Conservative Radio Host Michael Savage made these comments on his radio show:

"You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is in 99% of the cases. It's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out."

Now some parents with autistic kids want him fired.

In a statement he says:

"My comments about autism were meant to holdly awaken parents and children to the medical community's attempt to label too many children and adults as autistic."

What do you think about what he said?

Should Michael Savage be fired?

What do you think about his statement?

Happy Blogging,

Mike

Savage is correct in his statement. Most of the kids I see with these "medical maladies" (ADD, ADHD, autism) are not sick at all. They have parents who refuse to parent. There are some kids who are truly stricken with the ailment, but it's few and far between. The only reason people are upset about his comment is because, truth hurts.

Oh no a guy said what he thought....how unpolitically correct. The truth hurts and only 10% of these kids have a real disease here. Parents be parents!

Obviously none of you know anyone with autism. While I can agree about some kids with ADD or ADHD being misdiagnosed, I do not agree about kids with autism.

Before you call someone with autism a brat go spend time with them, you may realize that they are not brats who are misbehaving, and that they are way smarter than you.

And yes that host should be fired. Insensitive BLEEP

I think that many people are incorrect that the medical community is mislabeling children with Attention Deficit Disorders and Autism. I think some would like to say it is just bad parenting but in most cases the cause is biochemical in nature. I personally have known parents who were fantastic parents who had kids who suffered from poor grades, attention problems and behavioral problems. After seeking help within the medical community these children, properly diagnosed and put on the correct medications improved dramatically. This isn't always the case but it's important to note that the there are a lot of people misinformed about the nature of these disorders. There is no amount of punishment or parenting that will cause a child with an attention disorder to miraculously be cured. Why because the problem lies in a chemical imbalance or neurological disorder which can only be treated by medicating the patient.

I am not saying that some kids are not misdiagnosed but in most cases it's pretty easy to distinguish those with behavioral problems and those with neurological conditions stemming from chemical imbalances.

That being said as a commentator Michael Savage should be held accountable for his statements. It sounds to me like his comments were ignorant and inappropriate. As such it's up to his employer to decide if it's worth keeping such a person on staff.

I don't know anyone with Autism, but it IS much different than ADD and ADHD. (Those I do believe to be a crock.)
I think he used really bad judgment in that statement. What if he had said, "Anyone with Muscular Dystrophy is just lazy and doesn't want to walk." ?
Pretty insensitive and ignorant.

I know 2 kids with "autism". One truly has it or something like it and the other the parents are too busy ignoring their responsibilities of being a parent that they let their kid run wild. He needs his azz whooped. He fits the brat criteria.

Okay what i think is that, y'all are all out of line, he spoke what was on his mind, and AMERICA is a free country there for HE HAS the freedom of speech. I do stand beside what he stated. in fact i know a few kids that are this way, and its IS because there parents don't take action when there kid is out of line and they let them get away with it. I agree fully with ::rexsmom:: that some kids really do have a problem but some are just kids who need a good ol' spaken. and like rexsmom said the OLNY reason that y'all people are making a deal out of this is because it's the truth and y'all just don't want to hear it.

I agree with what Dr. Savage said and he should definitely not be fired. He does believe that there are people out there commiting fraud and going along with a misdiagnosis of there child simply for the benifits that come along with it. He believes that the money should be allocated for the children who really need it, the children who are truely autistic.

I agree with you 80's.

Severe autism is a serious problem and if I were the parent of an autistic child I would want to hand Savage a savage beating (not that you could beat any sense into this little pea brain).

This jerk is just trying to stir the pot to drive up his ratings. Unless you choose to listen to this slug, nothing he says will bother you...you'll not hear it!

My niece has autism and it is totaly different than ADD and ADHD. The school system often try to label problem children with ADHD. I think before comments are made people should know thier facts. Autism is something that affects the whole family. It is very difficult knowing your child will grow up to be a man or woman and remain mentally a child. Mr. Salvage has crossed a very thin line again and should be fired before we have to listen to any more insults.

I used to listen to Michael Savage a few years back. Anyone who has ever listened to him for any length of time knows that this is the kind of thing he does. He's loud, crass, outspoken, opinionated, degrading and very "un-pc". He says aloud what more polite people keep to themselves. Obviously the "offended" parents don't listen to him often. Even I stopped listening after awhile, as even though I shared his opinions on most things, there's only so much ranting and yelling I can take. You should've heard his rants about Muslims. I bet some of you who are critisizing him now, would have agreed with what he said about them.

I also believe that we are too quick to mis-label kids as "autustic" and having ADD. It doesn't help the few kids who really DO have a physical problem controlling themselves.

