A GIANT CONFEDERATE FLAG COULD SOON BE FLYING HIGH ABOVE ONE OF THE BUSIEST HIGHWAYS IN TAMPA.

A GROUP TRYING TO BRING THE FLAG TO THE AREA SAYS IT HAS ALL THE REQUIRED PERMITS.

THEY SAY IT IS PART OF THE COUNTRY'S HISTORY.

BUT THERE ARE SOME WHO SAY FLYING THE CONFEDERATE FLAG IS A BAD IDEA.

THE POLE  IS ON  U-S 92 EAST ...

IN TAMPA. THE 50 BY 30 FOOT FLAG  WILL FLY AT

139 FEET.

YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO MISS IT FROM INTERSTATE 75.

WHAT DO YOU THINK: GOOD IDEA OR BAD IDEA?  WHY?

Happy Blogging,

Mike

If you dont like it, then dont look at it.
Stop pushing your beliefs on what everyone else should think and do in life.

Welcome to America, the land of the FREE.

yeah, I agree. Besides, people always want to tap dance around the mexican or puerto rico flags displayed everywhere...

On Plymouth Sorrento Rd, about 1/2 mi from 441 is a small store that used to be owned by americans, now it has the country of mexico painted on the front, with a mexican flag flying underneath a smaller United States flag....what a disgrace.

Forget about flying a BIGGER Confederate flag so that Trinity Church in Chicago. that will only add fuel to the fire. How about flying a MUCH BIGGER American Flag so that Trinity Church can SEE THAT from Tampa!!

Couldn't care less. If it is not violating any ordnances and on private property, it's none of my business. No one has the right to not be offended.

From what I understand there were several different Confederacy Flags and the main one that is used for display by many Southerners is considered the Confederacy Flag made for Battle. I would think that the Confederacy Flags do not have a racist meaning unless individuals give it that meaning. However, one would have to tend to wonder why no other Flags of History are being flown in addition to this one. And the final question I have, is why is this Flag of History chosen to be displayed like commercialism more so than any other Flag? Individuals who claim to want to honor it's heritage, do not treat this Flag with any type of respect it deserves. So to answer your question, I think it's a bad idea.

It doesn't matter what I think, it is private property and he can display anything he wants.
Robin, it is being placed on provate property that will be a memorial to the soldiers of the confederacy. It is a project of the Sons of the Confederate Soldiers. It is not being put there to offend anyone, it is their way of honoring the war dead. Given that, why is it such a bad idea?

I have given up lecturing the uninformed on the history of the various flags of the Confederacy. It would be better if the gentleman had chosen to fly a flag that had actually flown over Richmond or Montgomery, but it is his property and his right to fly it.

It's history & heritage but it was abused by hate! Sounds very familiar huh!!! Those who desecrated it for their own personal gain should be accountable for a part of the racist accusations! It would seem that our own American Flag is being treated the same!

I agree that the Confederate flag has a sense of history and heritage, however, we must remain conscious of why that battle ensued. There are still negative connotations associated with the flag and I think that it would be a bad idea to fly it.

I agree that one should be able to do whatever they want on their own property, but if this topic comes up for debate, I can see why some people would be upset, especially those who know what sacrifice for Freedom is all about.

Randyloo, perhaps before anyone should defend what they are doing, are they really honoring the war dead, if so why not other war flags of America as well? I haven't read any reports of why these people put up the Flag in the first place, just basically because they stated they wanted to honor history and that they stated they had the permits. And if these individuals wanted to honor history, then why put up a Battle Flag and not one of the first Confederate Flags showing what the war really meant? That's were the honor would be, flying one of the original Confederate Flags. So if one really wanted to honor the Confederate War, then I agree with mscsailor.

Arrrgh. I can't stand it. The flag in question is not "THE" Confederate flag. It was never the National Flag of the Confederacy. The First National, often called the "Stars and Bars", would more properly be called "The" flag of the Confederacy, since it actuallt flew over the capitol. Personally, I choose to use the Bonnie Blue (my avatar for many years in many places) as a symbol of my heritage.

