Yesterday, I got a light break.

Traveling on Ronald Reagan Boulevard, I got stopped by Police.  I quickly went through a mental checklist ... seatbelt, check ... driving under the speed limit, check ... driver's license, check ... insurance card, check ...

It seems what I forgot to check is my brake light!

Officer B was nice enough to let me go with a warning and an order to fix the light.

Does everyone check the brake lights on their vehicles?  If so, how often do you do it?

Thanks again for the break, Officer B!!  The brake light is fixed.

No, I never check mine. I have to either back up in the drive in order to see the reflection or have someone there to look for me. I guess it's a good thing to check them once in awhile. But you know they can go out while in transit. You never know..

Thanks, Slgps!!

I don't think the $2.35 in my purse would have made the cut!

I always check the brake lights on the Harley before pulling out of the garage.

Check the truck lights once or twice a week when I get home from work...it's dark, so easy to see I have lights in back working.

Every weekend when I clean my truck, I have my wife come out(since I'm washing her truck too)and stand in the back of both of our trucks and 1 at a time check the driving lights (the 1's that are on when the regular lights are on), my brake lights and my reverse lights. Never know when those bulbs are gonna blow!!

WHOA...Let's not go to Extreme's now!!! I got a better idea to check your lights (and it will probably last longer then the warranty on the car, unlike a spouse). Try backing your vehicle up to your garage door(with the door closed of course)at dusk. You can see the reflection of the rear lights in your mirrors. This way you can check your turn, reverse, driving and flashers.

WOW!!

Your idea definitely makes better sense now that I have had some sleep - LOL

Thanks for the advice, Timh111!!

Really. I don't know what I was thinking!! - LOL

On both my vehicles, a Camaro and an Astro van, I know the brake light is out when the turn signal don't work. It won't make that clicking noise, and the indicator light won't blink, but remain solid. I keep spares in the glove compartment. It only takes a couple of minutes to change.
The one time I got nailed for this, it happened on my way home from work. I figured I would fix it when I got home. Wouldn't you know, I got stopped before I got home! They gave me a postcard like thing, and said when you get it fixed, have any police officer sign it, then just mail it in. The fee for the signature stating it was fixed, was $5.00.

Faulty equipment will happen and some officer's know this so they give you ten days to fix it...I think that's courtious!

Yeah di, it is very courteous, and if you can't get a little bulb changed in 10 days, I guess you probably deserve a more substantial fine! LOL!

Hey, DaytonaFrank,

Keeping spares is not a bad idea at all. I actually learned how to replace the little lightbulb and yes, it was no biggie.

And Di, I agree. It was very courteous of Officer B to give me a break.

In New Jersey, back in the 80's, people had to take their vehicles to the DMV for inspection every year to make sure everything worked fine. They used to check the exhaustion, the brakes and even the signal lights among other things.

Hmmm ... I wonder if they ever did that here in Florida ...

NeZe, if you have not had it done yet, look in the owner's manual if you have it. It should contain simple instructions for changing the bulb.
If you are not mechanically inclined, have one or both of your sons read it, they could easily do it I am sure.
Keep us posted, yeah?
Whatever you do, do not let a mechanic do it for you!!!

Yes, they did have vehicle inspections here in FL, but discontinued it soon after I moved to Daytona in 1979. It was an albatross, and I wonder why any state still does this.

I was thinking revenue, but the only ones that make out, are mechanics that will fail your car, just to make more money, and sell you repairs you don't need. This is how it is in NY.
In FL, it was run by the state, and you had to take your car to get fixed, or you had the FREEDOM to fix it yourself, they did not care, as long as your car passed the state inspection. One of the MANY reasons I loved living in FL! And still do! LOL!

Hi, DaytonaFrank,

Unfortunately, I am not mechanically inclined, but that little book you are talking about is FULL of information!! - LOL

Sometimes I feel there should be mandatory inspections on the vehicles, especially when I see cars spewing smoke all over the highway! Shame on them!!

