Nightmare's Blog

Last Post 5 days, 6 hours Ago

I've never really brought this up before, but this was brought to my attention just a few days ago. My boyfriend and I were out to lunch and I overheard this couple talking about how they wished their son would go out more, but he stays locked in his room all day. From what I heard, the kid is like in high school and rarely goes out much. Now they bought him every system he has, including both PS3 (which runs around four or five hundred dollars) and an X-Box 360 (close to four hundred dollars) this isn't even including the games which can be about thirty to fifty dollars each if you know where to shop. But you really can't just play one game and be happy.

My boyfriend and I leave and at the same time we actually say: "Why did they buy the games if they didn't want him to use them?" We're both gamers, which means, I spend on average, forty hours playing games a week, ten hours online (which isn't a lot if you go by week) around thirty at work, about sixteen hours at school, and the rest is either sleep, eating or just reading. He's worse than I am at about sixty hours a week because he's already graduated and he has every system except PS3 and X-Box 360 and he has a more flexible schedule.

So here is my question for hopefully awhile because I know a lot of you are tired of reading my comments if you read them at all.

Why on earth do people go out, buy a bunch of electronics for their kid and than start to complain when the games start to warp their minds?!

I'm not talking about the games that are good, bad or ugly. I'd be a hippocrite to be against video games. But even in the little books that come with the games, they recommend rest after about five hours. (Go ahead and check, it should in most older games) I also take time not to play and to go out more. This isn't about the subject matter in video games, I want to know why people go out to buy them.

Also did you notice I changed my avatar? It's Gloria from Devil May Cry 4. One of the best series ever!

Video games by their very nature are antisocial.
Not always, because my son and his wife set up their basement for gaming and entertaining and are both very social.
However, those with a tendency toward the antisocial are damaged further.
A niece married a wonderful young man, who in his early 20's was already financially independent from some program that he and friends put together.
Still, he worked.
When he came home, he would ignore his wife and two little beautiful daughters, isolate upstairs on the computer until 3 am.
His wife finally had to divorce him.
He begged her not to, but could not change.
I would have advised her to get all the electronics and throw them out the second story window.
Better than throwing Ken out.
Still this is being acknowledge as a new mental illness, or manifestation of a mental illness.
Too sad.

I'm with ya on this one Nightmare. We have very few electronic diversions in our home, and absolutely none in the kids' rooms. I send them outside in the fresh air and out of my hair. LOL

I thought you had changed your avatar. Looks good.

Thanks for agreeing with me crone, but my parents bought me my first system years ago and they did not expect me to play so much, but I'm not as bad as other people. I still get exercise and go out.

To me, it's just a matter of common sense, which seems to be a rare commodity these days - or deep in hiding. I'm glad to hear you still get out in the fresh air. There's nothing wrong with electronic activities, but most parents use them as a form of babysitter. They figure if their child is safely ensconced in their room, then all is well, but I strongly disagree with that school of thought.

Old enough to vote, but still not old enough to drink. I'm a student at a small college and I'm a lot nicer than my nickname implies. I average a 4.0 GPA and my likes include white chocolate, wrestling (especially the wrestlers Jeff Hardy and Shannon Moore), drawing, painting, rock music like Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch Engage, Korn and Marilyn Manson, (yes I listen to Marilyn Manson wanna make something of it?) and video games. My dislikes are mushrooms, pickles, celebrity garbage, people who never look on both sides of the issues, people who generalize, Republicans in general and ignorance. I have been living in Central Florida for almost eight years and have been using most of my spare time to find every link between the oil tycoons and the Republicans in Congress.(Everyone has a hobby, this is mine).
