Political Philosophies

Right (Conservative)

Conservatives tend to favor economic freedom, but frequently

support laws to restrict personal behavior that violates "traditional
values." They oppose excessive government control of business,

while endorsing government action to defend morality and the

traditional family structure. Conservatives usually support a strong

military, oppose bureaucracy and high taxes, favor a free-market

economy, and endorse strong law enforcement.

Left (Liberal)

Liberals usually embrace freedom of choice in personal

matters, but tend to support significant government control of the

economy. They generally support a government-funded "safety net"
to help the disadvantaged, and advocate strict regulation

of business. Liberals tend to favor environmental regulations,

defend civil liberties and free expression, support government action

to promote equality, and tolerate diverse lifestyles.

Libertarian

Libertarians support maximum liberty in both personal and

economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one
that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence.

Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose

government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate

diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties.

Statist (Big Government)
Statists want government to have a great deal of power over the

economy and individual behavior. They frequently doubt whether

economic liberty and individual freedom are practical options in

today's world. Statists tend to distrust the free market, support

high taxes and centralized planning of the economy, oppose

diverse lifestyles, and question the importance of civil liberties.

I don’t find these “definitions “ completely accurate..BIG Surprise huh???

While I find the conservative definition adequate as far as it goes,, I think that SOME of the Differences are misleading and MORE the result of Stereotyped impressions then in ANY basis in fact....
For instance..I believe that those qualities that you have listed for conservatives are DIRECTLY and ACTIVELY opposed to by Liberals while the qualities listed as Liberals are NOT exclusive TO Liberals..

I am a STAUNCH conservative yet I will defend civil liberties and FREE expression to the death..I JUST don’t ALWAYS agree with the LIBERALS’ expanded definitions of Civil Liberties and the ONLY Free speech that I abhore are those of the EXPANDED variety..Like the marching of Nazis through a Jewish Community of Holocaust survivers or the placing of a crucifix in a jar of urine..THESE are ACTIONS,, BORN of HATRED,, They are NOT speech..

I have YET to meet someone who is Conservative who is against personal Choice as enumerated in the Constitution..If ANYTHING,,WE Champion all efforts to sever the ties of the SLAVES of the Government and establish IN them a SENSE of Freedom of Choice..It is LIBERALS who remove choice with their programs..ONCE you get dependent on them ,, you have virtually NO choice but to REMAIN dependent on them.. WE believe in lending a hand to ANY who really NEED it,, we just don’t believe in creating a LIFESTYLE of NEED that can last from ONE Generation to the next....Of Course..IF you wish to restrict the subject of choice to ONLY cover abortion,, you MAY have a point..

As for equality..well now… WHAT can I say about THAT.. REMEMBER,, if NOT for the efforts of Conservative Republicans the Equal Rights Act of 1964 would NEVER have been passed..

LINCOLN STARTED the Modern Republican Party on the basis of eliminating SLAVERY and recognizing the inherent Freedoms and equality of Blacks...

Anyway..That’s MY two cents worth…LMAO..

I do agree that this is not a perfect description of “the four points of political outlook” but it is close enough to give useful insight and introduce the concept to people who have never seen it ...I don't think you should have to take the whole poli-sci coarse just to be able to use this information.
I post it only to help people break out of the idea that they must be a con or a lib and nothing more , for me the slit from statist to libertarian is actually more important ! And the link between statists and liberals is strong !

We tend to draw hard lines when it's really more of a gradual transition from ONE label to another..

I tend to think of Libertarians,, generally speaking,, in the same way that I think of Pregressives,, who are NO more and No Less Liberal for ALL their denials....SO many Lies have been spread about what it means to be a conservative that SOME people would rather NOT have to deal with all those negatives..So they CALL themselves something else and AVOID it altogether..I find MOST Libertarians to be conservative in the BEST traditions of Conservatism,, that is,,barring the anarchists..

In ANY event,,You're quite correct RN..Beleive it or NOT,, there's EVEN a little bit of Liberalism is the most "Full Blown" of Conservatives.. WE just keep a tight rein on it..LMAO..

Point well taken Hawk , I openly admit that I am a libertarian in most ways (no government intervention in the personal lives of individuals /except when your freedom infringes on mine) but the “link” is strong between Libertarian/Conservative , just as the link between Liberal/statist is undeniable.
The most ironic thing (and the reason I bring this conversation up periodically) that most people who support Libertarian ideas think that they are “Liberals” and support people/ principals that are contrary to their actual desire...the very word “liberal” is the poorest misunderstood of all descriptives. Liberals do not seek more liberty and in fact work for the opposite !