Fly the Rebel flag Tall and Proud. It Rebels
against invading northerners, not the black population.
Being a Floridian for 38 years,
originally from Georgia, please don't
let the NAACP take 'another' personal freedom
from the proud southern people at large.

More American Confederate soldiers lost there life during the Civil War than all American wars combined 258,000....Anyone apposed to any memorial to these soldiers should go fix themselves a big cup of shut the hell up.

Florida Law Chapter 683, Legal Holidays

a few of many....

Birthday Robert E. Lee January 19
Conferate Memorial Day April 26
Birthday Jefferson Davis June 3

Evidently someone, somewhere, sometime thought it was necessary to honor the war dead and their heroes.
It is right there in the Florida Statute.

There is a Confederate National Flag and that too will be flown at the park, but the TV uses the Battleflag to sell the news. My Family did not own any slavesbut as a WHITE SOUTHRON MALE, I am supposed to be sorry for what someone did to a slave. Lincoln even said he would not free slaves if he could preserve the union by not doing so.
The flag is history and as a Southron man I am proud of the region I live in. The South is so nice all the yankees come down here and settle, then they want to control governement like it was up there. I dont care how they do it up north. This Flag is my flag, let the Sons of Confederate Vetreans fly it and join the group if you too have a Confederate Soldier in your family tree. Call 1-800-MY Dixie and Join. If ya want to see what this flag looks like go to I-75 in White Springs, Fl. We have one there too or maybe your like to look at one in Havana,Fl on US 27, or Plattville, Ala on I-65. One day you can look up and remember you too are a proud Southerner. BTW Southron is Olde English, which is how we wrote.

You are exactly right Bonnie Blue..

From Wikipidia;

What is now often called "The Confederate Flag" or "The Confederate Battle Flag" (actually a combination of the Battle Flag's colors with the Second Navy Jack's design), despite its never having historically represented the CSA as a nation, has become a widely recognized symbol of the South. It is also called the "rebel" or "Dixie" flag, and is often incorrectly referred to as the "Stars and Bars" (the actual "Stars and Bars" is the First National Flag, which used an entirely different design).

BattleFlags are SQUARE while the Naval Jack is of the more familiar rectangular shape..

..and didn't rebdoctor from the above post re-iterate which flags were going to be flown at this memorial and the news media makes it look like they are the KKK or something. Media!!!always informing the public.
BTW the FOX NEWS blogger in Tampa said this flag and flagpole was for adversetisement...how wrong was he in his report?

Well i can tell you all one thing. IF the KKK or any other hate group didnt use the Confederate flag to spread their own hateful agenda, Black Southerners will probably be more accepting of it. I am sure there are some PROUD BLACK Southerners too who would embrace their Southern roots. Not me since I am a Yankee. Native New Yorker.. :-) But I love the South just the same.

We love you, too Afelton, even though you're a Yankee. BTW, I have a brother who lives in White Plains. ;0) You make a valid point to, My
Brother!
The Confederate Flag is all about Hritage, it
has nothing to do with hate, nothing to do with
White against Black, it DOES however have everything to do with being Southern, like turnip greens, blackeyed peas, sweet potato pie
and sitting on the porch, sweatin' your fanny off in 99.9 degree heat, and lovin' it. It has to do with catfishin', cornbread, hog hunting to survive, Redbone Hounds, whippoorwills and the old stories my Grandpa told me about his Grandpa going to war in his bare feet, and coming home to a burned down farm. It's a Heritage I'm proud to be a part of, never ashamed of, and never, ever racist over.

Maybe if I painted my Jeep with the 'Confederate Flag' the minorities wouldn't steal it. Orlandoans: At the corner of Lancaster Rd on Winegard Rd is a Haitian church that flies a HAITIAN flag. What have they got to be proud of? They are one of the poorest nations in the world.

Okay, Hawk! Go cut your switch! You're right!
YOU, my DEAR friend, are LONG overdue!
Hey Sabaii, Now there's an inventive idea! It would make it easier for the cops to find, if they did! A Haitian Flag? What are they saying? "Hey, we're loaded with AIDS in here!"
