Another obscure find ? Thanks PBS !  I'm not going to say it's due to cheapness, but my powered TV antenna does just fine. Watched a neat program tonight on PBS, WMFE Channel 24 , titled: Artic Dinosaurs. Intresting enough stuff to me , but for the global warming freaks here's a little fact. Granted it took some time to transpire, but here it is : Presently the North Slope of Alaska is 1,500 miles from the North Pole and is subject to 6 WEEKS of near total darkness during the dead of winter. However, 70 million years ago, the North Slope of Alaska was ONLY 345 miles from the North Pole and subject to 4 MONTHS of near total darkness during the dead of winter.

I'm no scientist, but I believe that such changes might  tend to have an adverse effect on the ice cap.  Information like that doesn't sell carbon offsets though, does it ?

Hey, I do everything I can to conserve and I'm learning and getting better by the day. But hear me Albert Gore, you can ride in your jet.  I, the one with the  F-150 in the driveway ,with duals,  reserve the right to fly  the big BLUE OVAL !   Righteously so, I might add !        LOL !!!!

We have been watching TV off of our antenna for years and we have no problem with it. I am as cheap as it gets! I'm proud of that fact. We have http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2

mily We are already picking up HDTV feeds and will have no problem with the switch to digital.

LOL! I'm waiting for the tin foil hat club to tell us the new conversion boxes are really going to send out subliminal messages of communism and socialism, and invoke mind numb zionist death squads to take over the planet!

Well.... so long as they can do it in less than 10 years because Al Gore has announced the end of the world by then. I plan on maxing out my credit cards, and home equity by then!

LOL...great idea Abunai! I'm already in the workings of ditching the satellite to the regular old fashion antenna, finally got my coupons for the converter boxes! I'm sick of paying support to those who DON'T deserve it through cable or satellite! Maybe all those satellites spinning around in space will come crashing down taking out the main sources that has place harm to our country and American people!

Now if we can only convert those Hispanic channels back to AMERICAN channels...that job will be complete and on to the next one!!!

rexsmom: theres a great antenna website you can leave out most of the info and just put in the zip code. It'll show you all the HD channels, the strength and give recommendations to what you need to pick them up. I think it may be antennaweb.org :) .. RCA also makes a low power converter that be great for emergencies, plus there are some $100 12V auto HDTV antennas that are relatively low power.. In my case it's not that I dont have calbe, but I like to be prepared for outages )

Meb: Just so you know your talking about true north and magnetic north being the same thing.. Which it is most certainly not. The other little facts climate change has never been about earth's natural cycles, but how they have or haven't been changed by man. The real speculation has started because of the earths current orbit and suns end of cycle or low output. IMO we aren't even out of our infancy in learning about climate change, so it's a piss poor excuse either way. It's also becoming more of a reason on not becoming more green, a proper planned slow change to green technologies will eventually make us dependent. Change to fast it cost us change to slow well it's already costing us, kinda a catch 22 :) ...

I have an antenna too. I get all the broadcast channels crystal clear. It is a digital antenna too. But I have an anolog TV.
Come February, I will have to get a converter box, or buy a digital TV which I cannot afford right now. They are outrageously expensive.

My anolog set is only 3 years old. I will go with the converter box, and have seen them in Radio Shack for like 50 bucks.

I have heard the Government will send you a check for 50 bucks to cover this, for each TV you own.

Anyone know about this? Will these converter boxes actually work?

rexsmom, when one is single such as myself, openly admitting cheapness can impede the dating process and it is challenging enough. LOL dsk, I'm not against a cleaner enviroment at all, but the absolute BS sock and scare tactics are getting old. The current Practices as advocated by Queen Pelosi is like building a skyscraper and putting a sprinkler system in on only the floor you live on and ignorring the fact that a fire or smoke from those above or below will still effect you. The Chinese's pollution is a big conscern, but then a real bussiness wizard like Obama steps in and says : " We can sell them the tools and technology! " The words of a true idiot, the Chinese have no respect for bussiness law and patent copyrights, they pirate technology and produce cheap, shoddy and dangerous knock-offs while waging an economic war they intend to win !

I just think cable TV is crap. I would rather watch a DVD or download what I want on Itunes. Thats the way to go. I get all the channels I want and I get them from the stations I watch most.

Meb I agree with that we shouldn't have to be fear mongered into change, but we shouldn't use it as an excuse not to take care of the planet for future generations .. I think the story about the tortoise and the hare is a great lesson, slow and steady wins :)