Yup , No government is Good government ! I need them to make sure that China does not steal my lunch money (wish they would start doing a better job of that) and so that I am not forced to pray 5 times a day by some guys with guns...and I suppose I have to pay them to try and keep someone from stealing my TV ...but everything they do beyond that and all the money they ask me for the pay for all the crazy stuff is just to much government !

Libertarian, and a bit to the right as well. Guess I'm a Libertarian with a streak of personal morals.

I did have a bit of difficulty with the first statement "Government should not censor speech, press, media or internet". In most cases, I'd agree, but there are some things, like military secrets and manuvers, that should NOT be made available to the general public. Remember Geraldo drawing a map in the sand of where he was while in Iraq? That kind of thing.

And point taken JD , I said NO on any form of censorship but agree that military intelligence at a time of war is something we can wait to see...but when we allow anything to be hidden from us we can never be sure what has been hidden....

"Conservatives usually support a strong

military, oppose bureaucracy..." is an interesting statement, because other than the Catholic Church, the military is probably the best example of how a bureaucratic organization is structured and functions.

"Liberals tend to favor environmental regulations, defend civil liberties and free expression,.." but yet they are against gun ownership and oppose religious expressions that may offend others.

Libertarians "support the free market," ...does that mean that they support government bail-outs when businesses make bad decisions and are in danger of failing?

RNC08 read my blog view my photos

Only a sick mind could compare the necessary structure of a military organization to a political entity ! You must be hoping that no one will realize that a military organization and it dominion are compartmentalized while a government is in its nature externalized. RE: the military does not pose a threat to the citizenry only the government and or the government that controls the military pose a threat...
As far as your description of Liberal you are totally WRONG both by the proper definition and by the actual actions of contemporary Liberals in this country! RE: Democrats/liberals have filed more direct attacks on personal freedom that in the past 2 years alone that Republican/conservatives have in the past 80 years....

Government should not censor speech, press, media or Internet. Agree (censorship = communism)

Military service should be voluntary. There should be no draft. Disagree (If there are no volunteers, then what?)

There should be no laws regarding sex for consenting adults. Disagree (snuff films?)

Repeal laws prohibiting adult possession and use of drugs (While I feel that most drugs should be de-criminalized, other drugs like GHB should be strictly monitored)

There should be no National ID card. (I am undecided on this one.)

End "corporate welfare." No government handouts to business. Agree (How about no government handouts to anyone?)

End government barriers to international free trade. disagree ( I am not convinced on this one, feel free to enlighten me)

Let people control their own retirement; privatize Social Security. Agree (Let me invest my retirement like a 401k or my 403B and keep the government's hands off of it!)

Replace government welfare with private charity. Agree (Too much money spent on government welfare, let the private charities give a hand up, not a hand out!)

Cut taxes and government spending by 50% or more. Agree (These greedy bastages take too much of my money! Give it back damn it! I am all for a smaller government that interferes less).

Considering that the military does NOT function independently but as a part of OUR Government,,I find it interresting that YOU list the Military as Second in size when in fact it's ONLY a part,, and a SMALL one at that,, of the largest example..The U.S.Government..

RNC08 and Hawkeye, permit me to help educate you both by suggesting that you read Max Weber's writings regarding the bureaucratic model. Your attempts to attack me with such words as "sick" are almost laughable since they are based on such ignorance.

Hawkeye, I said: "...how a bureaucratic organization is structured and functions" I DID NOT mention anything about "size" nor did I compare the church, government, or military. In fact, they are all three excellent examples of bureaucratic organizations as defined by Weber......any basic management course would lead you to that conclusion.....vertical vs, horizontal structures, functions, authority, staff-line relationships, etc.

RNC08, I didn't define a liberal. In fact I QUOTED YOU and then pointed out a couple of facts that seem to indicate that "liberals" don't really practice what they seem to represent according to your description/definition. GET IT? Again, I pointed out the hypocrisy of what liberals preach (compared to what they actually do).

LOL ..got you Nort thats what I get for speed reading.
Now I see what you where referring to Shadowes and much as it pains me I agree with you the definitions in the original post are far from perfect...It is a cut/paste from the cite that runs the quiz , Tho I disagree with some of the descriptions (mostly the portrayal of Lefty's as protecting personal liberty) I chose not to edit this post before posting it because I was trying to introduce the cite/test/concept to people who have never heard of the “four corners of political philosophy” ...as far as my “education” I did pay to take this class 22 years ago ...and I can find fault with the definitions used here both in technical points and real world actions but it still opens a line of thought that many voters have not considered......Mostly that very very few of us are actually Conservative or Liberal that is just our “assigned seating” as presented to the “masses” by an educated media that knows better!
