This is a little know fact from before WW-II (full story at this link :http://www.agriculture.com/ag/story.jhtml?storyid=/te

Ethanol is far from a “new” idea and was first developed and distributed in our fuel to prevent “knocking” from pre-detonation . Blends of 5% to 17% where common in the 30's and NO lawsuits where every filed over problems arising from the use of ethanol in fuel , but the oil industry did file lawsuits to stop the use of ethanol and found that the substance tetraethyl (lead) was found to be cheaper and so replaced ethanol ! LOL to bad it was so poisonous that we had to remove it AND reduce the efficiency of our cars to burn low octane gas ...fact is we Missed a golden opportunity to step forward in our overall MPG when we turned our back on the very best high compression technology and developed the very wasteful cars we now run ! Fact is more harm than good has been done by our “half-bleep” environmental efforts......

Did you know there are two methods of producing ethanol from corn , the first (fast down and dirty) way is the “dry mill” method this one uses 1 bushel of corn to produce 2.5 gallons of E100 ethanol and produces 18 pounds of DDGS animal feed (suitable for cows only) . The second is called the “wet mill” process this one produces 2.5 gallons of E100 ethanol , 1.4 pounds of corn oil (human food grade) 3.3 pounds of fiber (you anti ethanol guys really need some of this !) and 11.6 pounds of DDGS animal feed suitable for all forms of live stock ....

Water and Methanol injection was also a tried and true means of running a higher compression engine with a lower octane gasoline. Florida's got a trial plant up and running using sugar cane. Experiments with sweet sorgum ( probably misspelled ) are being tried as well and it is touted as producing water as a by product. The other sources require additional amounts of water to be added in the process. Good post RNC.

Yes and with the addition of the “new method” of producing methanol from cellulose including grass , yard wast industrial byproduct trash etc Florida may have 41 new methanol plants in the next 2 years. Plus our state capital is building a nice new (old fashioned LOL) garbage incinerator to develop electricity and wouldn't you just know it the byproduct of this plant is ethanol ! LOL
Fact is that ethanol has been taking a beating for the past 6 years because our current “crash” was necessary to give the democrats something to blame on “Oil man Bush” and if Obama does not win you will continue to see tons of negative BS about bio fuel but unlike the billions that are wasted on “solar power” which will never be practical ethanol fuel will continue to grow even with out federal money because it is already a success.....

Florida's experiments are being done to show it is economically feasible to produce ethanol without using a food source crop, such as corn. I'd watched a good program on PBS, WMFE TV Channel 24, within the last 3 months on this issue, it was both informative and extremely positive.

The because "Bush ia an oil man " arguement for all the problems we have is both getting very old and without factual base in my belief !

Yea me to , Bush could possibly have made the price of oil go up here for a profit but it is not possible for him to be responsible for making the whole bloody world pay $135 a barrel for the stuff ! If that where true Democrats would not need to fight him he would be running from every nation on earth ! ...I am working on my own “recipe” and because you can't grow oil I am working with what we have (good thing I have a sugar cane farm less than a mile from here !) I believe that I can extract ethanol from oranges and yard grass...time will tell.

O yea and Obama says everything will be A-O-K if I just learn to use less energy ! That boy don't know squat about real Americans .....LOL

I've already stated that when Obama puts in his " two cents " it is overpriced at that. Orange peels have been mentioned for fermenting. The lawn grass and a compost pile, could supply some of the needed heat ?

They do a lot more than add heat they actually ferment ! The truly foolish thing about our current production facility's is that they act as if they are making drinking whiskey , they only use “clean corn” they wash and inspect all the raw material and handle everything on the input side with FDA regulated rules ! Crazy , fact is that you can make “mash” from anything that ferments and I do mean anything the new “super yeast” can even work on wood chips ....I don't plan to be drinking my fuel so the flavor is not an issue.....LOL

Yes I am ! But I have the luxury of being right. And in the long run the AE I support will become an integral part of all the world energy needs...yours will be powering beeny hats forever!
Hey Sun beam...how much of our energy needs did the 750 million in federal funds for solar last year replace ? Thats right less than ½ of 1% of electric users while moonshine replaced 1% of ALL fuel consumption at a cost of LESS than 200 million ...so you “replaced” 1/2% of 15% of the USA energy need while ethanol replaced 1% of 100% of our needs ! And in 08 your little tinker toy will get another 750 million and ethanol will get -0- in direct federal funds (as long as corn does not drop below $2.46 a bushel...considering it is $6.00 a bushel I have no fear of that happening!)