You never know he might be right. Some doctors just want more money so they will say anything. A good spanking would work better osome kids.

The DAY that it became MORE important to NOT “inflict trauma” to a child’s “Self Esteem” then it was to teach them right from wrong was the day that DRUGS and the Labeling of “NORMAL” Human Behavior as ABNORMAL bacame absolutely necessary as a means to “control” kids rather then teaching them to control themselves,, and WHY....

While the afflictions of Autism and many other disorders may be real enough ONE must conclude that 100 million YEARS of evolutionary change MUST have occurred within the span of a SINGLE Generation for these afflictions to have reached the "Overwhelming Epidemic" proportions that WE see ( or rather,,are TOLD to see ) today..

It is NO coincidence that the meteoric rise,, to these EPIDEMIC proportions,, coincided with the Plummiting Fall in the practice of responsible Parantal Disapline..

When you sacrifice ALL on the alter of “Self Esteem” you are ultimately destined to become,, a very SICK Society indeed……

The PROBLEM is,, the one's getting the DRUGS are NOT the one's so afflicted...

Does it strike anyone as strange that we didn't have all this ADD/ADHD stuff 30 years ago???

Why??? Kids were DISCIPLINED!!!! They were not allowed to "act out"!!! If they did, the TEACHER (or Vice Principal) had a "board of education" to warm their butts, followed by another one when they got home!!!

Today, you see kids play video games for hours but can't do school work because they have ADD/ADHD. What garbage!!!!

As far as Autism, I don't know any children with this, so can't comment on it.

I also believe it starts with parenting...and discipline in the home.
And it is true that 30 plus years ago ADD/ADHD was not an occurance at all, at least I never heard of it as a kid, and it became a popular disorder in the early 90's.
All I know is..if i was gonna act out in society, and embarass my parents I WAS GONNA PAY DEARLY. Made me think twice.

Personally, I don't care for Savage. He's a conservative shock jock

However, I care a LOT about the First Amendment, and Savage has a right to his opinion. I am sick to death of this cabal of people who go out there and look for things to be offended over, said by people whom they don't like.

Honestly it doesn't matter if you know someone with autism, if you have it, if it's a horrible condition, or even if he's right or wrong in his comments. He's doing a talk show where they state their opinion. We are a country where people are free to lie in court to gain custody or lie to the media to win an election, but don't you dare speak your opinion about race or anything that may offend a spec of the population or you're outta here!

How about the woman in West Palm Beach who went to her little angels doctor and said: "He needs a label", (Autism, ADD, ADHD). They asked why?? Her response: "I can't get any State benefits because he doesn't have a label, so just give him one, doesn't matter which one".

ADD, ADHD was cured with a leather belt or switch when I was a kid. Worked pretty good I'd say.
I know a child who is Autistic, I feel for Becky and Jim, they are great parents who are doing a great job. Darren seems as "normal" as the other children. He does have his days.

I do know someone with Asphbergers (sp?), which is a form of Autism. That diagnosis is bull-hockey. He only acts that way around his mother. She is the only one who puts up with his misbehavior. When he is with our family, he is well aware that we don't tolerate it. If the diagnosis were real, then he would not be able to turn it off and on when he sees fit. So again I say most of these diagnosis are bull-crap. Some, though very few, are real. Savage was just pointing that out.

First if you don't like what you hear on the radio turn the station or turn it OFF . The government attempting to protect your “feelings” is doing a huge injustice to all of us and it must stop !
Second everything he said is true ! You will find that every one who states that this is always a real “medical problem” is being paid to say so Dr's teachers and parents who make this claim are all on the government dole and all of them are abusing children for profit (the conditions do exist but in less than 1 out of a hundred diagnosed cases , I can show you examples of true autism ADHD etc. but I can also give you hundreds of examples right here in Orange county of spoiled children who are being wasted* so that others can make money)

Is the "one out of a hundred" a scientific fact or something you made up?

I do agree about "turning off the radio". If nobody listed to this creep, he'd be pruning your hedge instead of getting rich by offending your sensibilities.

First hand observation ...come the the special children's Christmas party and count them for your self , or just come out to the gator farm for lunch on the weekend and I will show you two boys both have the same diagnosis both will grow up and die in prison but one is actually really handicapped and his brother just needs his but spanked ...I like them both but it is sad that the one will not have a chance to live a decent life just because he is “ADHD” so he can never learn and does not need boundaries ! ...total waste but at least the school is making a bundle on him and doing NOTHING as they do with ALL “special placement children”
