought a few of you would pick up the thread and ask the defining question that this post puts in front of us...its the national anthem for crying out loud ! Do I have to spell it out ...Do YOU Afelton want to be a “black man” do you want you kids to be “black” or “white” , Candy are you hoping to set your children apart from others based on their skin color ? Or do you want to put aside racism all together and let them be people and Americans ?
I so do not watch CMT but my kid did watch the CMT awards and I did see a number of black county artists was I given the wrong impression ? I never see white faces on the BET .

lol...you know I remember it was mid 90's when my oldest daughter came home utterly upset when they started passing these letters regarding ebonics.....NOW THAT WAS CRAZY AND I AM HAPPY TO SEE THAT NEVER TOOK PLACE. Aint it a shame the kids are subjected to this garbage cross marriage is okay but the kids suffer the most no matter how the parents feel.
The motherinlaw is probably not sure what to call the grandkids.
The 50's had lots os black entertainers we ALL enjoyed without the sick rap lyrics of todays
crowd of slopy dresesd (Did i say dressed/) baggy pants and backward caps plus the graffiti scribbled on many places by those gangs of mindless jersk!!!
We need to invoke the draft to get them out in the real world to earn a living instead of their lounging and hanging out in groups looking for ways to get high or whatever just so they get recognition by their buddies being cool!!
Whites are treated like a minority when we fill out job apps they ask for ethinticty so they can determine if they want to hire a non spanish speaking person or a common white person the old saying that a squeaky wheel gets the most grease and the blacks are really getting lubed!!!
The group caliing themselves african americans have nothing in common with africa they are americans BLACK AMERICANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey RNC I see that you dont watch BET a lot because there ARE white faces on that channel. but thats beside the point. I want to considered what I am. a loving father and a loving husband. If you want to describe me as a black man then so be it because that is what I am. As far as my kids are concerned, i dont see them as black or white but i am just stating how some people see them. I was just answering some bloggers that commented about whites being the minority. and RNC i did answer the blog. I think that the singer should of sanged the national anthem the way it was intended. Also myfreespeech, hip hop USED to be a good form of art but its changed during the last 10 to 15 years. Today it SUCKS. I mostly listen to 80s and Motown and some old school rap. but RNC we can put the black/white issue behind us and be united as one. just like the biracial kids of today. they dont see color in their parents. they see just mommy and daddy.. sooner or later we as adults will be like those kids.

Good answer afelton too bad the hate goes on but hollywood has done us in with their idea of what is and isnt funny and family values aren't used much on the hollywood scene those spoiled brats are getting coverage for their misadventures having kids out of wedlock and glamorizing their life style sucks big time..
I do like the way they don't cover Bill Cosby and his views aboput the racial stuff media has thin skin I think one sided views all liberal!!!!!!!!!

BINGO ! You don't see white or black all you see is children !!! Now how do we expand that and not fall backwards again...I am sorry if you think I am calling you a “black man” in any way but it is not different from calling me a white man (or what I get called all summer because of my skin color LOL) it means nothing to me one way of the other. You can be a great guy or an ###hole with any color skin . I am just worried that if you start (sorry using you as an example only) singing a different national anthem and Candy starts singing another are we not getting farther and farther away from the day when your kids don't have to “fit” into a black or white or brown world ?