RNC08 has taken his information from "Agriculture Online" a web site that is full of "positive" information about ethanol.

They have an interesting little tidbit that I have included below to provide readers with a sense of why they say so many nice things about Ethanol.

"ETHANOL EXTRA
Choices for ethanol

Choices for ethanol, a special section produced by Successful Farming magazine, is a futuristic look at potential changes in ethanol, including new ways to sell it to consumers, seed selection that can boost ethanol yields from corn, the outlook for cellulosic ethanol, and market projections that show smaller but still profitable returns for the industry. It is brought to you by the sponsorship of the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC), Farm Credit Services of America, and Pioneer Hi-Bred International. Click on the link above to download a PDF of the special section."

See my blog "The Concerns of Senator Martinez" for additional information and sources.

BTW, I forgot to mention that the "tidbit" or "Ethanol Extra" was taken from Agriculture on-line, the source used by RNC08. I wanted to make sure that I gave credit to those who deserved it.

Ethanol works in only so few cars. In plain english, Ethanol burns faster than we really want it to. That's why the gas companies were kinda willing to have it. Since it burns faster, it gets used up faster and people have to buy more. Talk about conspiracies.

Ethanol replaced mtbe, which replaced lead. Bush actually signed the funding bill for 6 new US cellulose ethanol plants. Cellulose plants as said above can us almost any biological mass to form ethanol. The thing That burns my boat about ethanol is all the people that make it out to be a self sufficient source even though we import most of our ethanol from a country that destroys more rain forest than anything. Interesting bush signed the funding for these plants and shell oil is the worlds largest manufacturer for the catalyst in the production of cellulose ethanol.. I guess that doesn't sound good when we want to talk conspiracy theories though.

Nightmare: if ethanol really burns faster it would not be an octane enhancer. The lower the octane the easier the fuel burns. Higher octane fuels require more energy to ignite.. Wait that sounds silly right? The benefits are when we compress the air fuel mixture more, we can create more power. The less octane the less we can compress these fuels.

The thing I like to recommend to people with post 96 cars (or OBDII) is reset the computer and go through a driving cycle. OBDII remembers a bit and uses this info for the way it manages the engine.

Actually you are naming just one place in an attempt to “back spin” the issue without having to prove any of your false statements Shadows....my information comes from a lot more places than yours ! Including the library of congress .
Thanks DKS , that is probably the biggest ethanol “myth” of all RE: ethanol has less energy potential than gas fact is that one gallon of E100 has 20% more energy in it than a gallon of regular gas...The funnest thing is what Nightmare has said the idea that big oil is “willing to tolerate ethanol because it does not threaten them” fact is big oil has spent billions fighting ethanol as a fuel....Oil companies only “tolerate” solar power with good cheer and support it whenever possible !

Well and I think I was told about a project, and it does seem like you've been doing your homework =) ..

I like ethanol, I just don't like how it's being produced. We have so much potential and so much waste that can be converted. The Pacific NW region could eventually become a goldmine for ethanol production if someone uses a brain cell or two..

You got that right about mismanagement ! Fact is the ground work was laid in the 70's for producing ethanol from everything from grass to oranges (you add enzymes to the mash DU!) but in an effort to win votes all of the economic incentives for biofuels have gone only to high grade (food) stocks the imperative has been to make it more about farm aid than it is about fuel...not that this has failed totally , we now produce twice as much corn as we did in the 80's and our harvest efficiency is close to 100% now (up from 75% in 1988) , but it is high time that we start opening up our options and start using what we currently waste to meet our energy needs.
BioDiesel , Ethanol , Methanol , Nitro methane and CNG are all products that can be made here in America. All of them are in abundance. All of them are available for development right now ! (I almost added hydrogen to this list but it is still a few years away )
