I know some of you are animal lovers, so I am writing to ask for your help.

My older son has a Macaw as a pet.  He has had it since the bird was two months old.  The bird is now 4 years old.

Last night, as we were transferring it to the inside of the house, it flew away.

We spent about four hours looking for it in the surrounding area, but we were not successful in finding it.  The bird flew away from the Casselberry area.  We don't think it went too far, because it never flew away before and the wings were trimmed.  We will be calling Animal Control in the morning.

If anyone happens to see it or hear about it, please let me know.

Here's a picture of my son's pet.

As anyone can imagine, my son is very upset and extremely sad about this.

Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Well, it is a tragic loss, and I can only give my sympathy NeZe.

It is a distinctive bird however, so it will be found.

I will pray that the finder will be honest enough to look for its owner.

To Pattiep, Gammies61, Hawkeye, ZiggyFla, Rexsmom and DaytonaFrank: THANK YOU so much for your comments and prayers.

I am VERY HAPPY to tell you that we found my son's Macaw this morning!! After such an exhausting night and day, I can say that my heart is back in place. Thankfully, Thunder is back home, with one minor scratch on her beak, but otherwise safe and out of harm's way. (I keep on referring to "her" although we still do not know the gender.)

Thunder flew away on Thursday night at approximately 8 p.m. As we are close to the Winter Park Drive and Red Bug Road intersection, my biggest fear was that she had flown over S.R. 436. With so much traffic there, I feared the worst.

We actually looked for her until after midnight and were not able to find her. After my son's finally went to sleep, I took another ride around the neighborhood thinking that I would be able to hear her better since there was not so much traffic. Thunder is a very smart pet. She has learned to speak a few words and is very responsive. Unfortunately, I had no luck in finding her.

Friday morning, we went out to look for her right before sunrise. After approximately 45 minutes, we saw her!! She was perched on a branch on top of a 20-foot tree. We called her to come down, but she must have been so scared because she would not let go of the tree branch.

Not knowing how to get her down, I called the Police and the Fire Department to see if they could help. Unfortunately, they said they could not do anything. After 8 a.m., I called Animal Control Services who advised they were not able to help either.

So, as there was no other alternative I could think of, I decided to climb the tree to rescue her. Mind you, I have not climbed a tree in many, many years, but I guess a mother has to do what a mother has to do.

You would think that my story would end here. I climb up the tree, I get Thunder down and everyone is happy. Well, not quite so. As I could not reach her all the way to the top, we decided to use a long stick in the form of a "T" to reach her. As I placed the long stick near her, she flew away from the branch!!

My heart sunk. I kept my eyes on her trying to see where she would perch again, but I lost sight of her. Fortunately, my son was able to follow her with his sight. He told me she had flown toward a tree and apparently crashed with it. He saw her go down.

Our search started again. After approximately one hour of searching, we found her!! She had flown a block away and was perched on top of a fence. What a relief I felt once my son got her back!! It is so heartbreaking when you see your children suffer, but it is such a joyful moment when you see them smile again.

Thankfully, everything turned out well. My prayers and yours were answered. Thursday night, my two sons and I prayed so that Thunder be kept safe. Friday morning, we Thanked God for answering our prayers.

I'm so relieved it all ended happily. Mostly for my son, but also for Thunder. I don't know if she would have survived on her own.

On Saturday, the grooming lady came to our home to re-trim Thunder's flight feathers. She said they were not too long and that is why Thunder did not fly far. She also said that perhaps the wind helped Thunder take flight. It was very windy that night.

After I told her what happened, she said that one thing we could have done was to get a hose and get Thunder wet while she was on the tree. Once her wings were wet, she would not had been able to fly.

Who knew!!

I certainly hope this is not a sign of how this year is going to be for me and my family. If it is, I need to start preparing for it!! - LOL

No offense, but I think your grooming lady is a moron. Hosing the bird down after it had been suffering in the wild for as long as it had, would have been senselessly, and unnecessarily traumatic for it.
It could also have made it sick from exposure, maybe even killing it. They are after all, warm blooded creatures.

I am glad she was not with you on the hunt!

God helps those that help themselves.
He heard your prayers.

But your personal effort to recover Thunder is why they were answered.

Your faith shows in that you gave thanks for that.

I think you will have a great year.

Hey, DaytonaFrank,

As moronic as it sounds, getting Thunder wet may have worked! Well, maybe not in the early morning hours when we found her, but if we waited until the middle of the day when it got warmer, who knows!

Thunder is very used to getting "hosed". Since she is so big, she does not take bird baths in a specific "dish" because we do not have anything that is big enough for her. So, when we give her a bath, we use the hose. We originally used a bottle to 'mist' her, but after a while, we learned she enjoyed the water so much that we upgraded her to the hose. - LOL

I guess in desperate times, one is willing to try anything. So, had I known this tip then, maybe I would have tried it.

Desperate times - I now laugh when I think about it, but who in the world would have thought I'd be 'hanging' on top of a 20-foot tree!! - LOL

Although I still struggle with my communication with God, one thing I have experienced since I accepted Him in my life is: If you leave it in His hands, He will take care of it.

Regarding your comment about the new year, "From your typed words to God's ears."

Thanks for your comments.