One last thing. When privately owned garages, or other automotive businesses, are in charge of giving out state issued inspection stickers, I am quite sure there will be no corruption there. NY?

Yeah NeZe. The Manual. Unless you bought the vehicle new, you are lucky to have it.

I always buy a shop manual for any vehicle I have ever had. It is not because I do not trust mechanics....
Well no, that would be a lie. It is because I do not trust mechanics, and if I can't do it myself, I need to learn how to ride a bicycle again. I seem to have forgotten! LOL!

Manual in the glove compartment ... check!

Oh! I also learned that sometimes it is not the little bulb. It might be a fuse!!

Ah! And if it wasn't enough, I know where the fuse panel is!! -- ROFLOL!!

Yes, it seems sometimes the simplest answer is the right one. One thing my dad always drilled into my head, about auto mechanics as a kid.
A fuse blown however, would be obvious as neither brake light would work, and both blowing at the same time is extremely rare.

Im always checking mine when im hooking up my trailer even though I have LED lights on the Hummer which dont burn out that easy. I changed all my lights out and installed LED's. They last longer, burn brighter, and stay cool.

You lucky that the cop let you go, Volusia county doesnt give warnings. They are too much of pricks to understand that sometimes things happen and like a light going out can happen just a block before he came up behind you.

Before I left N.Y. 3 years ago, State inspections cost about $35. Here's the kicker, If you FAILED the inspection, you had to pay the $35 ANYWAY then get the failure fixed and pay ANOTHER $35 for a reinspection. If you lived in the 5 boroughs of N.Y., you had to have an Exhaust check and it had to meet certain guidelines. If you drove to upstate N.Y.(around the Albany area)the exhaust check was NOT required, only brakes, lights etc. That's why I left N.Y., The state is corrupt!

Let me guess timh. The inspections are still done by private garages and automotive repair shops on "behalf" of the state.
So they have motivation to fail you. And offer "repairs" to bring your vehicle up to state standards.

When I left NY it was 5 bucks for the inspection. Those poor suckers.
Back then, you had to know somebody to get that sticker without being raped. I hate to imagine what it is like now.

It seems that in New Jersey, they still perform inspections on vehicles. Drivers have a choice to go to the DMV or take their vehicles to a private place for inspection.

Here's the information I found on the NJ DVM website:

"The inspection process.

Make sure you have all necessary documentation (driver license, registration, proof of insurance) with you – you won't pass the inspection without them.

The inspector will determine your car's engine type and prep it for testing.

Your brakes' suspension, steering, wheel alignment and safety features (headlights, taillights, tires, horn, windshield wipers and turn signals) will be checked.

The inspector will perform the appropriate emissions test based on the year, make and model of the vehicle.

The final stage of the test will assure that your gas cap is stable and limits the escape of fumes into the environment.

Upon completion, the inspector will place a new two-year sticker in your windshield."

It would be interesting to see how many states still perform these inspections. I'll have to look that up.

I find it sad that this state doesn't do State inspections. I did do State inspections for years in NH and MA. The last class I took, was the Mass state inspection, with the new emission equipment. In that class, from the FEDs, they claimed that all the states will have this state inspection, and emission testing, or lose all highway funding. I think they set a date for 2010, but can't remember.

I think we need it. Too many junkers on the road, not safe to drive running around. Now I know the Red necks won't like Mass laws, you can't lift your trucks, and the tires must be no wider than the top of the fender of the car / truck.

waterrat, be careful what you wish for.
Junkers on the road does not equate to more accidents. More emmissions, maybe.
The fact of the matter is, that since FL has discontinued the inspection policy, there has been no significant rise in deaths caused by faulty equipment. Except truckers.
So you think everyone should have thier vehicle inspected for safety.
The first time your vehicle fails for a scam perpetrated by those in control of handing out the stickers, you will be happy, right? NOT!
