Comedian George Carlin died of heart failure yesterday at 71.

He had performed as recently as last weekend at the

Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas.

Here's what actor Ben Stiller said about him:

 "A hugely influential force

in stand-up comedy. He had an amazing mind, and his humor was

brave, and always challenging us to look at ourselves and question

our belief systems, while being incredibly entertaining.

He was one of the greats."

I've never seen his stand-up.  But I do remember him as a guest on "Larry King Live."

He seemed like a witty, yet cantakerous kind of guy.

Who do you think is carrying the "comedy torch"?

Happy Blogging,

Mike

His shoes are going to be tough to fill. A great comedic mind. One of the best in my lifetime

It was also announced that Carlin was being awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which was to be presented this Nov. 10 in Washington and broadcast on PBS.

There is no shoes that can ever fill his shoes! A Legendary King of Comedy that has left a great legacy! RIP my man!

There are no shoes that can ever fill the likes of George Carlin..He was truly a visionary... You may have liked him you may have not.. But he spoke the truth as he saw it... He knew the Republicans were a bunch of crooked morons just taking up space..And he always spoke about them in his skits. He will be truly missed... RIP George..

Mike, not only a comedian, but a brilliant social commentator Carlin was. I think you'd really enjoy his books. I actually just saw him perform live at the Bob Carr with my Dad a few months ago. One of his last performances. He had us laughing till our sides hurt.

There will NEVER be another George Carlin. Let's face it, George was no Lenny Bruce, but he got his motivation from political satirists like Bruce. The closest I see on the scene today is Lewis Black, but even as good as Lewis is, he's simply not the same calibre as George was. No one is .... no one ever will be. (Wonder if George recorded those cute little quips and sayings he once talked about for funerals? LOL!!!!!)

When it comes to comedy in todays world, no one can compare to Carlin. He was one of the best. The only comedian that comes close today is Lewis Black.

I've seen many of his performances and he will be missed. Like Lauren said, he was not only a comedian but a social commentator. He opened up comedy to what it is today. He will be greatly missed and I don't think anyone will be filling his shoes but hopefully someone will step up and keep his attitude and convictions alive!

Hi everybody, knowledge REALLY IS power. As the 5pm co-anchor/reporter here at FOX 35, I learn something new each day from the people in our community who share their stories, opinions, and experiences. That's why I love journalism, and what we do here at the station. With these blogs, I hope we can learn from each other, share information, and grow from the diverse viewpoints around Central Florida. So, as I'm doing in this picture: sit back, relax, and blog away! Thanks so much, Mike
